NYY news: Historic Judge-ment

Yahooa day ago

CBS Sports | Mike Axisa: Friday night was the Yankees' 50th game of the season, which has once again seen Aaron Judge play a gigantic role for the team. With a big game on Friday against the Rockies, Judge had a chance to stay above the .400 batting average mark that he's been hovering around for much of the season. Doing that through the full first 50 games is something that doesn't happen much and the most recent instances have all been Hall of Famers.
New York Daily News | Gary Phillips: While there have been some very notable bad moments, the Yankees' bullpen has been very solid on the whole. One exception to that has been Ian Hamilton, though. Thanks in part to some iffy command, Hamilton has struggled this year, having been a very reliable part of the bullpen the two previous seasons. Despite that, Hamilton is still showing some positive signs, which the Yankees hope will mean the good version of the pitcher will reappear soon.

SB Nation | Clara Morris: While playing for the Yankees, Mark Teixeira always seemed like a fairly affable guy. However, there's one guy we absolutely know he despised: Vincente Padilla. The first baseman and the pitcher had multiple run-ins over the years, which are highlighted by our mothership in 'Beef History.'
Denver Gazette | Kevin Henry: The Yankees' visit to Denver this weekend brings DJ LeMahieu back to his former stomping grounds, and the infielder still has some fond feelings for his former Rockies' team.

The Chiefs beat ACT Brumbies and will face the Crusaders in the Super Rugby final

HAMILTON, New Zealand -- The Hamilton-based Chiefs will travel to Christchurch to play the Crusaders in next weekend's Super Rugby final after beating the ACT Brumbies 37-17 on Saturday to reach the title match for the third-straight year. Winger Emoni Narawa scored two tries for the Chiefs and Corey Toole scored a double for the Brumbies as each side scored three tries. Chiefs flyhalf Damian McKenzie separated the teams, kicking six penalties and two conversions for 22 points to surpass 200 points for the season. Fullback Josh Jacomb scored the Chiefs' third try in the 64th minute to establish a 20-point margin and McKenzie's try-saving tackle on Tom Wright two minutes later snuffed out a potential Brumbies rally. 'The Brumbies came out of the blocks fast as we knew they would and I just love the way we were really composed and stuck to our game,' McKenzie said. 'We put the ball in front of our forwards and our set piece was great tonight.' The Brumbies were Australia's last hope in the playoffs as they attempted to win the Super Rugby title for the first time since 2004. Their defeat means Australian teams are now 0-21 in Super Rugby matches in New Zealand. The Brumbies suffered a major blow when Wallabies flyhalf Noah Lolesio failed a head injury assessment in the 11th minute. The kicking game was integral to the Brumbies' plan and while they used it to keep pressure on the Chiefs and to gain field position, Lolesio's early departure was a turning point. The Brumbies had the Chiefs under defensive pressure for long periods in both halves but while hooker Billy Pollard opened the scoring with a try from a lineout drive in the 15th minute the Chiefs were later able to neutralize that threat. Pollard's early try followed his double in the Brumbies' quarterfinal win over the Wellington-based Hurricanes. He finishes with 11 tries for the season as does Toole, who scored his tries on either side of halftime. Narawa scored his first try in the 20th minute, picking the ball up from the base of an attacking ruck and scything through the Brumbies' defense. Toole scored off a precise cross-kick from replacement flyhalf Jack Debreczeni, who previously played for the Chiefs. But penalties to McKenzie gave the Chiefs a 19-12 lead at halftime. Toole scored three minutes after the restart after a lone dash down the left-wing touch. The Brumbies were right in the match at that point, trailing 19-17. But Narawa scored his second four minutes later to begin a run of 18 unanswered points by the Chiefs. The Chiefs will now attempt to go one step further after losing in the final to the Crusaders and the Blues in each of the last two years. They will attempt in Christchurch next Saturday to win their third Super Rugby title and first since 2013 which the Crusaders are seeking their 13th championship.

Brumbies stretch Australian Super hoodoo in New Zealand

Australia's wait for a Super Rugby Pacific finals winner in New Zealand continues after the ACT Brumbies crashed 37-17 to the Chiefs in Hamilton, with playmaker Noah Lolesio an early casualty. Playing in their fourth successive semi-final, the gallant Brumbies again missed a grand final berth while the Chiefs will play in their third straight title decider, taking on the Crusaders next Saturday in Christchurch. No Australian team have ever won a final in New Zealand, with the Brumbies following Queensland out of the competition after the Reds were beaten by the Crusaders in the qualifying final. While it was three tries a piece, penalties proved a killer for the visitors, who tallied 11 to the Chiefs' seven All Blacks sharp-shooter Damien McKenzie booted six penalty goals as well as two conversions and set up the Chiefs' third try in a starring performance. The flyhalf also pulled off a miracle tackle in the 65th minute, getting his hand under the ball to deny a Brumbies fullback Tom Wright a certain try to stall any chance of a fightback. The Brumbies' quest to end a 0-20 record suffered a major setback with Wallabies No.10 Lolesio departing just 10 minutes in after an accidental head-knock while making a tackle. His replacement, Jack Debreczeni, who has hardly played this Super season, did an admirable job but the Brumbies still missed their chief playmaker, who is shifting his career to Japan. The Canberra outfit were well in the hunt at halftime, only trailing 19-12, with hooker Billy Pollard rumbling across and winger Corey Toole scoring the first of his two tries off a Debreczeni cross-field kick. But the Brumbies' penalty count was already double the Chiefs, including a scrum penalty after the halftime hooter which McKenzie slotted. While the Brumbies scored first in the second half, with Toole bumping off McKenzie en route to a brilliant individual try to get within two, Narawa hit straight back for his second. The ACT side were unable to add to their tally while two McKenzie penalties and the No.10 offloading to Josh Jacomb sealed a dominant win.
