Toyota has hybridised the chonky new Land Cruiser, and straight off the bat has reassured us that "the system in no way compromises the Land Cruiser's ability to operate in extreme conditions and rough terrain". Phew. Welcome to the first electrified LC.
Mildly electrified, for this be a 48V stop-start system, rather than an able-to-run-on-e-power-alone setup. It's the same version that sits in the Hilux, which means an electric motor-generator, a 48V li-on battery and a DC-DC convertor. That's all bundled up and mated to a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder and eight-speed automatic 'box.

The hybrid bit adds 16bhp/48lb ft to the LC, and charges itself via engine braking. Naturally, Toyota said overall efficiency has been improved.
And because the motor-generator has been positioned high up on the engine block, Toyota said the LC "can still wade at low speed through water up to 700mm deep". It's also more compact than Toyota's full-hybrid system.
Other changes include a small update to the digital display, where a new read-out will inform drivers of the engine's regen status.
Toyota said the new 48V system will be bolted onto every UK car including the Land Cruiser Commercial (not an advert, but a tradey's LC), though hasn't said how much it'll cost. In any case, it'll arrive later this year.

Amazon to invest £40bn in UK - with more warehouses and thousands of new jobs
Amazon has said it will invest £40bn in the UK over the next three years as it creates thousands of jobs and opens four new warehouses. The online shopping giant will build two huge fulfilment centres in the East Midlands, which it expects to open in 2027. The exact locations are still to be revealed. Two others - in Hull and Northampton - were previously announced and are set to be finished this year and in 2026 respectively, with 2,000 jobs expected at each site. Amazon is already one of the country's biggest private employers - with around 75,000 staff. Two new buildings will also go up at its corporate headquarters in east London, while other investment includes new delivery stations, upgrading its transport network and redeveloping Bray Film Studios in Berkshire - which it bought last year. The £40bn figure also includes most of the £8bn announced in 2024 for building and maintaining UK data centres, as well as staff wages and benefits. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the investment into Amazon's third-biggest market after the US and Germany was a "massive vote of confidence in the UK as the best place to do business". "It means thousands of new jobs - real opportunities for people in every corner of the country to build careers, learn new skills, and support their families," said Sir Keir. The chancellor, Rachel Reeves, said it was a "powerful endorsement of Britain's economic strengths". Amazon chief executive Andy Jassy stressed the investment would benefit communities across the UK. "When Amazon invests, it's not only in London and the South East," he said. "We're bringing innovation and job creation to communities throughout England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, strengthening the UK's economy and delivering better experiences for customers wherever they live." However, Amazon's immense power and size continues to raise concerns among some regulators, unions and campaigners. There have long been claims over potentially dangerous conditions at its warehouses - denied by the company, while last week Britain's grocery regulator launched an investigation into whether it breached rules on supplier payments.

EPI and EuroPA join forces in push for European payments sovereignty
The European Payments Alliance (EuroPA) and European Payments Initiative (EPI) are joining forces to explore ways to make it easy for consumers to send and receive payments seamlessly across the continent. 0 The move signals an attempt to wrest control of the EU's payments ecosystem away from US card schemes and Big Tech giants and secure the Bloc's sovereignty in payments. Bank-backed EPI launched its Wero digital wallet late last year, harnessing the potential of account-to-account (A2A) payments to help European banks take on the might of Visa and Mastercard. EuroPA is an alliance established between Italy's Bancomat, Spanish scheme Bizum and Portugal's MB Way/Sibs designed to enable their 50 million users to send and receive money across borders instantly to mobile phone numbers. It has since added members, including Poland's Blik, Greece's Iris, and Nordic giant Vipps MobilePay. Now, EuroPA and EPI are investigating a joint offering that would combine their efforts to cover all use cases - person-to-person and commercial payments both online and in-store - across the markets of the participating services. A study is set to be completed by the end of the summer into an agreement that will initially cover 15 European countries, collectively representing over 382 million inhabitants (84% of the EU population and Norway), enabling them to continue using their preferred digital payment options both locally and across Europe. The two bodies argue that interconnecting existing systems is a "rapid path forward to European [payments] sovereignty and independence," something which BNP Paribas COO Thierry Laborde recently warned is "no longer a future ambition, it is a European necessity".
