West Yorkshire Fire Service to donate engines to Ukraine

BBC News02-03-2025

Four fire engines from West Yorkshire will be donated to Ukraine to help deal with the devastation caused by the Russian invasion.Councillors from across West Yorkshire agreed to donate the vehicles at a meeting of West Yorkshire Fire Authority on Thursday.A further two engines will be sent to UK charities that support veterans.A report to members said the Ukraine State Emergency Service had been "under significant pressure since the current conflict began in February 2022".
The report said 396 fire stations and 1,676 fire vehicles had been destroyed in the war-torn country since the invasion.Ninety-one 91 firefighters had been killed and a further 349 injured."In the same period, the work of Ukrainian firefighters has grown significantly in response to the ongoing destruction of property, with approximately 217,000 buildings destroyed or damaged and 5,000 people rescued from fires and collapsed buildings," the report said.Members of the authority were told that the service was in the process of replacing 58 of its older vehicles, with 10 of them being kept for training and others auctioned off.But the services planned to donate some of the vehicles to help fire services in Ukraine. The vehicles would be sent over in early April, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. Two other engines will be donated to Brooklands Museum Volunteer Fire Service and South East Fire and Rescue, which is a volunteer group made up of military veterans and emergency services staff.Originally, six engines were due to be sent to Ukraine in April, but logistics meant only four could be sent from West Yorkshire. The remaining two will be kept in the UK, to be sent at a future date if needed.
'Good impact'
The donation is expected to cost the fire service about £65,000 in potential lost earnings from the auction of the vehicles.Glynn Richardson, head of transport at the fire service, said: "There would be a modest reduction in income, but in this instance the good these vehicles could do and the impact on communities in Ukraine will outweigh any revenue losses for us."Councillor Cahal Burke questioned whether similar support had been offered to other war-torn countries, and said : "We're asking our constituents to pay more tax when we're giving away vehicles that could raise £65,000."Chief Fire Officer John Roberts said in the past the service had provided support to countries across the world, including Ghana and Montenegro.Listen to highlights from West Yorkshire on BBC Sounds, catch up with the latest episode of Look North or tell us a story you think we should be covering by emailing yorkshirestories@bbc.co.uk.

How the UK could get dragged further into conflict in the Middle East

As the whole world knows by now, Israel launched a series of devastating attacks on Iran in the early hours of Friday, targeting nuclear facilities and the regime's leadership. Operation Rising Lion seems to have caught the Iranians wrong-footed. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Two hundred IAF warplanes were involved, and most interestingly a number of drones were launched by Israeli special forces from within Iran itself, in a pastiche of the Ukrainian drone attacks against Russian airbases a few days ago. Initial battlefield damage assessment suggests that the attacks were highly successful, although the full details will probably take some time to emerge. Amongst others, the head of the Iranian Republican Guard Corps, Hossein Salami, and Mohammad Bagheri, commander-in-chief of Iran's military, plus several senior figures in Iran's nuclear programme were killed. Iran's three top military generals were killed in the attacks that also targeted nuclear and military facilities | Majid Saeedi At a stroke Iran's senior military hierarchy has been eliminated. That Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khameni was not among them is only down to Israel, who probably thought his demise might be a step too far at this stage. The Israeli assault should come as no surprise to anyone. Iran is the fount of all evil in the region, and the writing has been on the wall for some time. The recent IAEA censure of Iran's nuclear programme and the withdrawal of some US personnel in the Middle East were dead giveaways. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Israel made no secret of its assessment that currently Iran is politically and militarily weak, and there was hardly a better moment to strike its nuclear facilities and leadership. And so it has come to pass. Where USA goes, UK will surely follow This episode in the long-running conflict between Israel and Iran looks like it might be a longer confrontation than previous ones. If it continues for any length of time, and if Iran carries through its threat to attack US bases as well as Israel in retaliation, then it seems to me inevitable that the USA will be drawn in. And where the USA goes the UK will surely follow. During the last tit-for-tat exchanges between the two Middle Eastern states RAF Typhoons were involved in knocking down incoming Iranian drones to defend Israel. I'd be most surprised if the same thing doesn't happen this time around. Britain's retained bases in Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean include RAF Akrotiri, which is an important link in the communications chain to Israel and used by the UK, USA, and others for many years. And the Americans have long-range bombers on Diego Garcia. To survive Iran needs to stop being intransigent over its nuclear problem and compromise or else face the very real prospect of defeat and regime change.

Russian forces break into yet another Ukrainian region

Vladimir Putin's summer offensive is fully under way: all day and night, Russian infantrymen run at Ukrainian positions in endless waves. Even when struck, the survivors don't retreat or take cover but keep running forward, until there are so many of them that no amount of drones or shells can stop them. That's how Russian troops have broken into yet another Ukrainian region: the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. The push came near the village of Horikhove, on the border between the Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions, as the Kremlin declared a new phase in its 'denazification' campaign. Dmitry Peskov, Putin's press secretary, claimed that the Russian penetration into the region is part of an effort to create a buffer zone in Ukraine, but this phrase is no more than the Kremlin's usual code for territories it has yet to seize but fully intends to.
