Marcelo Mayer was the Red Sox prospect who got all sorts of attention this past weekend as he was called up for his major league debut Saturday. On Monday night, another minor leaguer got some national love.

MassLive's Chris Smith wrote about the origins about the nickname in June 2024. Obviously, it's a nod to the complicated spelling of a first name that is pronounced (JOES-tin-son), according to the team.
Garcia, a 22-year-old from Venezuela, isn't just on the map because of his nickname. He was recently promoted to Triple-A Worcester and has hit .417 (10-for-24) with two homers, five doubles and a 1.148 OPS in six games after batting .256 with three homers, 17 RBIs and a .748 OPS in 33 games at Double-A Portland. Garcia was in major league camp this year and is on Boston's 40-man roster after being selected in November. MassLive ranked him 10th overall in Boston's system before this season; SoxProspects now has him ranked 13th among Red Sox minor leaguers.
Garcia and his WooSox teammates begin a six-game series at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday.

Red Sox Locker Changes Deemed 'Strong Sign' That Roman Anthony Will Stay in MLB
Red Sox Locker Changes Deemed 'Strong Sign' That Roman Anthony Will Stay in MLB originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox are faced with a problem, albeit a good one to have. With so many talented outfielders on the roster, all of which being young players, there isn't enough room for all four. With the call-up of Roman Anthony, a lot of things change in Boston, and for the better. Advertisement After Anthony finally got the call to the big leagues, there was speculation over what the move would be when Wilyer Abreu, who went onto the injured list to make room for Anthony, returns. While there's been constant speculation, Rob Bradford of WEEI on Twitter/X made two posts which could spell good news for Anthony amid the eventual return of Abreu. According to Bradford, the Red Sox have moved Anthony's locker, moving him between Jarren Duran and Alex Bregman. In a follow-up post, Bradford pointed out how this could be good news for Anthony. "This," Bradford wrote. "And today's lineup are strong signs they will find other avenues for a roster spot once Abreu returns." Advertisement Bradford's insight is that with the Red Sox moving Anthony's locker in-between two stars like Duran and Bregman, his spot in the Majors is secure. That would in turn make the Red Sox have to decide on what other move they need to do once Abreu returns. Boston Red Sox right fielder Roman Anthony (48) runs onto the field before a game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Fluharty-Imagn Images There are a few options, including designating someone for assignment or sending down a struggling prospect like Kristian Campbell. But, whatever they decide, it's pointing towards someone other than Anthony getting moved once Abreu returns. While it's speculation, Bradford also points out the lineup for the game against the New York Yankees at Fenway. Duran, who normally is an everyday starter, is getting the day off. Anthony, Ceddane Rafaela, and Rob Refsnyder make up the outfielders for the Red Sox. Advertisement That configuration would likely be the same once Abreu returns, just with Abreu sliding into the spot that Refsnyder occupies. There would need to be reshuffling constantly, and the outfield would rarely be the same on a day-to-day basis, but it would keep all four outfielders on the roster at the same time. Most importantly, it would keep Anthony in the Major Leagues as the top prospect attempts to get his footing at the MLB level. While Anthony's locker move isn't exactly an admission of Anthony staying in the Majors, it is a sign that he might stay up once Abreu returns. Alex Cora Announces Red Sox Expect Wilyer Abreu to Return June 20th
Alex Cora Announces Red Sox Expect Wilyer Abreu to Return June 20th originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox placed outfielder Wilyer Abreu on the 10-day injured list in a move that coincided with the Red Sox calling up top prospect Roman Anthony. While the Red Sox fandom was excited for Anthony, there was some concern over Abreu's health. Advertisement Fortunately, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI, Alex Cora expects the Red Sox to get Abreu back into the fold for their series against the San Francisco Giants, which starts on Friday, June 20th. Abreu is on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain. This update from Cora is a huge one, as the impending return of Abreu will complicate things for the Red Sox. With a crowded outfield after Anthony's promotion, there will be a lot of moving parts in the next few weeks to determine how best to organize the lineup each day. Jarren Duran and Abreu are both being floated in trade rumors, Ceddane Rafaela seemingly has a spot secure, but there's no guarantee with the Red Sox outfield yet. Anthony meanwhile, is seemingly going to not get sent back down to the Minor Leagues. Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu (52) celebrates after he hits a home run sixth inning against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Osentoski-Imagn Images The outfield is going to become very complicated once Abreu returns, which is both a good problem and bad problem to have. It's bad for obviuos reasons, as one of the talented outfielders will become the odd-man-out. But, it's good because of how much talent the ReD Sox have in the outfield. Advertisement Abreu has been solid for the Red Sox in right field. He has a.245 batting average, and a .792 OPS in his 208 at-bats for the Red Sox in 2025. He's hit 13 home runs, and has 32 RBIs on the year. Getting a player like Abreu back into the fold would be a massive addition for almost every other team. While it's a positive move for the Red Sox, it comes with a lot of roster complications. But, at the end of the day, this update from Cora is a welcome one, as Abreu getting back healthy is a good thing no matter what. Whether it's to boost his trade value, or provide insurance in the outfield, Abreu's return is a great sign for Boston. Red Sox Announce Trade Sending Minor League Pitcher Brian Van Belle to Reds for Cash
Red Sox Announce Trade Sending Minor League Pitcher Brian Van Belle to Reds for Cash originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox are in the process of reshuffling their roster amid the call-ups of their top prospects. While the Red Sox are making these moves, ahead of their second game against the New York Yankees, they Red Sox made a trade. Advertisement The Red Sox announced on Twitter/X that they have made a trade with the Cincinnati Reds, sending Minor League pitcher Brian Van Belle to the Reds for cash considerations. While Van Belle hasn't been a factor for the Red Sox in the Major Leagues in 2025, he has been playing well down in Triple-A. But, the Red Sox designated him for assignment on June 10th, and the Reds swooped in ahead of waivers and sent cash to Boston for the 28-year-old pitcher. The right-hander has yet to make his MLB debut, but after a strong start to the 2025 season, he could make his debut with the Reds. At Triple-A Worcester, in eight starts and across 12 games, Van Belle had a 2.29 ERA and a 5-1 record. Across 51 innings pitched, Van Belle had an impressive 41 strikeouts to just seven walks. Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora (13) is shown in the dugout before the game against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Zanine-Imagn Images The damage, albeit limited, done to him came in the form of batters hitting .240 off his pitching. But even then, his WHIP of 1.06 was very solid, and rounded out a very strong start to the year for Van Belle. Advertisement Boston's decision to DFA the longtime Minor League pitcher is a questionable one, as he's been dominant in Triple-A for the WooSox. Fortunately, the Red Sox have a solid bullpen and a rotation that is steadily improving. The return of cash for Van Belle isn't a lot, but as the Red Sox had already designated him for assignment, any return is well worth it. The Reds acquired Van Belle for cash, as the Red Sox made a minor roster move ahead of their second game of their home series against the Yankees.
