Authorities: Wilson County man charged in 2024 fatal shooting of North Carolina man, 81
An Old Hickory man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of an 81-year-old man who went missing from his North Carolina home in August 2024.
Nicolai Chisala Hubberling, 21, is facing a first-degree murder charge after police in Bladen County, North Carolina said an anonymous tip in April led to a connection between Hubberling and William Scott Lowry, of Ammon, North Carolina.
Lowry was last seen walking on FL. McDaniel Road near his home.
Hubberling told several people about his love of killing animals to dissect them, but he wanted "more," police said.
The Bladen County Sheriff's Office said Hubberling told people he shot Lowry while the victim was hitchhiking outside of Fayetteville, North Carolina in Bladen County.
Hubberling told people he got rid of Lowry's body in an unknown location, police said.
Bladen County and the Wilson County Sheriff's Office worked together to arrest Hubberling May 29 in Wilson County, where he relocated after he was discharged from the military.
Hubberling is being held without bond in Wilson County. He is scheduled to be extradited to Bladen County.
The investigation into the Lowry case is continuing, police said.

Children of Melissa and Mark Hortman issue message following fatal shooting
Sophie and Colin Hortman are responding to the fatal shooting of their parents, Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and Mark Hortman. In a written statement released Monday night, Sophie and Colin Hortman said they're "devastated and heartbroken." "They were the bright lights at the center of our lives, and we can't believe they are gone," the statement said. "Their love for us was boundless. We miss them so much." Melissa and Mark Hortman were shot and killed Saturday night in their Brooklyn Park home, and state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot and injured in what Gov. Tim Walz has called politically motivated shootings. A manhunt for the suspect, 57-year-old Vance Boelter, lasted for over 36 hours. He was taken into custody on Sunday night in Sibley County. Sophie and Colin Hartman in the statement thanked law enforcement for their "swift action that saved others." "Our parents touched so many lives, and they leave behind an incredible legacy of dedication to their community that will live on in us, their friends, their colleagues and co-workers, and every single person who knew and loved them," the statement said. The message also listed different ways people can honor the memory of Melissa and Mark Hoffman, including planting a tree, visiting a local park, petting a dog, telling a cheesy joke to loved ones, baking something, trying a new hobby and "standing up for what you believe in, especially if that thing is justice and peace." Boelter faces six federal charges and four state charges. Yvette Hoffman said her husband was shot nine times and she was shot eight times. Both underwent surgery following the incident. "Our family is so humbled by the love and outpouring from everyone," Yvette Hoffman said in a text message to U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar on Sunday.

Man found guilty of bludgeoning 2 to death in Dayton sentenced to at least 25 years
Jun. 16—A Dayton man will spend at least 25 years in prison after he reportedly beat a husband and wife to death with a sledgehammer last year. Cortney Tavion Lowe, 34, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison, according to the Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office. He was also designated as a violent offender and will be on Ohio's Violent Offender Registry. "The brutal murders of Cathy and Danny Bell were senseless, and this violent and dangerous defendant should never be let out of prison," said Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. Around 6:10 a.m. on Dec. 3, Dayton police responded to Wayne Avenue near Belmont High School after an RTA bus driver reported a bloody man was walking around. Lowe was shoeless and only wearing a t-shirt and thermal underwear, according to the prosecutor's office. When officers spoke to Lowe, he said he was OK, but the blood belonged to Cathy Bell, according to a Dayton Municipal Court affidavit. Additional crews responded to the Bells' home on Holly Avenue. Investigators found Cathy Bell, 64, and Danny Bell, 66, dead on separate floors of the home. "It was clear both suffered from blunt force trauma," an affidavit read. "A sledgehammer was located in the bedroom where Ms. Bell was found covered in blood." A Montgomery County grand jury indicted Lowe on six counts of murder and four counts of felonious assault last year. Lowe pleaded guilty to two counts of murder and one count of aggravated burglary on June 4.
