Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Tel Aviv is arming factions in Gaza that oppose Hamas, prompting fierce criticism and warnings from former officials as well as defence analysts. It was earlier reported that Benjamin Netanyahu personally approved the transfer of weapons to a Gaza-based group led by Yasser Abu Shabab, a controversial figure linked to a local clan in Rafah. In a video posted on social media, Benjamin Netanyahu defended the decision, saying, 'What's wrong with this? It saves the lives of Israeli soldiers. Publicising it only helps Hamas."
Defence Officials Confirm Weapons Transfers
Reports claimed, citing Israeli defence sources, that the weapons- primarily Kalashnikov rifles, including some seized from Hamas- were provided to the Abu Shabab group with Benjamin Netanyahu's authorisation to the clan which operates in the Rafah area, currently under Israeli military control.
Earlier, Avigdor Lieberman, leader of the Yisrael Beiteinu party and former defence minister, accused Benjamin Netanyahu of bypassing cabinet approval to arm a group of 'criminals and felons, identified with the Islamic State group". He said, 'To my knowledge, this did not go through cabinet," adding that the move endangers Israeli national security.
Clan Backed By Benjamin Netanyahu Accused of Looting Aid, Ties Denied
The armed group, which calls itself the Popular Forces, claims its purpose is to protect humanitarian aid convoys in Gaza. However, reports suggest the faction has instead been looting those convoys. The European Council on Foreign Relations previously labelled Abu Shabab's group a 'criminal gang."
Hamas has condemned the group, accusing its members of 'theft and betrayal". Meanwhile, Abu Shabab, in a statement posted online, denied receiving Israeli support, saying, 'Our weapons are simple, outdated, and came through the support of our own people."
Benjamin Netanyahu 'Restless'?
Former deputy IDF chief and opposition politician Yair Golan, who leads the Democrats party, called the move 'reckless." In a post on X, he wrote, 'Netanyahu is a threat to Israel's national security. Instead of securing a deal to bring home the hostages and ensuring the safety of Israeli citizens, he's creating a new ticking time bomb in Gaza."

The report shares chilling testimonies of minors who say they were 'raped" and 'assaulted" by clerics trusted to teach them. 'All the boys in the village were talking about the risk of being raped in the madrasas … I didn't think it could happen to me," a 14-year-old boy told the publication, recalling how he was raped by the mullah who ran his school. In a video clip shared by the outlet on social media platform X, a minor recounts being taken by his headmaster under the pretext of cleaning his house. 'I got on his motorbike and we left. He came into the room, closed the door and started assaulting me," the minor says in the recording. 'He pulled down his trousers and took mine off by force. And then he did horrible things to me. I couldn't stop crying," the boy narrates. This is not the first report to expose such abuse. In 2017, the Associated Press published a major investigation revealing hundreds of sexual abuse cases within Pakistan's madrasas. That report, based on police records and interviews with victims, families, clerics, aid workers, and officials, warned that the actual number of cases could be much higher due to widespread underreporting and silence. Currently, as per the country's government data, there are at least 17,738 registered madrasas in Pakistan, educating about 2.2 million children. However, many more religious schools operate without any formal oversight. There is no central authority to regulate these institutions or to respond to allegations of abuse. North Korea hit by major internet outage, likely due to internal cause
North Korea's internet was hit by a major outage that lasted several hours on Saturday, knocking off connection to government web sites and official news services online and severing the reclusive country from cyberspace. It was not clear what caused the outage but it may have been internal rather than a cyberattack, as connections via China and Russia were affected, said researchers who monitor North Korea's internet and technology infrastructure. North Korea's main official news services, its Foreign Ministry, and the Air Koryo national airline were among websites inaccessible on Saturday, before they started coming back slowly around midday according to checks by Reuters. North Korea's entire internet infrastructure was not showing up on systems that can monitor internet activities, and email services were also affected, Junade Ali, a UK-based researcher who monitors the North Korean internet, said earlier. 'Hard to say if this is intentional or accidental – but seems like this is internal rather than an attack.' Officials at South Korea's cyber terror response centre, a police division that monitors North Korea's cyber activities, could not be reached for comment. Martyn Williams, who specializes in North Korea's technology and infrastructure at the Washington-based Stimson Center, also said the cause appeared to be internal as the Chinese and Russian connections were not working. North Korea has one of the world's most strictly controlled internet systems, including access to any form of online communication. The general public has access only to an intranet set up by the government and that is not connected to the wider global network. An elite few in the government and leadership are allowed open internet access, and government and news websites often serve up propaganda for outside audiences. North Korea has in previous years experienced large internet outages suspected as being caused by cyberattacks. The country operates elite teams of hackers, including a group known as Lazarus run by the government intelligence apparatus, that are blamed for attacks against foreign institutions and companies and more recently for theft and the laundering of cryptocurrencies. North Korea denies involvement in hacking, crypto thefts and other cybercrime.
