Settle summonses or face enforcement, RTD warns commercial operators

New Straits Times13 hours ago

KOTA BARU: The Road Transport Department (RTD) says it will act against express buses and commercial goods vehicles that fail to settle outstanding summonses within the 14-day deadline.
RTD director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the deadline will end on July 8, after which enforcement will follow.
He said the vehicles will be blacklisted and barred from the roads if payment is not made before the deadline.
"We guarantee that by midnight on the final day, RTD officers will be on the roads to act against the vehicles found to have unsettled summonses. We are fully prepared for this.
"Since the announcement by Transport Minister Anthony Loke last Friday, company operators have been rushing to pay their summonses.
"If any company feels the number of summonses issued does not match their records, they are welcome to visit the nearest RTD office for verification.
"They may even find that they have more summonses upon further checks," he said.
He was speaking at a press conference after attending the RTD's Setia Assembly here today.
Also present was RTD senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan.

KLIA Aerotrain returns July 1: Anwar to officiate relaunch, Loke applauds revival

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 — The KLIA Aerotrain will resume full operations tomorrow at 10am after nearly 28 months of suspension. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to officiate the launch at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 (KLIA T1). Bernama reported that the upgraded automated people mover system is part of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd's (MAHB) airport transformation agenda. 'A big thanks to everyone who worked day and night to bring the Aerotrain back,' Transport Minister Anthony Loke said in a Facebook post today. The Aerotrain, an icon of KLIA since 1998, underwent a RM456 million overhaul to replace its ageing fleet and infrastructure under MAHB's RM742 million Airport Regeneration Plan. The modernised system now uses Alstom Innovia APM 300R three-car driverless trainsets that can carry up to 270 passengers at speeds of 56 kilometres per hour. The journey between the main terminal and the satellite building now takes under three minutes. Each train is equipped with advanced condition monitoring systems to reduce disruptions, improve operational efficiency and enhance passenger safety and comfort. The Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) conducted six months of testing and commissioning for the new system between January and June 2025. MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said extensive technical and safety tests were implemented to ensure fault-free operations. The project, initially targeted for completion in March 2025, faced delays due to global supply chain issues, system integration challenges and the complexity of installing a new driverless system while maintaining airport operations. KLIA T1 handles over 100,000 passenger movements daily, with the Aerotrain playing a key role in ensuring smooth transfers for international passengers. The satellite terminal hosts many long-haul carriers, making fast terminal connections essential to reduce missed connections and support seamless travel. With the Aerotrain back in service, KLIA is positioned to handle growing passenger volumes ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026 and the airport's projected return to pre-pandemic traffic levels.

RTS Link fares to be revealed closer to launch, says Loke as Malaysia, Singapore unveil first train set

SINGAPORE, June 30 — The operator of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link is conducting a final market study to determine ticket fares, with the final pricing and fare mechanism to be announced closer to the service's launch, Malaysia's Transport Minister Anthony Loke said on Monday. 'We hope that the right price mechanism is in place to ensure that it can encourage more people to use the RTS service. 'The whole idea of this project is to make the modal shift, to ensure that more people use public transport to cross the Causeway,' he said at a joint press conference with Singapore acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow, after unveiling the first of the eight RTS Link train sets at the Singapore Rail Test Centre (SRTC) here. The event was also attended by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. RTS Operations Pte Ltd (RTSO), a joint venture between Prasarana RTS Operations Sdn Bhd and SMRT RTS Pte Ltd, is the operator of the RTS Link, a cross-border rail connecting Malaysia and Singapore. Loke said the Malaysian government was pushing for a more open payment system, in line with global public transport trends, which would allow commuters to use multiple modes of payment. Singapore's Siow said fares should be determined commercially by RTSO, taking into account demand and supply, as well as costs. Meanwhile, Loke said RTSO would also finalise the operating hours for the train service, which links Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru to Woodlands North in Singapore, by taking into account early commuters. 'One principle which is very important is that no urban rail will operate 24 hours. We need to have a few hours of engineering and normal (routine) maintenance,' he said. Loke said the project would not only help to improve the lives of cross-border commuters but also represent strengthened ties between Malaysia and Singapore amidst increasing global trade protectionism. 'In other parts of the world, people are busy setting up barriers. 'Here, we are breaking down barriers, building more connectivity, building more bridges, and this is something which will bring both Singapore and Malaysia closer together, particularly between Singapore and Johor Bahru,' he said, adding that it is a major component of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). — Bernama

Loke: RTS Link will strengthen Malaysia-Singapore relationship

SINGAPORE: The Johor Baru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link is not merely a transportation infrastructure project but a symbol of renewed trust, stronger ties and shared aspirations between Malaysia and Singapore. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the project, which is set to begin operations on Jan 1, 2027, will significantly ease traffic congestion at the Johor Causeway while improving the lives of thousands who commute across the border daily. "This is not just about launching a train. It's about what it represents — two nations coming together again to build something greater than ourselves," he said at the launch of the first RTS Link train at the Singapore Rail Test Centre in Tuas, today. He said such a large-scale bilateral undertaking involved complex discussions and negotiations, but both sides had demonstrated the commitment needed to bring the project to life. "The RTS Link is a realisation of a long-term vision — to reduce congestion, save time and provide better connectivity between Malaysia and Singapore, whether for work, family or opportunity," he said. Also present was acting Singaporean Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow. Loke said the RTS Link was also a core enabler of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), helping facilitate seamless movement of people and skilled labour across both countries. "Without RTS Link, I don't believe the JS-SEZ would be as impactful or transformative. This rail line is a crucial part of that vision," he said. Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) confirmed that major civil works have been completed for the Marine Viaduct, Bukit Chagar Station, and Wadi Hana Depot as of May 31. Interior works at Wadi Hana Depot are now 80 per cent complete and targeted for full completion by October. At Bukit Chagar Station, the roof façade installation is progressing steadily, while the Immigration, Customs and Quarantine (CIQ) complex has reached 90 per cent in structural work, with interior progress at 45 per cent. "The next major milestone is dynamic testing of the entire RTS train system, scheduled for May next year. "This phase will involve trial runs from Wadi Hana Depot to Bukit Chagar to validate readiness for full operations," said MRT Corp. With all key components progressing on schedule, MRT Corp is confident that the project will be fully operational by the end of December 2026.
