Kerala IB officer suicide: Telegram chat reveals accused urged victim to end life
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A disturbing piece of evidence has emerged in the sensational suicide case of a female Immigration Bureau (IB) officer at Thiruvananthapuram airport, on March 24. The Telegram chat she had with Sukanth Suresh, a former IB officer who is accused of raping her and abetting her suicide, has been recovered by the cops where he is heard telling the woman to die by suicide so that he can marry another person.
The chat was recovered from the phone that was earlier seized by the police from a building where Sukanth was hiding after the police booked him in the suicide case.
Police said the retrieved chats clearly revealed that Sukanth was pushing the woman to suicide. When the woman said she wanted to die by suicide, Sukanth reportedly asked her when she was going to end her life so that he can marry another girl. To this she replied 'August 9'.
The woman's mobile phone was completely damaged when she jumped in front of a train and forensic experts had confirmed that retrieving data from the phone was not possible due to its condition. Hence the data retrieved from Sukanth's phone will be crucial in further investigation.
The police case is that the woman was exploited financially and physically by the accused following which she was forced to take her life. Sukanth had gone absconding after the incident and the police have so far failed to nab him. Hearing the anticipatory bail plea of Sukanth, the High Court had barred the police from arresting him till Monday. The HC is expected to deliver its verdict on the bail plea on Monday.

Delhi HC rejects Shabir Ahmed Shah's bail plea in NIA case
New Delhi [India], June 12 ( ANI): The Delhi High Court denied bail on Thursday to Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah. He is in judicial custody in a terror funding case lodged by the NIA in 2017. The high court has dismissed his appeal. In 2023, the trial court had dismissed his earlier bail application. The division bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Shalinder Kaur dismissed the appeal. The detailed order will be uploaded later in the day by the High Court. He had moved to the High Court against an order of a special NIA court denying bail. It was submitted that there were 24 cases against him. In 18 cases, he has been charge-sheeted, three cases have been dismissed, and three cases are pending investigation. Senior advocate Collin Gonsalves appeared for the petitioner Shah. He moved to the High Court in 2023. The trial court dismissed his earlier bail plea on July 7, 2023. Earlier in 2023, a notice was issued to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). He has sought bail in a terror funding case lodged by the NIA in 2017 against various separatist leaders of Jammu and Kashmir The counsel for the petitioner has submitted that it is a fresh bail application. He has been in custody since 2017, and the charge sheet has been filed against him. It was submitted that the trial court judge erroneously declined to grant bail to the appellant herein by observing that, given the bar under Section 43D(5) of UAPA and there being a prima facie case established at the point of framing charges, the appellant could not be granted bail. It was also submitted that the trial Court ignored the complete lack of material against the appellant, the prolonged period of custody undergone, and the fact that no criminality for the commission of the offence is assigned to the appellant. Not a single criminal act can be attributed to the appellant. It was further submitted that the Appellant is a reputed political leader in Kashmir, having founded the Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party in 1998 with the objectives of seeking the cooperation of people from within and outside the state, inculcating brotherhood, friendship, and goodwill, cultivating religious tolerance, regional and ethnic cooperation, and interaction. The plea said that the appellant finds no mention in the main chargesheet and the first supplementary chargesheet where all the aforementioned allegations have been stated, and the Investigation Agency has shown the offences that allegedly occurred due to the said conspiracy. The Investigation agency has, in fact, gone on to show the interlinkage between the accused person's charge sheet, where again the appellant finds no mention, the plea said. The FIR that was registered owing to the alleged conspiracy and the investigation showing the execution of the conspiracy in the main chargesheet by the accused persons admittedly does not find mention of accused Shabir Shah or his connivance in such conspiracy or any interlinkage insofar as the conspiracy or execution of the conspiracy is concerned. It is also submitted that the Appellant has only been included in the 2nd supplementary chargesheet and was arrested in pursuance of the same on 04.06.2019. The plea has stated that the Appellant has been incarcerated for over 4 years in the present FIR and intermittently for 35 years in different prisons in Kashmir and the country apart from being under house arrest for a substantial period, without a single conviction or charge against him. On May 30, 2017, NIA registered a case against 12 accused persons for alleged conspiracy to raise and collect funds for causing disruption by way of pelting stones, damaging public property, and thereby conspiring to wage war against the government of India. The appellant was arrested on June 4, 2019. In October 4, 2019, a Second Supplementary chargesheet was filed, and the appellant was included as an accused along with others. The allegations against the appellant included him playing a key role in building a separatist/militant movement in Jammu and Kashmir, inciting and instigating masses to shout slogans for secession of Jammu and Kashmir, paying tribute to family of slain terrorists, receiving money through hawala transactions, and raising funds through LOC trade which were used to fuel subversive and militant activities in Jammu and Kashmir. It is alleged that on 26.02.2019, his house was searched and a lot of incriminating material, including documents and electronic items, was seized from his house. Since the formation of JKDFP, the accused Shabir Ahmad became the mouthpiece of Pak ISI, which had been handling him through his Pak/POK-based representative Mehmood Ahmed Sagar. It is further alleged that the scrutiny of CDs recovered from his house has revealed numerous wherein accused Shabir Shah instances had made inflammatory speeches at several locations such as Kishtwar, Bhadarwa, Anantnag, Kargil, Poonch etc instigating the masses to shout slogans for secession of Jammu and Kashmir from the Union of India and created surcharged atmosphere against Government of India that people started pelting stones on the security forces. Investigation has also revealed that the accused Shabir Shah was in touch with Pak/POK-based militant leadership, including Syed Salahuddin and Hafiz Mohd. Saeed and Iftikar Haidar Rana, the trial court had noted in the order of July 7, 2023. It is further alleged that the accused Shabir Shah was duly supported by Pakistani agencies through the Hurriyat. Representatives such as Shafi Shair and Mehmood Sagar are based in Pakistan. (ANI)

'Bomb threats': All seven emails sent using VPN, one from India, say Himachal Police probe
The Himachal Pradesh Police has traced the origin of one of the seven emails received between April 16 and June 9, threatening to blow up several important government offices and the Himachal Pradesh High Court. All seven bomb threat emails, however, turned out to be hoaxes as security agencies did not find any suspicious object or explosive substance while searching the offices of Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena, Deputy Commissioners of Mandi, Kullu, Hamirpur and the high court premises. Two FIRs have been registered in Mandi and Kullu districts in this connection. Himachal Pradesh is among several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Kerala, Puducherry and Gujarat, which received similar email threats. Police sources said, 'Although the pattern and mode of sending all seven emails were similar, one of the emails was sent through a separate handle. All emails were sent via Virtual Private Network (VPN). Six were traced to a European country, but one originated from within India. That particular email, received on May 2, threatened to blow up multiple government offices, including the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Kullu. The probe agency, assisted by the State CID Cyber Cell, has also pinpointed the state from where that particular email was generated.' 'The structure and content of emails received in Himachal Pradesh closely matched those received in Kerala, Puducherry, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh. Three of the seven emails included two common threats: one to assassinate AIADMK leader and Tamil Nadu's leader of the Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS), and the other, a claim that the sender was 'Tahawwur Hussain Rana', the alleged mastermind of the Mumbai terror attacks, who was extradited from the US to India in April this year,' they said. When contacted, DIG of the State CID Cyber Cell Mohit Chawla told The Indian Express, 'All emails were treated seriously. Appropriate precautionary measures, including sanitisation of sensitive locations, were carried out. We have obtained strong leads, particularly in connection with one email. I cannot disclose further details due to the ongoing investigation. All emails were routed through VPNs, which mask the sender's identity. More concerning than these threat emails are the ongoing cyber-attacks, targeting government websites and digital infrastructure, especially those related to police departments, during and post-Operation Sindoor (launched on May 7).' A senior police officer said, 'It's not necessary to file a separate FIR for each email of a similar nature. Multiple complaints can be clubbed under a single FIR. We treated these emails as an opportunity to check our preparedness and alertness to deal with any urgent situation.' Threat emails timeline: April 15: An email received at the office of Mandi DC claimed the planting of explosives at several government offices. April 16: An email was sent to Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena, targeting the secretariat building, which also houses the Chief Minister's Office. April 25: Two separate emails were received, threatening to blow up the offices of the DCs of Chamba and Hamirpur. May 2: An email was received, threatening to blow up the Kullu DC office. May 26: Another threat email received, targeting the Himachal Pradesh secretariat. June 9: An email warned of suicide bombers with IEDs targeting the high court.

Russia attacks Ukraine's Kharkiv with deadly nighttime barrage of drones
A concentrated, nine-minute-long Russian drone attack on Ukraine's second-largest city of Kharkiv on Wednesday killed six people and injured 64, including nine children, Ukrainian officials said. The attack followed Russia's two biggest air assaults of the war on Ukraine this week, part of intensified bombardments that Moscow says are retaliatory measures for Kyiv's recent attacks in Russia. A new wave of drone attacks on four city districts was reported early on Thursday by Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov, including a drone that landed in a school courtyard and smashed windows. There were no other reports of casualties or damage. Elsewhere, two southern Ukrainian regions, Mykolaiv and Kherson, were left without electricity on Wednesday after Russian forces attacked an energy facility, the governors said. Kharkiv, in Ukraine's northeast, withstood Russia's full-scale advance in the early days of the war but has since been a regular target of drone, missile and guided aerial bomb assaults. Prosecutors in Kharkiv region said on the Telegram messaging app that the death toll in Tuesday night's incidents had risen to six as rescue teams pulled bodies from under the rubble. They said three people were still believed to be trapped. The strikes by 17 drones on Kharkiv sparked fires in 15 units of a five-storey apartment block and caused other damage in the city close to the Russian border, Mayor Terekhov said. "There are direct hits on multi-storey buildings, private homes, playgrounds, enterprises and public transport," Terekhov said on the Telegram messaging app. "Every new day now brings new despicable blows from Russia, and almost every blow is telling. Russia deserves increased pressure; with literally every blow it strikes against ordinary life, it proves that the pressure is not enough," President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Telegram. A Reuters witness saw emergency rescuers helping to carry people out of damaged buildings and administering care, while firefighters battled blazes in the dark. Nine of the injured, including a 2-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, have been hospitalised, Oleh Sinehubov, the governor of the broader Kharkiv region, said on Telegram. In total, the Ukrainian military said Russia had launched 85 drones overnight, 40 of which were shot down. In the southern Kherson region, workers were trying to restore electricity supplies after Russian forces attacked what its governor, Oleksandr Prokudin, said was "an important energy facility". "It is currently impossible to predict the duration of the work. Residents of the region, I ask you to show understanding and prepare for a prolonged power outage," he said on the Telegram messenger. The governor of the neighbouring Mykolaiv region, Vitaliy Kim, said his region was also experiencing emergency shutdowns but that power would soon be restored. Kherson region directly borders a war zone and is under daily drone, missile and artillery attack. The Mykolaiv region faces mainly missile and drone attacks. There was no immediate comment from Russia on the latest overnight attacks. Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war that Russia launched on its smaller neighbour in February 2022. But thousands of civilians have died in the conflict, the vast majority of them Ukrainian.
