Players left themselves too much to do, admits McAuley
Leicestershire head coach Chris McAuley accepts his players left themselves too much to do in their Bill Beaumont Men's County Championship Division 3 final against Hertfordshire at the Allianz Stadium, Twickenham.
McAuley's side found their opponents in a clinical mood in the first half of their 29-10 defeat at the home of English rugby as four tries put Hertfordshire on a dominant position they never looked like giving up.
The Foxes appeared to have a glimmer of hope when lock Jack Burrows plunged over for a try in the 55th minute, but any hope of a comeback was quickly snuffed out by another Herts score.
Leicestershire found themselves a man up after Hertfordshire's Luke Mongston was sent off for a dangerous tackle, but they couldn't find a way through some determined defence.
McAuley said: 'I think we left ourselves with a lot to do – if you look back at the time, there were a few 'patience errors'.
'We coughed up possession a bit easily, we got a bit excited at times.
'I think their last try was indicative of the game – if you look at the tries they scored, I think they had to work for one of them, but they are a really good threat on the counter attack.
'We knew that when we knew we'd be playing against them and it's just one of those things, if they've got a weapon they can use, they can really hurt you.'
Despite it ending in defeat, McAuley looks back on Leicestershire's campaign with a lot of pride as it continued the progress the county's current crop of players, who have trained at Leicester Forest RFC, have made in recent years.
No longer being able to select players from the National Leagues may mean they have to look at players from lower in the rugby pyramid, but it has also increased their options.
McAuley, who has recently left positions as Leicester Lions backs coach and Leicester De Montfort University head coach, said: 'With how we were originally, we were struggling for players because we'd always been choosing from National League clubs – we had three of them.
'So, for this new Level 5 and below rule there's so many clubs and it gives so many players access to something they'd never had before.
'In the early stage it was difficult trying to find players, whereas now we've restored a lot of pride in it and now it's become something cherished by the players.'

Having built a global fan base through the award-winning 'Welcome to Wrexham' documentary series, we take a look at the main characters involved... The owners – Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney Jaws dropped when Hollywood A-lister Reynolds, star of the Deadpool franchise, and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia co-creator McElhenney revealed their intention to buy Wrexham in September 2020. Liverpool get chance to land cut-price transfer after major decision confirmed
Liverpool have been linked with Lyon star Malick Fofana and the club's financial woes could benefit the Reds, allowing them to secure a cut-price deal for the winger Liverpool could complete a cut-price move for winger Malick Fofana after seven-time French champions Lyon were relegated to Ligue 2 due to the poor state of their finances. The club were provisionally relegated in November, but were given a chance to show that things had improved. However, the National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG) were unconvinced and rubber-stamped Lyon's demotion on Tuesday. American businessman John Textor owns a 77 percent stake in Lyon through his Eagle Football Group, which posted debts of £422million back in October. Lyon have branded the decision to relegate the club "incomprehensible" and have said they will immediately file an appeal. It remains to be seen what the outcome of that appeal will be, but a number of clubs may look to swoop for Lyon's stars if they are no longer a topflight club. And Fofana has been linked with Liverpool already this summer, with Sky Sports Switzerland reporting earlier this month that the Reds' chief scout Barry Hunter is a huge fan of the 20-year-old. The report states that Liverpool are 'genuinely interested' in Fofana, but will have to sell Federico Chiesa before they can make a move for the winger. Chiesa struggled for game-time after joining the club from Juventus last season and has been linked with a return to Italy this summer. And Fofana's former representatives, BF SportsPartner, have claimed that Liverpool would be the player's dream move. They told Africafoot earlier this year: "The choice of heart would be Liverpool. "He has the potential to enter the rotation, and above all, we would like to see him succeed African legends such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and El-Hadji Diouf. He has the profile to succeed in the Premier League. "He possesses qualities similar to those of Manchester United's Amad Diallo, namely speed, impact, and the ability to create opportunities. There's no doubt he can shine. "For him, this would be an opportunity to continue his development and, above all, to showcase his talent in a league that favours transitional play. However, he'll have to choose the right club, as competition is fierce across the (English) Channel." Fofana recently changed his representatives, signing with Roc Nation Sports in April. Roc Nation was founded by American rapper Jay-Z and counts a number of high-profile footballers among their clients, including Vinicius Jr, Gabriel Martinelli, Kevin De Bruyne and Endrick.

Hibs are in 'advanced talks' with former Dundee star Josh Mulligan, as the 22-year-old free agent closes in on a move to Easter Road. The Edinburgh club have seen off competition from a number of SPFL rivals – and teams down south – to put themselves in pole position to land the versatile all-rounder. Rangers were known to have begun talks with Mulligan, who can play in central midfield, at right back or on the right wing, while Charlton Athletic were also credited with an interest in a player who has been a Dens Park regular for the past three seasons. But Hibs have swooped into stand on the brink of a deal, it is understood, with a source close to negotiations describing talks as being at an advanced stage. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad David Gray is pursuing players in a number of positions and, although he's well covered at right wingback, Mulligan's versatility – as well as his youth and first-team experience in the Scottish Premiership – put him on the Hibs gaffer's radar. With the Easter Road club eager to compete on multiple fronts this season, as they look to follow their third place finish in the table AND make it through to the league phases of either the Europa League or Europa Conference League, Gray is keen to add quality bodies to the squad. Mulligan's Dundee contract expired at the end of the season, effectively leaving him to take his pick of potential suitors. And it appears that he's ready to commit to Hibs. Bushiri and Triantis talks still alive The club remain in talks with central defender Rocky Bushiri, meanwhile, despite the Democratic Republic of Congo's contract having expired at the end of the campaign. Bushiri is due to report back for pre-season training along with all of Hibernian's other international players on Friday, with Gray describing 'positive talks' with the cult hero. Gray is also in the market for at least one striker. So far this summer, he's welcomed pre-contract acquisition Jamie McGrath, with the attacking midfielder expected to compete for position in the No. 10 role. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The manager's priority is on keeping the most important members of last year's squad together, with Sunderland midfielder Nectar Triantis still the No. 1 target. The Australian has a number of options, including at least two MLS clubs, to weigh up.
