'What a joke': Calls for investigation after $828m 'disgrace' in women's Origin
The surface at Allianz Stadium in Sydney has once again come under fire after atrocious conditions for Game 2 of the women's State of Origin series. Olivia Kernick was the hero for NSW, scoring two tries as the Blues wrapped up the series victory with a 26-6 win over Queensland on Thursday night.
But the game was marred by more complaints regarding the Allianz surface, after $828 million was spent to rebuild it in 2022. Sydney was hit by a downpour before kick-off, and there was more steady rain throughout the match.
But you wouldn't expect to see puddles and water all over the surface at a brand-new stadium that cost $828 million to renovate. Holding onto the ball proved very tricky on Thursday night, and water splashed up every time the players went to ground.
It marked the third time since Allianz was re-opened that the venue had been turned into a swimming pool during a match, and serious questions are being asked about whether the drainage at the stadium is adequate. The first time it occurred was last year during a game between the Eels and Roosters, and officials at the time insisted it wouldn't be an ongoing issue.
But we saw it again in Round 1 of this year when the Roosters took on the Broncos. Warren Smith said in commentary at the time: 'This surface, there will be an investigation again into this playing surface, after the dramas of last year.
'The flood, after a bit of a downpour during the early part of the game, the field was under water between the Roosters and the Eels in August last year. It hasn't been raining to that extent in Sydney to explain this surface."
Calls are growing for an investigation once again, with fans and commentators blasting the situation on social media. The surface was labelled "horrendous" and a "disgrace" by angry footy watchers on Thursday night.
'Obviously it's not the best conditions out here," said NSW forward Kezie Aps at half-time. 'So it's just the team who completes the holds the ball and completes each set that I think is going to win the game today.' While Channel 9's Emma Lawrence said at full-time: "They've done it in horrendous conditions, they're covered in mud.'

Meanwhile, Kernick is the toast of NSW after the Blues forward powered her state to women's State of Origin glory. Controversially overlooked for selection in the Australian team at the end of last year, Kernick showed how wrong that decision was with a starring performance on Thursday night.
The lock forward scored two tries and set up another as the Blues inflicted more misery on the Maroons. The reigning NRLW Dally M medallist came to the fore in the dour conditions in front of 16,026 fans.
Kernick ran for 169 metres as the Blues claimed the series with one game to spare. John Strange's side can become the first to secure a women's Origin whitewash with victory in Newcastle on May 29.
"I had a feeling tonight she was going to shine, and I thought she led our forward pack really well," NSW captain Isabelle Kelly said of Kernick. "She opens up every space for everyone to be honest especially when she runs."

Angus Crichton calls out Maroons' team-list mind games
Angus Crichton has accused Queensland of subterfuge by naming a hard-to-believe team list for State of Origin II, vowing to terrorise new half Tom Dearden regardless of which forward is beside him. In a wide-ranging interview from NSW camp, Crichton also took a subtle jab at the Maroons for refusing to kick off to Spencer Leniu or Payne Haas in the Origin series opener. But it is the Maroons' published line-up for Origin II in Perth next Wednesday that Crichton finds hardest to believe after the Blues' series-opening 18-6 win in Brisbane. Aside from axing captain and halfback Daly Cherry-Evans, Queensland coach Billy Slater has also dropped Jeremiah Nanai and Pat Carrigan back to the bench. The changes leave Kurt Capewell listed to start at second row and Trent Loiero at lock, but Crichton is having none of the Maroons' claims. "Surely Nanai's not on the bench and surely Patty's not on the bench as well," Crichton said. "I think they're trying to play mind games with us by naming those guys there. I can't see Patty or Jeremiah not starting. He (Nanai) was one of their best last game. "They played all right in that last game. Jeremiah was a point of difference for them on the kick chase, and some of his defence was good. "Then Patty, he's won the Wally Lewis Medal before, so it goes without saying ... they might be trying to play mind games, but we're more focused on ourselves." Regardless of what the Maroons do, Crichton is looking forward to getting at Dearden. The NSW second-rower earned man-of-the-series honours last year after the way he physically went after Cherry-Evans, and he plans to target Dearden in the same way. "It's my job as a back-rower to try and terrorise the opposition halfback," Crichton said. "The more I can get into a physical battle with them, the less we see them. "Some of my best games have been when I've done that, so I'm looking to recreate that with Tommy. I really like him, but it's different when you're playing. "He is a strong little bastard, so he will be running hard. It's a big call for Queensland, he is stepping into the No.7 jersey for the first time. "I know he will be able to bring his best. I just have to make sure I am bringing better." The other major talking point from Origin I was the Maroons' decision to not send a kick-off in the direction of Leniu, who has become arch-enemy No.1 in Queensland. Queensland kicked off to the left and away from Payne Haas for the game's first two restarts, setting up Mitch Barnett and Max King for the return runs. They then sent the next two kick-offs to the right and away from an infuriated Leniu after he had entered the field, again setting up King for the returns. Slater claimed this week it was a decision made "on the run" due to the Maroons being stripped for numbers, but Crichton suggested he knew it was a premeditated call. "I know it was a deliberate decision," Crichton said. "I've heard that from people that were in there. They were told don't kick it to Payne (Haas) or Spencer. "Every rugby league fan wants to see (Leniu take the return), so hopefully they'll do it this time."

'Jump to conclusions': Wally Lewis responds to Broncos fans demands over Maguire
Queensland legend Wally Lewis has warned Brisbane Broncos fans to temper their expectations for the 2025 season having suggested a number of fans were disgruntled with Michael Maguire even though they won on the weekend. In Adam Reynolds' 300th NRL game, the Broncos responded to a number of poor results having hammered the Titans 44-14 at Suncorp Stadium. While the Broncos had lost six of their last seven clashes heading into the clash, the team responded well with Reece Walsh's return helping ignite the attack. Maguire also bowed to pressure having eventually moved Patrick Carrigan back to lock, pushing Kobe Hetherington to the bench. The Broncos looked like a desperate team fighting for their position in the top eight and club legend Darren Lockyer suggested the game would have been a huge "A pressure a bit of pressure the stage was set for then to perform," Lockyer said on QLDER show. "And they did that first half. And hopefully it puts a bit of fun going to work. Because when you are losing it's no fun. They are going into a bye now, I think the key for the Broncos is to back that performance up." However, Lewis felt the message coming from the Broncos fan base is not helping the club. The Queensland legend said he spoke to a number of fans after the game and the consistent message was supporters were not sold on Maguire's reform so far. Although the Broncos great has called for patience with the rebuild. "And it was on the street I was asked by a number of people about Michael Maguire," Lewis said on the show. "'This bloke, surely he can't be a good coach for our to get rid of him already'. Boy, I was thinking you jump to conclusions already, and you are expecting him to take Rome in a day. So, it was remarkable how quickly that had set in." Maguire made a number of changes for the Titans win on Saturday, but the biggest decision was dropping Selwyn Cobbo. Despite having jumped between wing and fullback in 2025, Maguire opted to replace Cobbo with Josiah Karapani against the Titans. And Karapani repaid the faith from his coach having made 15 runs for 176 metres, as well as three tackle breaks and two line breaks. The 23-year-old, who'd only played 11 games in first grade before Saturday night, doubled his career try tally and looked every bit an NRL player. He vindicated coach Michael Maguire's decision to bring him in to replace Cobbo, after also getting the nod over regular first-grader Deine Mariner. Cobbo was spotted at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night, and helped the team run through their warmup drills. While Cobbo was linked to the South Sydney Rabbitohs, this was shut down on Wednesday. Lockyer also suggested the return of Ben Hunt will also hand Maguire a boost heading into the schedule after State of Origin Game 2. Hunt will most likely return as the No.9 with Ezra Mam slotting into the No.6 role while he has been injured. This means Maguire will make further changes to his side with his return expected any week. Hunt will most likely start with either Corey Paix or Billy Walters dropping out of the side completely. "I think Paix and Billy have been good, particularly on the weekend," Lockyer added. "I think they have been complimenting each other very well. When Hunt comes back, Madge has indicated he is going to No.9, it just depends who is going to partner him."

Pat Cummins comes clean after hilarious fail with Jeremy Clarkson before WTC final
Pat Cummins has had to out-think some of the world's greatest cricketers enroute to 294 Test wickets – but he's met his match in the form of a manual farm vehicle. Ahead of the World Test Championship against South Africa at Lord's, starting Wednesday, the Australia captain visited Didley Squat, the farm made famous by Jeremy Clarkson's popular Prime Video Series Clarkson's Farm. Cummins – a Prime Video ambassador - played cricket against Clarkson and co-stars Kaleb Cooper and Charlie Ireland, sampled the homegrown Hawkstone Lager and was brought up to speed with the farm's project to grow willow trees to turn into cricket bats. The Aussie skipper, who owns a farm in the Southern Highlands of NSW, looked right at home until he was asked to park a manual tractor. "It was great. I'm a big fan of Clarkson's Farm on Prime Video, so it was great to go out for a visit and have Jeremy show me the farm and play a little cricket and tried their beer," Cummins told Yahoo Australia. "It's a beautiful part of the country and great to see in person. "It all went well until they put us on this dolly trailer, which is this notoriously hard kind of trailer to try and park. I tried it for 10 minutes and just gave up. I thought I'm never getting this thing in, so I'm not even going to bother trying. "The life of a farmer is just as chaotic as you see on the show, and I was very impressed with Charlie's idea to grow English cricket bat willow. Thanks to Jeremy and the team for hosting me.' Clarkson has previously discussed his dislike for cricket but is slowly coming around after realising he can make a dollar from it. The show's star said: 'I've never been a fan of cricket. I always had too much hay fever to know what was going on, but at least now I've found a way to make some money out of it. We enjoyed showing Pat around Diddly Squat Farm." Prime Video is the first-stop entertainment destination covering Amazon original content like Clarkson's Farm, ICC Cricket and NBA. The World Test Championship final (July 11-15) will be shown on Prime Video from 7.30pm (AEST).
