Motor racing-Russell fastest in first Austrian GP practice as Dunne shines

SPIELBERG, Austria (Reuters) -Mercedes' George Russell kept Max Verstappen off the top of the timesheets with the fastest lap in first Friday practice for the Austrian Grand Prix while Ireland's Alex Dunne made an impressive F1 debut with McLaren.
The Briton, winner from pole position in Canada two weeks ago, lapped the Red Bull Ring with a best time of one minute 05.542 seconds.
Red Bull's reigning world champion Verstappen, five times a winner at Spielberg and without regular race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase for the weekend due to personal reasons with Simon Rennie taking over, was 0.065 slower.
McLaren's Formula One leader Oscar Piastri was third, 0.155 off the pace.
Formula Two leader Dunne, taking Lando Norris's McLaren for the season as part of the team's obligation to give track time to young drivers, was fourth fastest and only 0.069 slower than Piastri.
Dunne, still only 19 and the first Irish driver in 22 years to take part in a grand prix weekend, thanked the team over the radio as the chequered flag fell.
"A little boy's dream came true, and this is definitely the best day of my life," he said. "Thank you everyone for letting me do this, and thanks to Lando as well for trusting me with his car."
Norris, 22 points behind Piastri after 10 of 24 races, will be back for the second session -- his first time on track since he collided with his Australian teammate in Canada while challenging for fourth place.
Austria has the shortest lap of the year in terms of time and all but 20th-placed Haas driver Oliver Bearman were within a second of Russell.
Pierre Gasly was fifth for Alpine with Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto sixth for Sauber and Alex Albon seventh for Williams ahead of teammate Carlos Sainz.
Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton was ninth as Ferrari had a difficult start to their preparations with both cars in the garage during the session with mechanics working on floor and gearbox.
Hamilton's teammate Charles Leclerc sat out the session with Swedish reserve Dino Beganovic getting some track time and finishing 18th.
Isack Hadjar made it seven different teams in the top 10 with the 10th fastest lap for Racing Bulls.
Fernando Alonso had a big spin in his Aston Martin but kept the car out of the barriers.

Brentford appoint former set-piece coach Andrews as new manager
LONDON: Brentford on Friday confirmed the appointment of former set-piece coach Keith Andrews as their new manager to replace Thomas Frank. Frank left the Bees to take charge of Tottenham earlier this month after guiding Brentford to a 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season. Andrews was the surprise choice to succeed Frank, with Brentford reportedly picking him ahead of Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna and former Ajax manager Francesco Farioli. Owner Matthew Benham's decision to hand Andrews his first managerial role is a significant gamble. Andrews, a former Irish international, joined Brentford's backroom staff in 2024 to work as their set-piece expert. Andrews established Brentford as one of the Premier League's most effective sides at set-pieces last season and was also hailed for his impact on their habit of scoring early in games. "I love being on the grass, I love developing young players, I love seeing the growth in young players as players and as human beings. There's clear alignment between myself and the football club on that," he said. However, Andrews takes over facing a potential rebuilding job at Gtech Community Stadium. Goalkeeper Mark Flekken has joined Bayer Leverkusen, winger Bryan Mbeumo is the subject of a second bid from Manchester United and midfielder Christian Norgaard is reportedly set to move to Arsenal. "Keith is a very, very good person," said director of football Phil Giles. "He has good values and fits our culture well. He gets on with everyone, he's very open and he's a learner. "He's got very clear ideas about how he wants the team to improve.... He's a perfect fit for what we were looking for."

Kuang was the head of autonomy at General Motors' self-driving unit, Cruise, till last year, according to his LinkedIn profile. His appointment comes at a time when Tesla has seen a series of high-profile departures in the past year, including the resignation of two senior executives on Thursday. Tesla did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment, while Kuang could not be reached. While Kuang's role at Tesla is not clear, Ashok Elluswamy, who was the first engineer hired for Tesla's Autopilot team in 2014, has largely been leading the company's self-driving initiatives. Omead Afshar, a top Tesla executive and longtime Elon Musk confidant, left the electric-vehicle maker along with North America HR Director Jenna Ferrua, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Thursday. Tesla is going through sweeping company-wide restructuring, during which the electric vehicle maker has laid off thousands of employees and shifted its strategic focus toward AI-driven self-driving technology and robotics. The 36-year-old Ireland international signed the deal just three days before his previous contract expired. He was forced off in the first half of Everton's final game at Goodison Park last month with a thigh injury but is expected to be fit in time for next season. "Thanks to the hard work of many people, we've been able to get into our magnificent new stadium and pave the way for a brighter future under ambitious new owners (Friedkin Group), which I want to be part of," Coleman said in a statement. Coleman joined the Merseyside club from Sligo Rovers in 2009 during David Moyes' first spell as manager. Moyes joined for a second spell in January, guiding Everton to a 13th-place finish. "In David Moyes, we have the perfect manager to lead us into a new era. He showed his abilities once again with the way he had us playing after returning last season. "As the man who brought me to Everton, I can't speak highly enough of him. He gets this football club, the standards required every day, and what it means to play for Everton." Coleman holds the club record for most Premier League appearances (369) and is joint 12th on Everton's all-time list with 428 matches in all competitions, just five behind Dixie Dean and Leon Osman. "This could be a period of real change at the Club and I want somebody who can help deliver the messages of what it means to be an Everton footballer.
