Schedule power cuts with water supply hours to thwart illegal pumps: RMC
Raipur: The
Raipur municipal commissioner
has requested the power company to schedule electricity cuts during the water supply hours so that illegal practice of using pumps to excessively extract water and an equitable water distribution during peak summer can be ensured.
RMC commissioner Vishwadeep has asked that this arrangement to occur from May 1 to June 15 of this year during morning and evening water supply hours to address temporary water shortages at pipeline tail-ends. People using an invertor may throw a wrench in the equitable aspirations of these plans.
The RMC commissioner said that due to increased demand for drinking water in summer, many citizens use pumps to extract water, which disrupts equitable distribution and leads to inadequate water supply to households located at the tail end of pipelines.
As a result, the civic body has been receiving frequent complaints about temporary water shortages. To ensure that every citizen receives sufficient drinking water during summer, it would be appropriate to suspend electricity in affected areas during the water supply periods mentioned above.

The RMC commissioner has written a letter to the superintending engineer of
Chhattisgarh State Power Distribution Company Limited
(CSPDCL), Raipur.
He urged that the power supply be suspended daily from 6:15 am to 6:45 am and 6:15 pm to 6:45 pm from May 1 to June 15, 2025, during the water supply hours. He has also asked the engineer to instruct subordinate staff in the concerned areas accordingly so that the summer water distribution can be managed smoothly.
M. Vishwakarma, superintending engineer of the power distribution company, stated that they have received the letter.
"We will take up the matter with the CSEB and make an appropriate decision," Vishwakarma said.
Meanwhile, another senior officer in CSPDCL disagreed with the RMC commissioner's request for evening power cuts. After 6 pm, it gets dark and people need electricity. Practically, it may not be feasible.
However, there is no issue with scheduled power cuts in the morning, which we have already implemented, the official said.

Minor repairs fine but don't alter heritage character: Panel to school
1 2 3 Kolkata: Officials from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and West Bengal Heritage Commission conducted a second inspection of the La Martiniere schools on Sunday afternoon. They informed the school authorities that they would not need to seek permission for minor repairs such as fixing sewerage and drainage pipes, replacing sanitaryware and broken tiles, and changing electrical wires. The officials also requested the school to submit two lists — one detailing short-term repair requirements and another for long-term needs. They assured that the civic body would try to clear these requests expeditiously, provided they did not lead to structural changes or alter the buildings' heritage character. Additionally, the two schools will seek permission to install floodlights on the playgrounds. A KMC engineer and a commission representative visited the school around noon on Sunday, following a Calcutta High Court order for a thorough inspection. This was after the court found a report submitted after an earlier inspection last Monday to be inadequate. On Sunday, the visiting officials checked all the areas highlighted by the school, including seepage from the roof, damp patches, cracks in walls, plaster peeling off the ceiling, and broken tiles. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 75% off installation for LeafFilter LeafFilter Gutter Protection Get Rates Undo A KMC official said while they have asked the school to seek approval for repairs, they will halt all work if any heritage structure is affected. La Martiniere secretary Surpiyo Dhar, who has written multiple letters to KMC over the past couple of months seeking nod to undertake repairs during summer vacation, said the officials were extremely cooperative on Sunday. They appeared to understand the gravity of the situation and seemed eager to help the school carry out the repairs. "The case will be heard in court on June 10. But we expect a go-ahead from KMC even before that, as the court clearly stated that if the urgency of the situation requires it, KMC can give its permission without waiting for a further order from the court," said Dhar. KMC issued a stop-work notice to the school last Nov after an alumni association pointed out that the school had covered its heritage steps, which had names of past students engraved on them, with marble tiles.
