KUALA LUMPUR: Former national football team head coach Datuk K. Rajagobal feels that it is still too early to evaluate current coach Peter Cklamovski's impact on Harimau Malaya.
Rajagobal, however, believes that the team showed an improved performance in their 1-1 draw in the friendly against Cape Verde at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras on Thursday.
Although he was quick to point out that the Harimau Malaya squad still need to work hard to continue to improve, he also expressed confidence in Cklamovski, saying 'he (Cklamovski) knows what he is doing'.
'Every coach has his plans. We can see from his second game in charge (against Cape Verde), there is improvement, although they still have room to be better.
'Cklamovski knows which team they will be facing and the players he will field against Vietnam.'
They will face Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers at the National Stadium on June 10.
'I can't give an evaluation now. Usually, it will take about 10 matches before one can assess if there has been an improvement or not,' he said during the media conference to launch his book titled 'Inilah Saya K. Rajagobal' (This is me, K. Rajagobal) at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Festival yesterday.
In the friendly, world No. 131 Malaysia needed a 79th-minute Paulo Josue equaliser to hold world No. 72 Cape Verde to a 1-1 draw.
The national team will take on Cape Verde a second time, in a closed-door friendly, at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday.
The friendlies against Cape Verde are part of Malaysia's preparations for the crucial games against Vietnam in their second Group F match of the Asian qualifiers.
Meanwhile, Rajagobal, who guided Malaysia to the gold medal in the 2009 Laos SEA Games and the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup triumph, described his book as an effort to inspire the younger generation and serve as a medium for him to share his coaching experiences with future generations.
'The inspiration for writing this book came from my eldest son. Many legends never wrote or documented their life journeys for reference ... not just my own story, but those of other legends as well. This is my opportunity to share that struggle with the younger generation.
'I have stories about how I faced challenges and hardships that I want to share not only with sports fans but with all Malaysians.
'I felt that I had to write this to contribute something meaningful to the sports arena in the country,' said Rajagobal, who also used to coach Brunei. — Bernama

Safawi ready to roar in new position as Harimau Malaya striker
WINGER Muhammad Safawi Rasid is ready to embrace the challenge of playing in a new position as a striker in international matches for Harimau Malaya. Muhammad Safawi stated that the Tier 1 international match against Cape Verde last week was his first experience playing in the striker's position in a national team fixture. However, Muhammad Safawi who has more frequently been deployed on the wing and in central midfield positions previously, had no difficulty adapting to the new role. 'For me, there's no problem with an attacking position because perhaps the coach knows better what I do in training. So I took the responsibility that night to prove something. Alhamdulillah, we got a good result,' he said when met at the national team's training session here today. The 28-year-old player was fielded in the starting eleven, partnering with Mohamad Faisal Abdul Halim and Arif Aiman Mohd Hanapi in attack when Malaysia drew 1-1 with Cape Verde at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium, Cheras, last Thursday. Meanwhile, Muhammad Safawi considers the presence of heritage players in the national team as beneficial for creating a healthy competitive environment among players. 'I have no problem. Regardless of whether they are local players, naturalized players, or anyone, for me, in training, you have to give 100 percent, no excuses. I have no problem competing in training,' he said. Local media today reported that three new heritage players will arrive in Malaysia ahead of tomorrow night's match against Cape Verde. The three players mentioned are striker Rodrigo Holgado from the United States, Azerbaijan club Sabah FC defender Jon Irazabal, and Olympiacos striker Jefte Betancor, who is currently on loan at Panserraikos. Malaysia will face Cape Verde in a closed door friendly match at the National Stadium, Bukit Jalil here, tomorrow before their showdown against Vietnam in a Group F match of the 2027 Asia Cup qualifiers at the National Stadium, next Tuesday. Vietnam and Malaysia share the top spot in the group with three points each after winning their respective opening matches.

Harimau Malaya coach eyes June 10 Asian Cup clash against Vietnam to end 10-year winless streak
KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 — National head coach Peter Cklamovski has recognised the tough challenge ahead as Harimau Malaya aim to overturn more than a decade of winless results against Vietnam in their crucial Group F 2027 Asian Cup qualifier next Tuesday (June 10). The Australian coach said he respects Vietnam but is determined to make history with Malaysia. 'Malaysia hasn't beaten Vietnam for over 10 years. That's more than a decade and this is a moment we want to overturn and change a bit of history. 'So full respect to Vietnam. I don't focus on one player (opponent); I focus on the whole team. We look forward to the challenge on June 10th,' the 46-year-old coach told reporters when met during the national team's training session, which was also attended by Vietnamese media here, today. At the same time, he praised Vietnam who are led by South Korean Kim Sang Sik as a strong and skilful side, adding that he has studied the entire squad. 'I've watched all of them. They're a very good team, a strong squad. Full respect to Vietnam – they're a very good footballing side,' he said. Vietnam and Malaysia jointly top the group with three points each after winning their opening matches. For the record, the last time Malaysia defeated the Golden Star Warriors was in 2014 before suffering seven defeats and managing just one draw in their eight meetings across all competitions since. The last time the two teams met, Vietnam secured a 3-0 victory in the group stage of the 2022 AseanFootball Federation (AFF) Cup, now known as the Asean Championship. Cklamovski's men will face world number 72 ranked Cape Verde in a closed door friendly at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil here, tomorrow night after the two sides played out a 1-1 draw in their Tier 1 international match at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras, last Thursday. — Bernama
