ARMOURED cars have been spotted cruising London's streets after cops splashed out on military 4x4s to tackle extreme rioting.
With matte-grey paint, flashing blue lights and the word "police" on the side written in block capitals, the hefty vehicles are hard to miss.

Several of the military-grade tanks intended to tackle rioting have been spotted weaving between lanes in London.
These are the "Sandcats" - the newest addition to the Met Police's fleet, estimated to cost around £180,000.
The mammoth 9,000kg 4x4s can transport up to 11 officers and stands at 7ft 7in tall.
The new armoured cars will be used for 'high-risk armed policing operations' and 18 have been ordered in total.

The Met Police said the new trucks aren't yet being used in operations.
The force is currently training drivers, which is why they have been seen driving around London.
A spokesperson said: 'These are specialist armoured vehicles used for high-risk armed policing operations, by officers deployed at airports and as a contingency option for use in the most serious public disorder the like of which we thankfully rarely see."
Sandcats are manufactured by Israeli company Plasan and have been used by the military in several countries.

According to the company website, the Sandcat Tigris is the preferred choice for both the IDF and Ministry of Defence.
They replace the older Jankel models, which were deployed during the 2011 riots but have very rarely been used.

The bullet-resistant Jankel Guardians that the force previously used cost about £100,000 each.
The seven-tonne personnel carrier could withstand AK-47 bullets and had a bomb-proof floor.
Over the past year or so, the UK has been rocked by disorder and rioting in the streets.
This week, masked yobs lobbed petrol bombs and fireworks at cops across four days of chaos across Northern Ireland.

Police described the riots as "racially-motivated hate attacks" with a senior officer slamming the scenes as "racist thuggery".
Several houses even put up signs identifying their residents as British or Filipino in an apparent attempt to avoid being targeted.
Violence originally erupted on Monday, stemming from an initially peaceful gathering to support a girl and her family after an alleged sexual assault.
Girl 'whose sex assault by teen boys' sparked 'racist' riots wants violence to end as 4th night of carnage erupts
By Emily Jane Davies
A YOUNG girl whose sexual assault by teenage boys sparked riots across Northern Ireland has called for an end to the violence.
Northern Ireland Police Chief Jon Boutcher said the girl had been "further traumatised" by the riots - as the fourth night of chaos unfolded yesterday.
Police quickly clamped down on hundreds of rioters who were spotted throwing missiles and petrol bombs in Portadown - less than an hour from where the riots started - last night.
Shocking footage showed thugs lobbing live fireworks at rows of police riot vans.
The chaos began in Ballymena on Monday night, hours after two 14-year-old boys appeared in court charged with attempted rape of a girl.
The boys confirmed their names - which cannot be reported - and their ages through a Romanian interpreter at Coleraine Magistrates' Court.
Cops decried the mass carnage which followed as "racist thuggery".
Northern Ireland's Chief Constable told how the girl's family had been left "mortified" by the horrific scenes.
Speaking yesterday, he said: "I reiterate the retraumatising of this poor girl, she's been through enough through what happened to her on Saturday evening. She doesn't want any of this.
"I know the family are mortified. I've spoken to them personally, they've asked me to make this plea.#
"This girl's family and this girl want it to end. Our communities want it to end. We need it to end.
"Stop this violence. We will come after you. We will arrest you. We will prosecute you successfully.
"I want to specifically mention the 41 police officers who've been injured. Each of those officers have put themselves in harm's way to protect our communities.
"It is not in any way a way for a civilised society to behave and it must stop now."
Northern Ireland Police Chief Jon Boutcher said the girl had been "further traumatised" by the riots.

Last summer, Britain was a tinderbox as widespread unrest and disorder broke out following misinformation about the Southport child killer.
Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe and Alice Da Silva Aguiar were murdered in a knife attack and social media posts falsely claimed they were killed by an illegal migrant.
The disgraceful rioters torched cars, police stations and mosques.
In 2020, Scotland Yard put out a notice saying it wanted to buy a new fleet of military-style trucks to tackle public disorder, firearms incidents and riots in the capital.
It wanted security, fire-fighting and defence equipment and armour plating.
Last year, it was reported that Police Scotland's £282,000 battle machine meant to be driven by "action man officers" has never been used.
The gas-guzzling 4x4 beasts are used by military specialists in warzones and by police tackling drug cartels in South America.
Yet, Police Scotland's bulletproof Sandcat has been locked in storage collecting dust for two years.

Insiders have previously claimed the reason it has remained idle is from a lack of officers able to drive it, with regular training needed to operate it.
The force has refused to comment on how many of its staff can use the 4x4 Sandcat.
Underneath the Sandcat's hood lies a huge 6.7-litre V8 engine that only does around nine mpg, which is about as fuel-efficient as an F1 racing car.
Although the armoured car hasn't seen any action, the force still believes it's necessary to keep it.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said at the time: "The specialist vehicle can be used in a number of scenarios linked to a major incident and improves our options to keep people safe.
"While it has not yet been deployed to a major incident, it has been used for training purposes and it provides additional operational capabilities."

Israel v Iran LIVE: Israel vows ‘Tehran will burn' after Iran launches revenge strikes killing 3 & injuring dozens

ISRAEL has vowed "Tehran will burn" after Iran launched hundreds of missiles - raising fears of an all-out war in the Middle East. At least three people have been killed and dozens more wounded in the overnight stikes on Tel Aviv and Jerusalem - while Israel continued to pound targets in Iran. Israel killed top military leaders, nuclear scientists and blasted secretive sites believed to be being used by Iran to develop nuclear weapons. And overnight, Iran hit back with four waves of missiles - hitting civilian areas and damaging neighbourhoods around Tel Aviv. Defence minister Israel Katz said Iran "crossed red lines after it dared to attack the civilian population" and will now "pay a heavy price for it". Advertisement He added: "If Khamenei continues to fire missiles at the Israeli home front, Tehran will burn." Reports emerged that Israel's version of the Pentagon - the HaKirya - had been hit, though these were not confirmed. Tehran branded the retaliatory strikes as a "punishment" attack on Israel. Iran has also warned the United Kingdom, the United States and France to not get involved or they will be considered targets. Advertisement Both sides have warned more is yet to come, with Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowing to inflict "heavy blows". He said his armed forces will bring the "vile regime [Israel] to ruin". Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Iran that "more is on the way" and warned "the regime does not know what will hit them". Netanyahu also appealed directly to "the proud people of Iran", urging them "stand up and let your voices be heard" as Israel undertakes "one of the greatest military operations in history". Advertisement But his calls were offset by jubilant scenes on the streets of Tehran, where crowds gathered on Friday night to revel in the regime's show of defiance. Earlier on Friday, Iran's war machine stood in ruins following a ferocious Israeli blitz which killed top generals, destroyed nuclear facilities, and shattered missile bases. Israel, with its unmatched air force, powerful missile defences, and intelligence reach, demonstrated its ability to hit Iran at its core. Iran, while weakened, still commands regional proxy networks like Hezbollah and the Houthis - forces that could be unleashed in asymmetric retaliation. Advertisement Iran described Israel's multifaceted offensive as a "declaration of war", and said it considers the US to "share full responsibility" - despite the Americans absolving themselves of collaborating in the strikes. Iran's representative to the UN said that 78 people had been killed and more than 320 others injured by the Israeli attacks on Tehran. 9 Israeli Prime Minister appealed to the Iranian people to rise up Credit: AFP 9 The first strikes hit Tehran in the early hours of Friday Credit: AP Advertisement 9 People pick through rubble buildings in Nobonyad Square in Tehran following Israeli airstrikes Credit: Getty 9 Stay up to date with the latest on Israel vs Iran with The Sun's live blog below...

Is Israel ready for a long war with Iran?

The spectacular Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear, missile and military sites and their commanders and scientists astonished the Israeli public as well as the world. It was a combination of accurate intelligence and brilliant execution by the Israeli Air Force and Mossad operatives. The intelligence preparations for this operation, codenamed' Rising Lion', lasted more than a year. Mossad agents infiltrated Iran and created a network of agents, assistants, safe houses, workshops, vehicles, forged documents and cover stories – alongside advanced technologies. They also smuggled drone components into Iran, before assembling and hiding them there. These drones took part in the attack. In a sense the attack was reminiscent of the sophisticated Ukrainian drone attack deep inside Russia targeting air bases and destroying aircraft two weeks ago. However, Mossad has been deploying such tactics for three years or so now. In 2022, its operatives launched drones from Iranian soil which destroyed over 100 of Tehran's own drones. For more than a decade and a half, Mossad – with the help of the Israeli military intelligence – has repeatedly succeeded in penetrating Iran and exposing it. This has, in the past, enabled the assassination of nuclear scientists, missile force commanders and IRGC officers, and led to the sabotage of nuclear and missile sites. What also contributed to Israel's success yesterday was the fact that, in April 2024 and again last October, the Israeli Air Force destroyed much of Iran's air defence network. This left it exposed, allowing Israeli warplanes to fly almost freely in Iranian skies. What helped the operation to succeed was a ploy that fooled Iran's military leadership. By sending fabricated signals, Israeli intelligence managed to lure the top commanders of the IRGC's aerospace arm into gathering on Thursday night in an underground command centre. They stayed there until 3 a.m. on Friday without knowing that was Israel's H-hour. The top echelon of the air force, including its commander, General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, were killed. Among the most significant achievements of Rising Lion were the eliminations of Mohammad Bagheri (the chief of staff of Iran's armed forces) and Hossein Salami (the head of the IRGC). These deaths are a major blow not just morally and psychologically for Iran, but also operationally in the short term. At least, that is, until their replacements – appointed quickly as a show of defiance toward Israel and to signal continuity – can assume their roles. US President Donald Trump seems to have also had a role in deceiving the Iranians. He gave Iran the impression that he was committed to the stalled negotiations on reaching a nuclear deal, with the knowledge that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was pushing for imminent strikes. The main aim of the Israeli operation was to destroy as much as possible of Iranian nuclear sites and to kill Iranian scientists who participated in the nuclear program. The security establishment is preparing for the possibility that the confrontation with Iran will last several more days, all the while hoping it does not escalate into a prolonged war of attrition. But it appears that Netanyahu is pushing to continue the war, driven by personal and political motivations. It is important to remember that the Iranians, known for their stubbornness and their historic self-perception as the 'oppressed of the earth', are well-versed in long, gruelling wars of attrition. One need only recall the war imposed on Iran by the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in 1979. Hussein expected a brief conflict, but instead found himself in an eight-year war. The Israeli public is exhausted Since 2009, Netanyahu has raised the idea and formulated plans to attack Iran's nuclear sites, but he always backed off at the last minute – or was restrained by Barack Obama, Trump (during his first term) or Joe Biden. There is no doubt that what occurred yesterday is the realisation of Netanyahu's long-standing vision. He has repeatedly warned of the existential threat posed by Iran and has compared it to the Nazi threat. It is likely that Netanyahu will see a rise in public support and may attempt to prolong the campaign to capitalise on his success. Iran's nuclear programme now faces an uncertain future. One option for the country's leadership is to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), as North Korea once did. Another is to enrich uranium from its current 60 per cent level to 90 per cent, which weapons-grade. It could also declare it is actively working to assemble a nuclear bomb, a process that might take months to a year. Meanwhile, the Israeli public – exhausted from the Gaza war, a political crisis, and deep national division – must grapple with the government's decision and all its economic, social, and psychological consequences. After the initial shock, Iran recovered and launched in six waves 200 ballistic missiles at Tel Aviv and its surrounding areas. Dozens of buildings were damaged, dozens of cars destroyed and three people were killed and many injured. Israeli air space is closed. There is no guarantee that once the dust settles from the current military euphoria, there will be any strategic achievement. It could just as easily lead to a reality where Israel is doomed to live forever by the sword.
