Reed Blankenship has become a critical cog in the Eagles' Super Bowl history, and he's continuing to add honors to his resume. Blankenship joined the Eagles as an undrafted free agent out of Middle Tennessee State and played his first two seasons at the NFL's minimum salary before earning escalators and a one-year extension.
Now a Super Bowl champion and one of the best young safeties in the NFL, Blankenship just had his No. 12 football jersey retired by West Limestone High School in Lester, Alabama.
Blankenship logged 78 tackles (52 solo), six pass defenses (including four interceptions), and one fumble recovery in 15 regular-season games in 2024. Blankenship improved during the playoffs, logging 27 tackles (18 solo), one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery during the Eagles ' four-game run to the Super Bowl.
Blankenship signed a one-year, $3.58 million contract extension with the Eagles last April after leading the team in tackles and interceptions.
Blankenship could be in line for another, more lucrative contract extension.

In December, the former Pittsburgh Steelers safety called the team's new quarterback a "fraud" for Rodgers' criticism about the way the NFL is covered now. In April, Clark said the free agent situation with Rodgers made him sick, adding the entire situation was mishandled. Now Rodgers has agreed to a contract with the Steelers, meaning he'll suit up for Clark's former team this season. As expected, the safety-turned-analyst has some thoughts on the 41-year-old's new NFL venture. "This is the worst-case scenario for Pittsburgh Steelers fans," Clark said in an appearance on "SportsCenter" following the news. "It continues to keep you mired in mediocrity. Will this team be better? Have they gotten better in the quarterback room? Absolutely. Will they contend for that championship that Pittsburgh Steelers' people, fans, and the organization thinks is the standard? No, they won't." While Clark did acknowledge that Rodgers will eventually be in the Hall of Fame one day, he pointed out that it's too little, too late for a guy that is potentially past his prime. "Five years from when both of these men retire, one of them will give the most motivational Hall of Fame speech we've ever heard," Clark said. "Another will probably give the most interesting – and it won't mean anything." He went on to add that they'll fight for a spot in the wild card round and then probably be going home during that week, all to look for a franchise quarterback again next offseason. After being given the night to let the news settle in, Clark was back at it when he appeared on ESPN's "Get Up" Friday morning. "I'm not here to bash Aaron Rodgers," Clark said. "I believe that Aaron Rodgers is an upgrade to Mason Rudolph. I even believe that Aaron Rodgers is a slight upgrade to what Russell Wilson was last year. Aaron Rodgers is no longer elite. Aaron Rodgers doesn't walk into the building with the cache that says to the rest of the organization, 'this is our guy that's gonna allow us to win a championship.'" Clark continued, saying this is what the Steelers had to do to compete this season, but that won't be enough to compete with teams like the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills or Baltimore Ravens. "You can get Aaron Rodgers so you can not stink," Clark said. "That's it. Other than that, all of us are gonna watch the divisional round, the championship round and the Super Bowl together." Texans newcomer C.J. Gardner-Johnson named top 15 safety for 2025 season C.J. Gardner-Johnson might be new to the Houston Texans, but he's well-versed in seeing his name on Pro Football Focus' list among safeties. Gardner-Johnson, who was acquired by the Texans earlier this offseason from the Philadelphia Eagles, came in at No. 13 on PFF's top 32 safeties list. Despite being a newcomer in H-Town, his ability to make plays on the football and force incompletions will come in handy for DeMeco Ryans' defense this fall. "Gardner-Johnson put together the best season of his career in 2024 — and not just because he hoisted the Lombardi Trophy with the Eagles," PFF's Zoltán Buday wrote. "His 1,170 snaps were a career high, as was his 77.0 PFF overall grade that ranked 14th among safeties. The now-Texan's 85.7 PFF coverage grade last season placed sixth among 96 qualifying safeties." Acquired in exchange for offensive lineman Kenyon Green and a Day 3 pick, Gardner-Johnson is supposed to be the missing piece to a secondary that ranked top 10 in takeaways and coverage last season. He's been consistent in coverage, totaling 11 interceptions during his last two stints with the Eagles. While the Texans should feel content at the cornerback position after an All-Pro season from Derek Stingley Jr., they need stability at safety. Rookie Calen Bullock still has room to improve and Jimmie Ward has dealt with two season-ending injuries since his arrival in 2023. The Texans also need a culture-changer in the locker room to promote that 'SWARM' mentality Ryans preaches. In a brief time, Gardner-Johnson has carried that mantle with grace. "He's one hell of a ball player," cornerback Kamari Lassiter said on Tuesday following OTAs. "He really understands the game. He's played for a long time and he comes with his own energy. He just comes with his own passion and it affects the players around him. You can see, just watching this film, how his energy and how he talks and how he plays the game, it affects people around him, whether it's on the opposite side of the ball or whether it's on his side of the ball.'
