SYDNEY (Reuters) -Rugby Australia locked in another of the players they hope will help the Wallabies to success against the British & Irish Lions and at the 2027 World Cup when fullback Tom Wright extended his contract for another three years on Friday.
Wright, a dynamic ball carrier who played 12 tests in the number 15 shirt last year, was courted by rugby league clubs looking to entice him back to the 13-man game as well as by overseas union sides but decided to stay put.
"There's definitely so much to look forward to, and it definitely played a part," the 27-year-old told reporters in Canberra.
"Guys' careers can pan over a certain amount of time, and it just doesn't fall at the same time that a Lions series does. A few years ago, I probably didn't appreciate how awesome that opportunity might be ... to don the jersey against the Lions.
"With it being so close now, you sort of get the taste for that atmosphere starting to build, and how much hype there is around, and similarly with a home World Cup ..."
Wright played rugby league professionally after school before making the switch back to union with the ACT Brumbies and said the desire to remain in Canberra with his young family was another big attraction.
Under Director of High Performance Peter Horne, Rugby Australia have been remarkably successful this year in securing the services of a number of top players through 2027 and beyond.
Wright joins Jake Gordon, Len Ikitau, Fraser McReight, Nick Frost, Harry Wilson, Jeremy Williams, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, Matt Philip, Isaac Kailea and Lachlan Lonergan in committing his future to Australia.
"Tom has developed into an excellent outside back," Horne said in a RA statement.
"He has established himself as a consistent and popular member of the Wallabies squad and we feel he is entering the prime of his career as a test player."
Australia host the Lions in three tests at the end of July and start of August.

Soccer-Netherlands 'obligated' to top World Cup qualifying group, says Koeman
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Nations League - Quarter Final - Second Leg - Spain v Netherlands - Estadio de Mestalla, Valencia, Spain - March 23, 2025 Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman before the match REUTERS/Pablo Morano/File photo (Reuters) - The Netherlands are obligated to win their World Cup qualifying group, coach Ronald Koeman said on Tuesday as they began preparation for their opening Group G clash against Finland in Helsinki on Saturday. It will be their first match in their bid to qualify for next year's finals in North America, followed by a second fixture on Tuesday when they host Malta in Groningen. The Dutch belatedly kick off their qualifiers because they played in the Nations League quarter-finals in March where they drew twice with Spain before being eliminated on penalties. "Maybe it is easier to play football against Spain," Koeman told a press conference. "Because no one expects anything from us then. "Finland and Malta are different types of opponents. We will have more of the ball, and they try to stop us. "We are obligated to finish first in this group, but we do not underestimate anyone and we need to bring the energy that we have shown in our last few matches." The group also includes Lithuania and Poland, who top the standings after two wins in March. The winners qualify for the World Cup while the runners-up advances to a playoff competition. "We want to be good for all the matches and perform much more consistently," Koeman said. "We have shown that against one of the best countries in the world, which gives us confidence." One problem Koeman admitted, however, was the lack of a recognised centre forward. "We don't have top strikers now. I don't know what is coming through the ranks with the 15-16-year-olds, but it is clear that at the moment we do not have the classic striker of the past. Players like (Patrick) Kluivert, (Klaas-Jan) Huntelaar, and (Ruud) Van Nistelrooy. You don't see players like them around anymore." Koeman is not sure who would lead the line in the qualifiers over the next week. "It will probably be Memphis (Depay) or Wout (Weghorst) at the top of the attack," he said. "But (Cody) Gakpo and (Donyell) Malen are all possibilities in that position." (Writing by Mark Gleeson in Cape Town; Editing by Ed Osmond)

Traffic jam delays start of England v West Indies ODI
THE start of the third one-day international between England and the West Indies at the Oval on Tuesday was delayed after the tourists were stuck in London traffic. Rain might well have delayed the scheduled 1:00 pm local time (1200 GMT) start in any event. But as England players warmed up on the outfield the England and Wales Cricket Board issued a statement saying the tourists were 'stuck in heavy traffic'. The West Indies eventually arrived at the ground, with the toss set to take place at 1:10 pm. England have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series after a 238-run victory at Edgbaston and a three-wicket win in Cardiff. Victory for West Indies in London would boost their hopes of World Cup qualification. Only the top eight teams in the International Cricket Council rankings, together with the hosts, qualify directly for the 2027 World Cup in southern Africa. The West Indies are ninth in the standings, with England in eighth position.

Alpine skiing-Italy's Brignone still not sure she will be fit for Olympics
FILE PHOTO: Alpine Skiing - FIS Alpine Ski World Cup - Women's Downhill - Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany - January 25, 2025 Italy's Federica Brignone celebrates on the podium after winning the Women's Downhill REUTERS/Gintare Karpaviciute/File Photo MILAN (Reuters) -Reigning World Cup overall champion Federica Brignone cast doubts over her participation in next year's Winter Olympics on home snow in Italy two months after she suffered serious injuries. The 34-year-old, one of Italy's leading medal hopes at the Games, fractured her left leg and tore knee ligaments when she crashed into a gate during a race in the Italian championships. "I would like to say that I will be present at the next Olympics, but as of today I don't know. I am working for that too, but my health comes first of all," Brignone told reporters in the medical centre in Turin on Tuesday. "It is difficult to make any predictions, because there are many steps and we don't have any precise schedule," she said, adding that she remained confident and positive. Brignone, who is walking with clutches, underwent surgery after the crash in April. "As of today we can rule out a further operation, Federica had a major injury but the ACL is fine," said Andrea Panzeri, president of the medical staff of Italy's winter sports federation.
