‘Stories Don't Have to Be About Disability' to Feature Actors with a Disability: A Call for Change

'Over 70 million Americans and 1.3 billion globally have disabilities,' Nancy Weintraub said at the 'Reimagining Hollywood: A New Lens on Disability,' panel at the American Pavilion during the Cannes Film Festival. Weintraub is the Chief Advancement Officer at Easterseals Southern California. For over a century has been the leading disability support and advocacy organization in the U.S. Easterseals works heavily to increase opportunities for disabled performers in the film and TV industry, and Weintraub was joined by actor, writer, producer, and founder of the Easterseals Disability Film Challenge, Nic Novicki, for a lively conversation about the state of disability inclusion in entertainment — and the importance of authentic representation. The time is right for inclusive change. So Novicki founded the Easterseals Disability Film Challenge, 'an annual film competition where you make a one-to-five-minute film that has somebody with a disability involved in front of or behind the camera. The films don't have to be about disability, it's just about including people with disabilities.' The Challenge winners then receive coveted access to already established entertainment industry professionals as a prize. Earlier in the year at Sundance, Easterseals launched a new report on the subject of representing disability onscreen that Weintraub explained looks 'at how far we've come with disability inclusion, but also recognizes there are more opportunities to grow together. Over 50 talented individuals with disabilities helped curate it. We held a national survey in October of 800 adults with disabilities.' Novicki, who has been in over 40 television shows and films, revealed that the Film Challenge had resulted in 135 films being created this year from around the world. Easterseals' report from earlier this year featured an important point from Novicki: 'A lot of times, accessibility does not requiremore money, it requires more planning — strategically planning ahead and integrating accessibility from the very beginning.' Money need not be a barrier. Both Weintraub and Novicki love celebrating successes alongside their ongoing work to increase inclusion. 'There have been some amazing success stories recently,' Novicki said. ''Wicked'! Marissa Bode is a wheelchair user. The future is bright. 'Coda,' winning the Oscars, an all-deaf cast.' 'The buying power, the disposable income of the disability community in the United States is $490 billion, and that translates to over $1.3 trillion globally,' Weintraub said. 'Not only do we have a critical mass of people who want to see themselves represented, but they're a large part of the market. Authentic disability representation has financial incentives.' The report showed the audience wants more representation, and wants networks and studios to fix the lack of representation. 'I wondered why more people with disabilities weren't creating their own content. I wanted to play a gangster. So, I started shooting it myself,' Novicki said. 'I started creating my own opportunities. I created the Disability Film Challenge and it started small. We had 5 films that first year. I partnered with Easterseals in 2017. Now we have had 850 films created from around the world over the last 12 years. These become working databases. The Casting Society of America shares these films. With the challenge, it's not talking about the problem of the lack of representation, it's about being part of the solution.' 'Amazon MGM Studios is a partner of the challenge,' Novicki said. 'They reached out to us looking for an actor on the autism spectrum. We were able to send dozens of talented actors from the challenge. Nic Sanchez ended up booking a role in that film, which was 'The Accountant' sequel, and worked with Ben Affleck. It's a challenging landscape, but I'm optimistic because it's a global population of people with disabilities that hasn't been tapped into.' 'Stories don't have to be about disability,' Weintraub noted. 'A lot of the stories that come out of the challenge are seeing people with disabilities being moms, dads, lawyers, doctors, gangsters, bad guys, and being in romantic relationships too. The studios can see them in roles outside of roles that are just about their disability.' 'People with disabilities have largely not been given the same amount of auditions and opportunities,' Novicki said. Weintraub added, 'There are a lot of background crowd shots in movies. Always consider putting people with disabilities in those. Again, it's one in four, so they should be represented everywhere as well.' 'When you talk about one in four of the population,' Novicki continued, 'You're also talking about your neighbor, your son, your father, your uncle. Everybody has their own connection to disability. It's just about how do you meet them? That happens here (at Cannes). This is the largest film market in the world.' 'The disability community wants to see themselves represented. There's so much pride in our community,' Novicki said. 'I'm proud to have a disability, to be a little person, to be a part of this community. With 1.7 billion, there's a lot more room for awareness. There are a lot of success stories. We have a lot of our own within the challenge, but there's still room to grow.' Jacinda Ardern Documentary ‘Prime Minister' Shows Us How the New Zealand Leader Is the Anti-Trump

On June 10 at a packed auditorium in Marina Del Rey, California, the former New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern (2017-2023) comforted a room full of anxious Americans by showing them what empathetic leadership looks like. She was answering questions from Rachel Bloom at Live Talks Los Angeles about her new memoir 'A Different Kind of Power.' She is also the subject of the Sundance World Cinema audience-award-winning documentary 'Prime Minister' (CNN/HBO), which Magnolia opens in theaters June 13. 'Over the course of my time in office,' Ardern told the rapt audience, 'we had a domestic terror attack that took the lives of 51 members of our Muslim community. We had a pandemic, we had a volcanic eruption, we had a series of natural disasters. I saw and experienced a lot of difficult moments, and in all of them, I can give you examples of incredible kindness and humanity and generosity. I still fundamentally believe [that is] our natural inclination. We currently have a disconnect where that is not what is on display by political leadership. Because instead, politics has decided that blame and the weaponization of fear is a better response to the difficult period we're in, than the much more challenging response in politics, which is to actually solve the problems that people are facing.' She reluctantly ran for Prime Minister in 2017 after the Labour candidate dipped in the polls, and her party eventually, after intense negotiations with smaller parties, squeaked to a win. Three days before the results were announced, Ardern found out that she was pregnant. She took office in October 2017 at age 37, the youngest in New Zealand's history, the youngest country leader at that time in the world, and the third woman to serve as New Zealand Prime Minister. In due time, she gave birth to a daughter, only the second elected world leader to do so (after Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto). From the start, Ardern made it clear that her partner, Clark Gayford, would be the primary caregiver for their child. A former TV anchorman, Gayford was not only used to being in the spotlight but knew how to wield a video camera. He filmed their life behind the scenes from 2017 through her decision to step down five years later, after her popularity waned. 'The only thing that I ever found overrode self-doubt was my grinding sense of responsibility,' said Ardern. 'I knew that I had to answer the call. And so from then on, I just had to get on with it. So that was what did it.' That intimate footage was key to assembling 'Prime Minister,' which could have become a local production. But when producer Gigi Pritzker came on board, she brought in ace editor Lindsay Utz (Oscar-winner 'American Factory,' 'Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry,' 'Martha') to make a film with global appeal that was bigger than a New Zealand political story. Making her feature debut, Utz co-directed with New Zealand's Michelle Walsh. The film was seven years in the making. 'Everybody that was working on it in New Zealand recognized that it was a powerful moment in time and it should be documented,' Utz told me. 'But there was never any plan until Jacinda resigned and came to the States.' When the New Zealand team came to America to finance the movie, American financier Pritzker showed Utz some video. 'I only had to look at about two minutes to know that I wanted to take on the project,' said Utz. 'At the time, I looked at the breastfeeding footage. I had just had my second baby, and I was struggling with similar issues, common issues that women struggle with. And so this film became two countries and two teams coming together.' The Rt. Honorable Dame Ardern now serves as a fellow at Harvard University. When Utz got started, Ardern had moved to the East Coast, so the director was able to meet and bond with her in Boston. She and Walsh interviewed Ardern together and also got access to New Zealand's oral history project and 40 hours of audio diaries that had been recorded when Ardern was in office. 'That's a gift right from the documentary heavens,' said Utz, whose editorial background was an asset as the film melded together archive and fresh interviews. The first rough cut assemblage ran 17 hours. The editing team took a year to wrestle the movie down to one hour and 42 minutes. The directors wanted Ardern's voice 'to be at the center of the film,' said Utz, 'almost as if you're sitting next to her and she's telling you a story. The approach was using the audio diaries as a portal into the past and then doing these incredibly intimate interviews with her. And we were lucky, because she was writing her memoir at the time, so she was in this contemplative space. And you can see that in the interviews, they're pretty raw. She's pretty raw. She's still processing what she's just been through. We wanted it to feel like reflection, and intimate, but we were always aware that we wanted the past to be propulsive and move forward in a verité way. So we had to balance the past and the present.' Front and center was Ardern's model of a different kind of governing. 'She showed up unapologetically as herself,' said Utz. 'And that's what people take note of. They feel the authenticity, and they feel the conviction. And she demonstrates that you can be both empathetic and strong, that you can be kind and have resolve. It was important to us to show the portrait of the leader that we saw.' Remarkably, Ardern gave the filmmakers leeway. 'She did not have control,' said Utz. 'She was a good subject. You can imagine it's hard for Clark, because he shot a lot of this footage, to let go. We were given space to work and figure out how to craft this movie, and she didn't see it cut until after we submitted to Sundance.' The filmmakers screened 'Prime Minister' for Ardern in New York. 'Michelle and I were sitting in the room squeezing each other, sitting a few aisles behind her,' said Utz. 'She's watching it for the first time, and that's always a nerve-wracking experience. A lot of it is hard for her to watch, but because she is such a lover of history and documentation, she understood that even the stuff that she is embarrassed by is all part of the story. And she gave us great freedom to do what we thought was right.' As you watch the documentary, it's striking how different New Zealand is from the United States, where it's hard to imagine many of the accomplishments of Ardern's administration even being possible, from shutting down the entire country during COVID, saving 20,000 people's lives, to ordering her citizens to turn in their arms. After the Christchurch mosque shootings in March 2019, the government implemented strict gun control reforms. Within weeks, Parliament passed a ban on military-style semi-automatic weapons, nearly unanimously. The months-long government buyback program, by the end of 2019, collected over 56,000 banned firearms and almost 200,000 illegal gun parts. 'It's surreal to watch this,' said Utz, 'because it feels like another planet.' The parliamentary system in New Zealand also favors the election of women in Parliament. Still, Ardern is something of a unicorn in today's tumultuous right-leaning times. 'You see the political will behind the scenes,' said Utz. 'And you see the passion, and you feel her commitment to these issues. We didn't want to make a film that was dissecting all of her policies. We wanted this to be an intimate, personal journey of a woman on the world stage, facing all sorts of things that women face: the balance of work and motherhood, what it looks like to have a supportive partner. This was a family story, too. You were invested in them as a family, because they were a unit, that's how she functioned, that's how she did her job.' Another aspect of the Ardern story: New Zealand has always been a progressive country. But that did not protect her when the wolves began to circle. Her popularity soared and then fell after months of organized protests. 'Russian cells were pumping disinformation into New Zealand,' said Utz. 'The New Zealand public was interacting with that disinformation at a much higher rate than other countries at that time. There was the anti-vaccine sentiment, of course, that we saw in lots of places in the world, that became a powerful force. And Quanon and our American politics were being looked at and studied and admired.' When the economy tanked after COVID, Ardern was under tremendous pressure, and decided to resign before the end of her term. 'A lot of people have anger towards her, still to this day, about her policies,' said Utz, '[saying] they were too draconian, too strict, put too much emphasis on life and not enough on the economy, although [Ardern's government] did do a lot to support families and people during the pandemic. You could find people on both sides of that issue.' As the movie hits theaters, Utz is 'secretly thrilled that we got a film about a progressive politician into theaters nationwide,' she said. 'It feels like something unique right now. People are desperate for some light and some inspiration. And she's good at that.' Where Ardern goes, applause follows. 'We could not move anywhere in Park City without being stopped by somebody in the streets,' said Utz. 'Since then, it's been playing at festivals, and we're getting the same reaction everywhere. There's palpable emotion in the room. We opened Sundance Mexico City last week. It's hitting a nerve, it's touching something inside.' At her Live Talks Los Angeles event, Ardern held the audience in her hand. She knows where the laughs and groans are and that she represents the polar opposite of Donald Trump. She's everything that our current administration is not. And she offers hope for what an alternative could look like. She told a story about the early days of her experience in Parliament. After a particularly grueling round of debate one day, Ardern went to one of the tougher politicians and asked how she should toughen up. He said: 'Just a minute, don't toughen up. If you toughen up, you will lose your empathy, and that is what's going to make you good at your job.' That was the moment, Ardern said, 'that I decided that actually thin-skin sensitivity, it's all empathy. And he was right, if I lost it, I lost something else. So that was just going to have to be the price I was going to pay. Politics was going to feel hard, but maybe it was meant to feel hard.' From there, Ardern learned to ignore comments, to filter, to avoid reviews. 'I would decide when I engaged on social media and when I didn't,' said Ardern. 'And when I was Prime Minister, I knew the media, and it was a saving grace, because it meant I dealt with the issue of the day, not the commentary on the issue of the day, and it meant that I was always facing forward, rather than trying to correct something that had happened in the past.' She also took control of her schedule. 'I was in a role where it was assumed that you couldn't,' said Ardern. And she focused on finding quality time for her child. 'The thing I found the hardest was I might be physically there, but I wasn't always mentally there. And so if I'm going to be home for that time, I need to make bath time count. I thought about the memories I wanted to have of that time, and I didn't want her to see a stressed mom.' At the end of 'Prime Minister,' Ardern and Gaylord get married. 'It's always a good thing,' said Utz. 'Can you have a wedding? Use it.' 'Prime Minister' opens from Magnolia Pictures on Friday, June 13. A Celebrated French Restaurant Adapts to Tough Times in Hollywood

Mr. T opened in Hollywood in September 2022 to high anticipation thanks to its reputation as a chic Parisian bistro from restaurateur Guillaume Guedj (previously of the two-Michelin-starred Passage 53). Opening chef Alisha Vannah came from République, another celebrated Los Angeles French-inflected restaurant. Everything seemed set for Mr. T to succeed on the then-bustling Sycamore Avenue in Hollywood on the ground floor of a new office building until a series of setbacks in the past year-plus led Guedj to seriously evaluate its approach. The restaurant's opening menu featured Angeleno-oriented takes on classic bistro fare, like chicken pot pie with tare chicken jus, tuna crudo, roast lamb kebabs, and Koshihikari rice topped with sea urchin créme. Early on, Time Out LA awarded Mr. T with a solid four-star review, and praised its inventiveness, editor Patricia Kelly Yeo noting that 'every dish delivers with just the right amount of flair.' In mid-2024, Guedj brought on talented pastry chef Francois Daubinet to helm a daytime pastry program and the restaurant's evening desserts. Later that year, Mr. T was added to the Los Angeles Times' 101 Best Restaurants at number 87, where columnist Jenn Harris wrote, 'Vannah's cooking is a quiet luxury, demure but powerful in its intention and flavors.' Harris also commended Daubinet's desserts, especially the 'impossibly smooth' chocolate mousse. Though everything seemed fine on the outside, Guedj tells Eater that sales had slowed for the restaurant due to numerous issues. Its location demanded a steady flow of customers from offices, including Jay-Z's Roc Nation, which occupies space above Mr. T, but the reduction in mandatory office hours and the impact of the 2023 writers' and actors' strikes hampered business for the restaurant. Then, at the top of this year, the Palisades and Eaton fires happened. Eater spoke with Guedj about the effects of the 2023 strikes and the January 2025 wildfires, and discussed the changes he's made with Vannah to make the menu this year more approachable for an LA dining scene that still today remains in flux. On the word changes for the menu: After the fires and amid difficult economic times, we wanted to serve more of what people want and need, to go back to the basics that we love. Mr T. opened with a modern French menu, and the idea is still the same, but we adjusted the menu to lean more on warmer, classic recipes. We have poulet roti, roasted chicken, with a proper jus. You might want a good steak frites with a thick, flavorful peppercorn sauce, or our twist of the famous beef Bourguignon. You get a classic Caesar salad with perfect seasoning. Apple pie with roasted apples. We're still modern French, but as a French guy, I feel like this is what people need right now. We wanted to adjust to Angelenos with a more straightforward menu than what we do in Paris. When we opened, it was France meets U.S., but when the new French guy came to town, we adjusted and found the right balance. April was tough with Coachella, but May was a little better. It's still very mellow and slow. We were on so many lists, like Time Out and Eater. Until June 2023, we were really good, busy all the time. Then the strikes hit, and that's when things started to slow down. The strikes really affected the business because we're in Hollywood. Last summer, we were added to the Los Angeles Times 101 Best Restaurants, and we were super proud to be at the event showcasing our food with 40 other restaurants. That was a huge push and amazing exposure, so that December was great, but then the fires hit. We ended up only having that high for a month. 'People don't want to be overwhelmed during these times.' — Guillaume guedj, owner, Mr. t On making the menu less French and more French American: We realized that we had to communicate that we were more approachable to our regulars. We have French dishes like roast chicken, steak frites, branzino with beurre blanc. It's more French American, and it's a good mix. French people come and they love it, and American people can understand it. People don't want to be overwhelmed during these times. They want to come eat, and have something simple; they want to know what they're going to get. I think that really helped us attract regular customers after the fire. On Vannah's development as a chef in the past two-and-a-half years: It was challenging to adapt to the concept of Mr. T from Republique. We were doing things like roasted cauliflower with hummus or fancy tacos. It's all very creative, and that's what made Mr. T famous in France, but it was a challenge for her. I think she took it and did great, incorporating her Thai background and adding Asian twists. I was challenging us to do better and be more creative. But I think there was a disconnect. When customers come here, they want French food. It was confusing for some people. We had to make things more approachable, still with a nice presentation and good cooking technique. So now the fusion is more French American, with a burger, macaroni and cheese. It's more what people want, and Alisa had to adjust. There's more focus on the sauce, cooking, and finding products — and less on creativity, if I can say that. On getting creative even within the context of bistro classics: When you want to do a steak, typically you'll put seasonal root vegetables on the side or put a sauce with a little twist. Now we're thinking, let's just do a good old-school French peppercorn sauce. We have really good French fries and a good New York steak. It's just a tasty plate of steak frites, and it's one of our most popular dishes on the menu. We worked hard on the jus for the roast chicken to make it clearer and lighter. It's also one of our main dishes. Caesar salad is everywhere in France now, so we used endive to make it more Frenchy. We stack the endives for a beautiful and modern presentation. It's a taste that we all know, but we elevated it. On dealing with the daytime business in Hollywood: With Francois, we had a strong start; people were coming from Santa Monica and Silver Lake to try the pastries. But we don't have a lot of people in the neighborhood who want to enjoy a good croissant on a daily basis. We're actually selling more coffee and breakfast burritos, so we had this problem on weekdays of throwing stuff away. We stopped the pastries and just kept them for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. People are waiting now and coming for coffee and pastries. It's funny because people are choosing cookies over croissants — they seem to have almost the same calories. On changing from a destination to a neighborhood favorite: I'm hoping that the area and the overall economy will get better. The whole world is suffering, Los Angeles is suffering, and Hollywood even more. I believe if you keep building it and keep it consistent, and make adjustments, you can make it through the storm. We need to stay alive during difficult times, and hopefully, it gets better. The thing that saves Mr. T is the regulars. They love this place and the team. The food is good quality — it's not Michelin star, but we use farm-to-table products and it's tasty for what you get. With music and ambience, you can have a good dinner. Initially, we were getting people coming from Santa Monica and the Westside to have an experience, but we didn't have that many regulars. Now with the new menu, we have items that get people coming every weekend or every two weeks. I feel like if we keep building with our fans, we should be fine.
