Tourism Malaysia steps up VMY2026 preparations with Langkawi dialogue

Tourism Malaysia held a high-level engagement session with industry stakeholders in Langkawi today, marking a significant step in operational preparations for Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VMY2026).
Tourism Malaysia deputy director-general (Planning) Shahrin Mokhtar said the session, which involved tourism industry players, focused on intensifying promotional strategies, enhancing tourism products and strengthening public–private sector cooperation to support the goals of VMY2026.
"The selection of 'Malaysia: Sustainable and Culturally Rich Destination' as the theme for VMY2026 reflects the nation's aspiration to position Malaysia as an exclusive destination that balances tourism development with the preservation of natural and cultural heritage.
"Langkawi is a world-class tourism destination renowned for its natural beauty, stunning beaches and diverse flora and fauna. In addition to being recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark, Langkawi is known as a premier destination that upholds sustainability values," he said in a statement today.
The session was officiated by Kedah State Economic Planning Division director Junaidi Abdul Rani@Abdul Ghani and attended by Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) chief executive officer Datuk Haslina Abdul Hamid, along with representatives from government agencies, tourism associations, airlines, hotel operators, tourism product providers and local travel agents.
Shahrin said the Kedah government's continued commitment to green tourism initiatives has helped position Langkawi as one of the key destinations in energising VMY2026.
"Among the initiatives undertaken are environmental conservation, the rebranding of existing tourism products and the promotion of sustainability-based activities to enrich the tourist experience on the island.
"With continued support from various stakeholders, Langkawi is expected to remain a strategic asset in making VMY2026 a success and in positioning Malaysia as a premier sustainable and resilient tourism destination," he said.

Arrival figures must be reported correctly

VNEXPRESS, an online newspaper based in Vietnam has done it again by publishing 'Malaysia beats Thailand to become Southeast Asia tourism champion' in its June 3 report that Malaysia received 10.1 million foreign arrivals in the first quarter of this year, and Thailand 9.55 million. But tourist arrivals to Malaysia from January to March this year was 6,366,801, and the 10.1 million came about by adding another 3,736,711 excursionist arrivals. For apple-to-apple comparison, tourist arrival figures are normally used, not excursionist or visitor arrivals. It started after I had written ' Malaysia recorded 29 million visitor arrivals in 2023 ', which was published by Focus Malaysia on Feb 20, 2024. It was picked up by VnExpress and published on Feb 23 under 'Malaysia beats Thailand to become most-visited country in Southeast Asia'. However, my first paragraph explicitly stated that in 2023, Malaysia recorded almost 29 million visitor arrivals and they comprised 20,141,846 foreign tourists and 8,822,462 foreign excursionists, or a total of 28,964,308 foreign visitors, without comparing with other countries. The number of tourists to Thailand that year was more than 28.15 million, far higher than the 20.1 million to Malaysia. Many tourism industry personnel and the media could not distinguish between tourists and visitors, and often made fatal mistakes when reporting arrival figures. Interestingly, Tourism Malaysia is up to speed by updating its Infographic on Visitor Performance to Malaysia until April this year. Tourist arrivals for the first four months of 2025 were 8,356,921 and 5.6% below that of 2019 in the same period. At this rate, the total number for this year will be around 25 million, way below the 31.3 million projected by Tourism Malaysia in February. Fortunately, excursionist arrivals surged by 64%, from 3,048,205 in the first four months of 2019 to 5,027,263. As such, total visitor arrivals to Malaysia in 2025 is likely to reach an historic high of 40 million, compared to 35 million in 2019. Asean countries, especially Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Brunei, will continue to provide the bulk of foreign visitors to Malaysia for a very long time. Nevertheless, the greatest growth potential is from the two most populous countries in the world, as long as citizens from China and India are granted visa-free entry to Malaysia, along with over 160 other countries around the globe that have long enjoyed this facility. While Tourism Malaysia continues to adjust its promotions and strategies to suit ever changing source markets, it is up to individual tourism industry players to exploit the full potential of their niche markets that they excel in. The performance of our inbound tourism is measured by two key factors, namely tourism expenditures and foreign arrivals. Both figures must be measured and reported correctly. ‒ June 5, 2025 YS Chan is master trainer for Mesra Malaysia and Travel and Tours Enhancement Course and an Asean Tourism Master Trainer. Environmentalists propose Japanese tech to eliminate smells at wet market

Yee and his team visiting the KK Central Market. KOTA KINABALU: Environmentalists are proposing the use of Japanese microorganism technology to eliminate persistent odours at wet markets here. The proposal, raised by the Sabah Environmental Protection Association (Sepa), has been submitted to the state Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry, along with a plan to test the technology at the Central Market here for three months. Sepa president Alexander Yee said the initiative would be a valuable opportunity to work with the ministry to improve hygiene and cleanliness at the market. The move followed a courtesy call by the association to minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew in April. "We were encouraged by the minister to play a proactive role in maintaining cleanliness in the state capital in anticipation of Visit Malaysia Year 2026. 'So, I led a team of exco members to visit several sites including the KK Central Market, before proposing any possible solutions," Yee said. He said that as a high tourist concentration area, the market and its surrounding destinations should be kept clean and presentable.

Malaysia sets sights on 500,000 UK tourists for VM2026, says Ahmad Zahid

LONDON — Malaysia is targeting 500,000 tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom (UK) as part of the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He expressed optimism that the target can be met, citing a significant increase in the number of tourists from the UK during the first four months of this year. He is confident that this upward trend will continue. 'I am satisfied with the efforts carried out by Tourism Malaysia in London, especially regarding the goal of attracting 500,000 tourists from the United Kingdom. I am confident that this target can be achieved,' he said at a press conference following the launch of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) here on Tuesday. Earlier, Ahmad Zahid participated in a tourism roundtable session with key players from the UK tourism industry. During the session, he said that there is a proposal to create a special package for tourists flying with Malaysian Airlines, offering stopover incentives to encourage them to spend time in Kuala Lumpur or other destinations in Peninsular Malaysia. 'I have agreed to bring this proposal to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and present it to the Cabinet so that the package can be implemented by 2026. 'Malaysia Airlines had previously offered a similar package with considerable success, so we are optimistic that the suggestion from the Malaysia Airlines manager in London can be adopted and implemented,' he said. In his opening remarks, Ahmad Zahid noted that in 2024, 390,035 travellers from the UK visited Malaysia, contributing over RM2.5 billion in visitor receipts. He also highlighted that Malaysia has approved 103 new international routes, 29 additional flight frequencies, and five charter flights. 'All in preparation for Visit Malaysia 2026. I believe these routes represent more than just infrastructure -they are gateways to opportunities for travellers, operators, and investors alike,' he said . — BERNAMA
