
Managing grass quality to pump over 2kg/MS/cow/day in Tipperary
The importance of keeping on top of grass with changing weather cannot be overstated, according to dairy farmer, Mark Lonergan from Rosegreen, Cashel, Co. Tipperary.
Lonergan shared how he manages grass quality to drive performance during a Teagasc/Dairygold farm walk today (Thursday, May 29).
He discussed all aspects of herd performance, breeding progress and grassland management, but stressed the importance of keeping on top of grass in changing weather patterns.
Teagasc dairy advisor, Darragh Kelly, also discussed farm performance with Lonergan who highlighted his new 'comfort' from milking 107 cows instead of a previous 128.
According to Lonergan, this has allowed him to get a full three grazing in most of his paddocks, which has increased intakes and has allowed for better cow performance.
During the farm walk today, participants heard that the milking platform is stocked at 3.5 cows/ha, which gives him more breathing space when growth rates slow down throughout the summer months.
Lonergan also said that he had to reduce his whole farm stocking rate from 2.8 cows/ha down to 2.27 cows/ha due to pressures on fodder.
' I was buying in silage and never had enough silage, and it's hard to grow more than 13t dry matter (DM)/ha,' he said.
Grass quality
Teagasc dairy specialist, Stuart Childs, also went through the current grass performance on the farm, which is driving the solids production.
Lonergan carried out a grass walk last week where he noted that growth rate was 55kg/DM/day but, when he went walking the farm again just a number of days later, growth had shot up to 85kg DM/ha.
Overall, much-needed rain in the last week to 10 days on the farm is beginning to kick on grass growth.
Currently, the average farm cover (AFC) on the farm is 730kg DM/ha with a 210 kg DM/cow as he has stocked at 3.5 cows/ha now that the silage ground is closed off on the farm, which means demand is up at 65kg DM/day.
Mark walks the farm every 4-5 days because previously he got caught during one rotation where he did not walk the farm for seven days, and an 8ac paddock should have been taken out.
'It messed up the rotation, the situation can change very quick,' he shared.
Lonergan now aims to keep cover/cow over 170-180kg DM/cow and reckons that growth will be averaging around 70kg DM/day for the next two weeks.
'I've one paddock earmarked to take out in the next few days for bales to stay ahead of quality,' he added
Mark's cows grazing quality, lush covers today
Cows are performing well due to Lonergan 's persistence in keeping quality ahead of the cows as they are yielding 26L/cow/day with 3.7% protein and 4.3% milk fat, equating to 2.14 kg/MS/day.
This production is supported by an 18kg of grass DM allocation per cow and 2kg of a 11% crude protein (CP) nut per cow/day, as he feels there is enough protein in the diet coming from grass which allows him to drop the CP of the dairy nut.
He highlighted that he was feeding a 16% nut earlier in the year and the cows were eating up to 4kg/day until the burst of growth at the end of April.
Lonergan also pre-mowed about 80% of the last rotation in order to keep ahead of grass quality but to also keep grass in the system as growth rates took a hit due to low moisture in the soil and he did not want to run short by taking out paddocks for bales.
He said: 'If I didn't pre mow those paddocks, the cows would have left 20% of the grass in the paddocks'.
The farmer also acknowledged that protein did take a hit as the cows were grazing more stem, but said that it would also have taken a hit if he had to feed silage.

On June 8, coastal communities across the globe are observing World Oceans Day organised by the United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS). The annual event has been running since 2009 and serves as a reminder of the critical importance of protecting our oceans and marine life. This year, for the first time World Oceans Day will run in conjunction with the UN Ocean Conference which will be held in Nice, France, from June 9 to 13. It is hoped that holding the two events consecutively will help to amplify the visibility of the many initiatives and local programmes being undertaken to improve the health of our oceans around the world. The theme of World Oceans Day this year is 'Wonder: Sustaining what sustains us.' According to DOALOS the marine environment faces increasingly daunting challenges and the act of wondering 'serves to remind us that we are part of something bigger'. With World Oceans Day, the aim is to 'celebrate the ocean's essential wonder and call on decision makers not to lose sight of the ocean's wonder when determining its fate'. Clean Coasts Established by An Taisce in 2003 the Clean Coasts programme is one of Ireland's most visible community initiatives aimed at improving the marine environment. The Clean Coasts programme works with communities to help protect and care for Ireland's waterways, coastline, seas, ocean and marine life. Currently there are 2,500 active groups around Ireland with 45,000 volunteers taking part. The aim of the Clean Coasts programme is to encourage tangible improvements to Ireland's coastal environment through community-led actions such as beach clean-ups, litter surveys and a wide range of other environmentally focused activities. Since 2003 the programme has continually grown and now includes variety of initiatives including the Green Coast Award, Love Your Coast photography competition, the Clean Coasts Roadshow, Clean Coasts grants scheme, corporate volunteering, the Ocean Hero Award, the Big Beach Clean and awareness campaigns such as 'think before you flush' and the #2MinuteBeachClean. Last year, the Big Beach Clean held on the third weekend of September saw 15,000 volunteers remove 95 tonnes of litter from Irish coastal areas in one weekend. The volunteers: Mark McCarthy The son of a West Cork lighthouse keeper, the sea is in Mark McCarthy's blood. For his day job Mark runs marine training courses from his base in Schull where he is also a senior member of the local coastguard unit. Mark has been a long-time supporter of the Clean Coasts programme and was the recipient of the Ocean Hero Award in 2024 for his efforts in integrating environmental awareness into his training courses. He has been actively cleaning marine waste from local beaches and coastal areas for many years and has tried to use social media to encourage others to do likewise. 'It goes back a long time now to the pre social media days,' he says adding: 'I have found that social media is a very powerful space to be able to share, it gives people a bit of an awareness for the world around us and I also integrate beach cleaning now into my courses as well.' Awareness in West Cork has grown over recent years as the more popular beaches have improved significantly but remoter areas can still suffer from significant amounts of rubbish, according to Mark. He said: 'The more remote islands here in West Cork tend not to have a lot of people on them, so they tend to have a lot of stuff that people haven't picked up. I find that the beaches that are popular are usually the cleanest because a lot of people have the same mindset. 'They'll take a bit of the plastic away with them, they're getting better all the time. Unfortunately, it's the places that are inaccessible that need the most work and most tidying up.' Picture: Mark McCarthy Mark has been actively involved in beach cleaning for at least 20 years and over that time not much has changed in terms of the amount of marine plastic he sees washed up on the West Cork coast. 'There is a lot of polypropylene that floats. That's the plastic we can see but there's plenty of other plastic that doesn't float and there's no chance we'll ever get get our hands on that.' Being on Ireland's Atlantic coast, Mark says he finds items that wash up from all over the world: 'The other day I picked up a bottle of bleach from Taiwan. I have lobster tags that come from Maine on the east coast of the US. I've found shotgun cartridges that come all the way from Nova Scotia. "It's amazing that these small pieces of plastic travel halfway around the world and make their way to our coastline.' According to Mark, the evidence of the impact of marine waste on animal life is impossible to ignore: 'We see evidence all the time of how it affects animals and biodiversity. I find pieces of polystyrene and insulation foam; you find little blocks of it on the shoreline and you can tell that it's been nibbled away by fish, they are eating it.' Mark says that despite the seemingly never-ending tide of marine plastic he remains hopeful about the future. 'I'll always remain optimistic, there's no point in any other attitude really. I'm known in the area as the guy with the blue bags, so people just knock on the door and say, 'hey got any more of those bags?' Mark says he finds items that wash up from all over the world: 'The other day I picked up a bottle of bleach from Taiwan.' Picture: Mark McCarthy 'I try to encourage people to adopt their favourite beach and anytime they're down on that beach, to try and make it a little bit better, just take a little bit of stuff away.' Mark says that Cork County council have also been very supportive of the Clean Coasts group in Schull. 'It's definitely worth noting the help we have had from Cork County Council. They have been really supportive of everything I've done. I could come off a beach with 10 or 15 bags of rubbish and I just need to tell one of the local council workers and that stuff is collected straight away. I don't have to spend money or look for funding to bring it to the local recycling centre and they support me with all of the bags and stuff like that as well which is great.' 'Every single person can make a difference. It's through lots of people doing small bits at there local beaches that we can really see things start to change,' Mark said. Proinsias Ó Tuama Inspired by the students he teaches at St. Colmans Community College in Midleton, Clean Coasts volunteer Proinsias Ó Tuama believes that the future of our coastal environment depends on engaging young people as much as possible. Proinsias was the driving force behind the establishment of the Clean Coasts group in Ballynamona back 2015. He said: 'I was down on the beach with some students and we saw one of those children's hobbyhorses washed up there. This one was a bit different to ones I had seen though. It was like a lightbulb moment because this one was in the shape of an elephant. It was an unusual sight and the idea really came from there.' He said: 'That first year we started a community group with myself and a family just up the road and by the end of the year there were 20 of us and we had removed over 12 tonnes of rubbish from Ballynamona Beach. The beach is 1.2 kms long and and I started thinking if we were able to collect that much rubbish from one beach is every kilometre of the coast just as bad?' From there the Ballynamona group has seen the area it covers and the number of volunteers steadily increase. Today, the group has 300 local volunteers and looks after 3% of the Irish coastline as well as managing 34 acres of land for biodiversity purposes. Proinsias says that the group has evolved into a large and friendly volunteer organisation but it could not operate without sponsorship. He said: 'We engage with hundreds of school children. Marine education, coastal biodiversity, workshops, beach cleans. In this area coastal flooding is a major issue. We try to open their eyes, to get them off their phones for a while and get them out to the coast. "You hope that maybe you can awaken their their spirit to something else that's going on around them. We include climate change and climate adaptation workshops too. 'We are supported by the Health Services Staff's Credit Union (HSSCU) and we really couldn't do it without them. We wouldn't be able to do it without that support because it's so costly to get kids down to the coast and there are no budgets in school for things like this.' Ella Rose Richards, a pupil of Ballycroneen National School in Co. Cork and her older sister Lorna Richards, a student at St Colman's College in Midelton at the Blue Flag Marine Education Day on Garryvoe beach last May. Proinsias says that awareness of the impact of marine plastic on the wider environment and human health is crucial to empower future generations. 'We have to try to prepare them,' he says. 'Ultimately it's about how we consume things and plastic is a major part of that. It takes 450 years for a plastic bottle to break down but that's actually only to break it into microplastics, then it's broken into nanoplastics but it's still there. "Plastic has crossed the blood / brain barrier and we still don't know what the long-term effects of that are in terms of things like Alzheimer's or dementia.' Workshops also try to make children think about how products and produce are packaged: 'If they need to buy an orange what do they buy? Do you buy them in a plastic net? Do you buy an orange that's peeled and segmented in a plastic container ready for consumption? Do you buy an orange and peel it?' Jack Murphy, a 6th class pupil from Cloyne National School in Co Cork at the Blue Flag Marine Education Day on Garryvoe beach last May. According to Proinsias people do not always appreciate just how long our waste materials can remain as pollutants in the ocean. 'I have a Lux detergent bottle that I found in 2017 and the price on it is in Nouveau Francs. That was the currency in France between 1958 and 1963. Two years ago one of the kids from a local primary school found a bottle that was 120 or 130 years old, it's phenomenal.' He added: 'We've moved on from where we were say 10 years ago. We don't have the amazing photographs of the big mountains of rubbish anymore. We are keeping on top of it but we are just a small piece of the jigsaw in Ireland. "We are doing okay but we need the decision makers who enact laws and provide resources to do more. Are we in a good place? Not really. Have we improved the situation? Absolutely. Were we far worse off? Yes we were but there is so much more to do.' Gráinne Furey Gráinne Furey is a community development worker with the Youghal Blue & Green Community Network in East Cork. Established in 2021 the network aims to empower local people to make positive changes in their community addressing the four key pillars of environment, biodiversity, coast & marine and energy. Gráinne said: 'It's about community development and making sure people weren't being left behind. The basic idea is that we all go forward together in a just transition when we're looking at climate change. "Our remit is to bring wider awareness, to do it in a way that we're not preaching to people. We are trying to listen to our community.' The network helps people to educate themselves around environmental issues through various conservation projects, community workshops, talks and community events. She added: 'Because we are a coastal community, obviously the coastal environment is very important. Flooding is a serious issue and will continue to be. Coastal erosion impacts us, pollution. Awareness in West Cork has grown over recent years as the more popular beaches have improved significantly but remoter areas can still suffer from significant amounts of rubbish, according to Mark. Picture: Mark McCarthy "We try to bring that awareness to people about how important what you put down your sink and your toilet at home is. What you're putting in the bin, everything that goes into into landfill can end up in the sea. 'We try to combine those issues in fun and creative ways as well. Last year we did a sand castle challenge where we had sand artists doing a map of Youghal on the beach and we chatted to people about climate change and flooding. "There are 477 buildings in Youghal at risk of flooding in future and most of those 200 people on the beach were not aware of that.' Gráinne says she was a member of the local Clean Coasts group herself before she took on the role within the network. Empowering local communities is the key to driving successful change. 'That's why we're a network. It's about getting people to talk to each other, because quite often, the club up the road and the man down the road are coming from the same place. They want to do the same thing, but they don't know it.'

Pre-mowing: The preferred option on a lot of farms this year
Over the last number of weeks, dry weather with plenty of heat in the ground saw a lot of seed go to head quite early, and pre-mowing became a popular measure to correct grass quality. Pre-mowing is often considered an expensive way of correcting grass quality, as you are burning fuel and possibly impacting on milk protein content of the milk. However, when grass gets out of your control – which is sometimes inevitable even if you are on the ball when it comes to grassland management – it can be hard to justify taking out every paddock for bales. The idea of pre-mowing is that you keep the grass in the rotation, encourage the cows to eat all the stem, and maintain optimal residuals to correct the quality for the following rotation. Many reports from across the country and particularly down the south was that there were plenty of farmer pre-mowing paddocks in the last rotation and – with the rain received in the last 10 days – this decision seemed to work favourably. Reports from farmers indicate that while your milk protein content gets knocked back a small bit, the option to pre-mow rather than take out bales is often a preferred option when grass growth is finding it difficult to keep up. When farmers are only above the 160kg of dry matter (DM)/livestock unit (LU) and there is little signs of strong grass growth to come, yet one or two paddocks are too strong and are beginning to stem, pre-mowing can be a great option. Topping is another option, but the difference between topping and pre-mowing is that topping will lead to grass wastage whereas with pre-mowing, cows are eating the majority of the paddock. Pre-mowing seems to be more fashionable over the last number of weeks as – due to low moisture in the soil prior to the arrival of rain – the grass plant was under a bit of stress and the seed was beginning to head a bit earlier than usual which is hard to naturally control through grazing. However, with rain in recent days, there may be less farmers pre-mowing and any surpluses should try to be taken out through surplus bales. Pre-mowing The important thing at this time of the year is to maintain pre-grazing yields of 1,400kg DM/ha, and a grazing rotation of about 21-22 days is advised to achieve this when growth rates are about 65-70kg DM/ha/day. Pre-mowing is where the grass in the paddock is mowed and then cows are allowed in to graze the mowed grass. This technique can be used on paddocks that have gone too strong or that have a large amount of stem present, although I rather it not used in this vein as you are taking away the cow's freedom of choice. Pre-mowing should be used in the same way as topping, to correct grass quality and reduce the amount of stem but shouldn't be an excuse to let covers get out of hand. This method is an expensive way of managing and correcting grass and it also takes away the cows' choice of what grass they eat. Cows are selective grazers, meaning they will choose to eat the lush, high-quality grass over the stemmy, low-quality grass. Taking away a cow's freedom of choice will more than likely hinder their milk production, and in particular the protein content of the milk. Farmers need to be careful that they don't pre-mow too many paddocks in the rotation, so milk solids don't take a huge hit, but aiming for one or two in the rotation should not affect solids production too much as the cows' intake will be increased. However, it is better than leaving cows into high covers where they will potentially leave 20% of the grass, leading to poor residuals and subsequent growth recoveries. Pre-mowing can also increase production, providing there is not an overload of stem in the paddock, as it will increase intakes as the grass is readily available to the cow. This method works well if paddocks have gone too strong and you are looking to ensure that grass doesn't run out while correcting quality and ensuring god residuals are achieved. However, if grass is plentiful on the farm and there is no fear of running out, mowing and baling the paddock is the ideal option.

Grass quality, reseed progress and finishing up AI in Co. Cork
At a recent Teagasc/Dairygold farm walk in Co. Cork, dairy farmer Tim Leader highlighted how he has been staying ahead of grass quality and how he felt his breeding season has gone to date. Tim Leader is milking 157 cows this year alongside his wife Mary, daughter Aoife and two sons, John and Paddy, who are all heavily involved on the farm. Cows are performing well at the moment, producing 28L/cow/day with 3.55% protein and 3.99% fat which equates to 2.16kg milk solids (MS)/cow/day while allocating 15kg of grass dry matter (DM)/cow and 4kg of meal/cow of a 14% crude protein nut. The Leaders' are farming an 87ha farm, which includes ground for silage and out-blocks. The milking platform consists of 52ha, which means the whole farm is stocked at 2.3 livestock unit (LU)/ha and the milking platform 3.1 LU/ha. Leader discussing current performance on the farm at the farm walk This leaves the farm with an organic stocking rate of 194kg of organic nitrogen (N)/ha, which is leaving the farm comfortable in terms of stocking rate limits and facilities, and matches the grass growing ability of the farm. Grass quality Leader is a big believer in having cows going into lush, quality covers to drive on milk production during the mid-season. He has carried out plenty of corrective action on paddocks so far this year. The current average farm cover on the farm is 568kg DM/ha, which is 178kg DM/LU. This is currently leaving a slight dip in his grass wedge, but Leader is not overly worried as growth has been slow up to now. He is hoping a bit more moisture in the ground will level his grass wedge out, as he aims to go into pre-grazing covers of 1,300kg DM/ha. With grass growth currently at 54kg DM/ha/day, he is currently running a 23 day rotation to keep quality grass in the diet. Teagasc/Dairygold Joint Programme adviser, Nora O'Donovan highlighted that grass towards the start of May came under a bit of pressure with the dry spell, which left paddocks heading out and going to stem earlier than usual. This strain on grass after a spell of quality growth meant that Leader was taking out a paddock for bales every week, as five paddocks altogether were cut and baled, achieving around three bales/ac on each paddock. A paddock with a cover of about 1,500kg DM/ha that was cut for bales about 23 days ago However, this corrective action was reduced about a fortnight ago, when grass growth slowed down completely and Leader turned to correcting quality through pre-mowing. He highlighted that he prefers pre-mowing to topping, as he feels that he is not losing out on regrowths and that the paddock recovery is quicker. Leader did warn however that he does not pre-mow paddocks to make cows eat high covers with a lot of stem but rather uses this method in the same vein as topping, to correct quality prior to cows grazing. He mentioned that any paddocks that have not been pre-mowed or cut for bales will be targeted in the next round for some sort of corrective action, preferably cut for bales when grass growth improves. The stocking rate on the milking platform has dropped as a bit of silage ground is back in the rotation and calves are moved off farm which Leader believes will allow him to correct quality through cutting surpluses for bales in the next rotation. Clover and reseed The farm has a clover incorporation of about 22% and the Leaders are reseeding year-on-year, with about 1.5-2kg of clover in each mix. The Co. Cork farmer is constantly learning how to manage the clover swards. He said a certain paddock had a lovely clover content last year but it was left with a heavy cover over the winter and then grazed in poor conditions, which impacted the clover content severely. He aims to leave high clover content paddocks with light covers over the winter by grazing them late in autumn and to graze them in good conditions from now on. Clover inclusion on a fresh reseed Leader also said that he will spread chemical N as usual on these paddocks in the spring and start decreasing N applications from May onwards. 'That's the ideal,' he added. He reseeded a paddock this year on April 11 , which is now only a few days away off its first grazing, currently with a cover of about 650kg DM/ha. The field was sprayed off on April 1 , then ploughed and power harrowed before farmyard manure was spread on it. The paddock was then sown on April 11 and received 2.5 bags/ac of 10-10-20 and lime. It was then sprayed with a post-emergence spray of ProClova, which has proved successful at killing off the docks though a few thistles persist in the sward. A look at the freshly reseeded paddock At the farm walk, Teagasc dairy specialist, Stuart Childs highlighted that there are no products on the market that are effective at killing thistles without killing the clover plant, and said that grazing it down to let the sward tiller should suffocate out the thistle. Leader hopes to get cows into the field over the next few days. He was advised to just give the grass a pull test beforehand so the whole plant is not pulled during grazing. He intends to top it up with 20 units of N after grazing. Breeding The Leaders are five weeks into the breeding season now, and the farmer achieved a 90% submission rate on his cows over 23 days. He got about 14 non-bulling cows scanned for any issues, which led him to synchronise a few of them. Leader used a team of eight dairy bulls and five beef bulls, in which the best cows based off milk recording data received a dairy straw and the rest recieved a beef straw. The dairy bull teams weighted average had an economic breeding index (EBI) of €334 with 0.34% fat and 0.22% protein adding up to 32.7kg of milk solids. The team of bulls averaged €10 in the health sub-index, which is a focus for Leader this year as he mentioned that tuberculosis (TB) is a serious problem in his area. The Leaders cows out grazing The beef straws used on the farm have over a €100 beef sub-index within the Dairy Beef Index and are all Angus bulls, as Leader sets his calving difficulty and then tries to maximise the carcass weight. The herd has an Economic Breeding Index (EBI) of €244 and has a maintenance sub-index of €13, meaning the cows on average weigh about 575kg. The main emphasis for Leader is to focus on percentages and kg of milk solids, as he does not want to go big on milk due to the nitrates banding and aims to have a 19% replacement rate. The cows normally produce about 515kg of milk solids through about 6,000L of milk on a normal year. Last year, they produced 476kg MS/cow with 15.77L/cow/day at 4.36% fat and 3.65% protein. This reduced performance was put down to the bad weather and reduced grass growth. Leader said he grew 11t of grass last year, which was well back on his usual 12-12.5t of grass DM/ha and fed 1,330kg of meal/cow, which is above his aim of 1,000kg of meal/cow/year. Leader talking about how the breeding season is progressing 30 heifers on the farm were synchronised a few days into the breeding season and Leader noted that there has not been much activity since, as two bulls have been put in with them to mop up any repeats. Heat detection is done through tail paint and analysing the paint as cows come in for milking. Artificial insemination (AI) is due to finish up shortly, as stock bulls will run with the herd of cows for the rest of breeding. Leader will continue to AI cows for about a week after the bulls were let out, to give the bulls time to settle in and so they experience no lull in calving next March. The Leaders achieved an 80% six-week calving rate this year, with a 371 day calving interval, highlighting the farmers' efficiency in getting cows back in calf.
