Depression has almost doubled since before the pandemic and experts warn social media and family breakdowns are contributing to a 'lost and lonely generation' of Brits
Mental illness appears to be increasing across Britain with almost one in five adults now depressed. The Office for National Statistics questioned a representative sample of 4,600 people aged over 16 and found 18% experienced 'moderate to severe depressive symptoms' during April 2025. This is up from 16% the last time this survey was conducted in autumn 2022.
The latest edition of the Public Opinions and Social Trends poll indicates 26% of Brits aged 16 to 29 were depressed last month. The mental health charity SANE warns social media and the breakdown of families were contributing to a 'lost and lonely generation'.
Overall almost one in five Brits are considered to be depressed which is around double the 10% when survey was conducted before the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019/20.
Marjorie Wallace, chief executive office at SANE, said: 'Today's alarming figures from the ONS reveal the increasing mental health problems in younger people, which are not just due to more awareness and overdiagnosis as is sometimes claimed, but also likely to be linked to the effects of 24/7 exposure to social media as well as other factors such as the fragmentation of family structure. We are in danger of creating a lost and lonely generation, disconnected from themselves, their families and real friends.'

Depression rates decreased with age with it affecting 26% of those aged 16 to 29, 20% of those 30 to 49, 18% of those 50 to 69 and 8% of those aged 70 and over.
Marjorie Wallace added: 'Without treatment, depression can deteriorate and persist. In severe cases, it can lead to self-harm or suicide. More than 50% of callers to our helpline, particularly younger people, mention self-harm and suicidal thoughts - ten years ago it was 10 to 15%.'
Prof Stella Chan, the Charlie Waller Chair in Evidence-based Psychological Treatment at Reading University, said: "Mental health is a serious health challenge in the UK. The data does seem to suggest that mental wellbeing improves with age, which is consistent with research literature in psychology suggesting that as we age, we develop more adaptive ways to maintain a balanced view of life. It is important to remember that depression, stress, and mental health problems can affect anyone at any age and that accessible support for all ages is absolutely vital."
Rates of suspected depression shot up in Britain since Covid-19 from 10% prevalence according to the ONS survey covering July 2019 to March 2020. It peaked at around 23% in January to March 2021 at the height of the pandemic and had then started to drop off. The survey from July to August 2021 saw it drop to 17% and by September October 2022 it had fallen again to 16%. The latest national poll shows the first rise since the pandemic.
To identify depression the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ8) was devised by experts at Columbia University in the US and pharmaceutical firm Pfizer. Participants answer eight questions such as: 'Over the last two weeks, how often have you been bothered by having little interest or pleasure in doing things?'
The answers ranged from zero (Not at all) to three (Nearly every day). A "depression score" is then produced from zero to 24 and the higher the score, the greater the severity of depressive symptoms. Anything over ten indicates 'moderate to severe depressive symptoms', or suspected depression.

Brian Dow, deputy chief executive of Rethink Mental Illness, said: "These figures paint a sobering picture of the nation's mental health, with nearly one in five adults now experiencing moderate to severe depressive symptoms, and even higher rates among young people. It is deeply concerning that over a quarter of 16 to 29-year-olds are struggling to this extent, and that financial pressures and social isolation are compounding these challenges.
"While it is encouraging that most people are taking steps to look after their wellbeing, such as spending time outdoors or with loved ones, we cannot rely on individual action alone to address what is clearly a systemic issue. The fact that people experiencing depressive symptoms are less likely to feel trust, safety or belonging in their communities shows just how vital it is to build environments that foster connection, security and support.
"We urgently need targeted investment in mental health services and a cross-government approach that tackles the root causes of mental illness. Only then can we begin to reverse these worrying trends and create a mentally healthier nation for everyone."
Prof Kamaldeep Bhui, Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at Oxford University, said: "Levels of depressive symptoms overall have remained stable, which is reassuring and suggesting these have not increased despite political/social and financial issues. Young adults are experiencing more depressive symptoms than older adults, perhaps related to loneliness, but also due to worries about the social political contexts, the cost of living, financial issues and their health.
"People with depressive symptoms worried more about these issues, and were less trusting of others, perhaps leading to isolation, loneliness, and reticence about help seeking and any information they received. The reasons older people experience less depressive symptoms warrants some investigation, although one could speculate they may be more financial and socially stable, with choice and opportunities that younger people do not have.
"Activities people found helpful for wellbeing were spending time outdoors, time with family and friends, being physically active and taking a balanced diet."

Tiny articles of pollen can stick to everything including your hair and clothes and once it gets inside your home it can settle on sofas, carpets, and bedding. How to know if you have Hay Fever Hay Fever is usually worse between late March and September, especially when it's warm, humid and windy. This is when the pollen count is at its highest. Hay Fever can last for weeks or months, unlike a cold, which usually goes away after one to two weeks. Typical symptoms include: Frequent sneezing Runny or blocked nose Itchy, red or watery eyes (allergic conjunctivitis) An itchy throat, mouth, nose and ears Cough, caused by postnasal drip (mucus dripping down the throat from the back of the nose) Less commonly, you may also experience: The loss of your sense of smell (anosmia) Facial pain (caused by blocked sinuses) Headaches Earache Tiredness and fatigue If you have asthma, your asthma symptoms may get worse when you have hay fever. Keep your head elevated Symptoms associated with an allergy are usually worse at night. This is because when we lie down, the mucus cannot drain in the same way it would when gravity is helping, leading to disturbed breathing or a cough caused by a post-nasal drip. For this reason, you should aim to keep your head slightly elevated at night if you are struggling with allergies. This will bring gravity back into the mix, allowing excess mucus to drain and not pool and lessening the irritation. Shower before bed Taking a shower before bed will wash away any pollen that may have clung to your skin and hair from outside. Instead of transferring this onto your bed linen, make a habit of washing yourself before bed. This is also a great tip for when we still start to experience warmer evenings again as a cool, not cold, shower will help to lower your body temperature making it easier to drift off to sleep. Keep windows closed during the day It might be tempting to open the window a fraction to let some fresh air in on a sunny spring day, however, if you're a hay fever sufferer, you try to keep your windows and doors closed to prevent pollen from entering your home. Having your windows open during the day will allow pollen particles to blow in and settle on your clothes, bedding and other soft furnishings within your room, making your symptoms much worse when it comes to bedtime. Invest in an air purifier Investing in an air purifier is useful for those with hay fever as it will remove pollen and dust particles from the air that trigger your symptoms. This can be extremely beneficial for clearing your sinuses, which should allow you to fall asleep quicker and more comfortably as a result. Measles warning to holidaymakers as outbreaks surge in major tourist hotspots
The UK Health Security Agency has recorded outbreaks of the infectious disease in England, while also warning which countries in Europe and Asia have highest rates of measles A measles outbreak is seeing over 100 new confirmed cases a month mainly in young children. The UK Health Security Agency warns measles is surging in a host of popular holiday destinations abroad and Brits could bring infections home with them. In Europe outbreaks are being recorded in countries including France, Italy, Spain, Germany and Romania. Globally countries with the highest rates of measles are Pakistan, India, Thailand, Indonesia and Nigeria. Measles causes a fever and itchy spots but in rare cases can lead to death or disabilities such as blindness, deafness and lifelong thinking problems caused by dangerous swelling of the brain. Dr Vanessa Saliba, Consultant Epidemiologist at the UK Health Security Agency, said: 'It's essential that everyone, particularly parents of young children, check all family members are up to date with two MMR doses, especially if you are travelling this summer for holidays or visiting family. Measles cases are picking up again in England and outbreaks are happening in Europe and many countries with close links to the UK. 'Measles spreads very easily and can be a nasty disease, leading to complications like ear and chest infections and inflammation of the brain with some children tragically ending up in hospital and suffering life-long consequences. Nobody wants this for their child and it's not something you want to experience when away on holiday.' Measles is one of the most highly infectious diseases and spreads rapidly among those who are unvaccinated. Each infected person can pass the disease onto around 15 other unvaccinated people. Latest UKHSA data shows 109 confirmed measles cases in England in April and so far 86 have been recorded for May - however there is usually a data recording lag from infection and symptoms starting so health chiefs say this latest monthly total is likely to go up. So far in 2025 there have been 420 laboratory confirmed measles cases with two thirds being in children under 10. The real number of cases is thought to be much higher. It comes after 2024 saw the biggest measles outbreak in Britain for decades and one death and the UKHSA warns cases could increase sharply again this summer. Coverage of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine started to decline following a 1998 report by Andrew Wakefield which falsely linked the jab with autism. Even though the claim was discredited, and Wakefield struck off the medical register, the vaccination programme took years to recover. Now MMR vaccine coverage is the lowest it has been for more than a decade, with around 83.9% of youngsters having the jab. The World Health Organisation says 95% should have both doses to maintain herd immunity. Dr Amanda Doyle, National Director for Primary Care and Community Services at NHS England, said: 'Tens of thousands of additional MMR vaccinations were delivered following NHS action last year to protect children against measles, mumps and rubella, and the recent increase in cases seen in England and Europe should act as an important reminder to ensure your child is protected. 'Too many babies and young children are still not protected against the diseases, which are contagious infections that spread very easily and can cause serious health problems. MMR jabs are provided free as part of the NHS routine immunisation programme – and I would encourage all parents to act on invites or check vaccination records if they think they may have missed their child's vaccination.' The NHS says measles usually starts with cold-like symptoms, followed by a rash a few days later. Some people may also get small spots in their mouth. The first symptoms of measles include a high temperature, a runny or blocked nose, sneezing, a cough as well as red, sore, watery eyes. The first MMR vaccine is offered to infants when they turn one and the second dose to pre-school children when they are around three years and four months old. Around 99% of those who have two doses will be protected against measles and rubella. Although mumps protection is slightly lower, cases in vaccinated people are much less severe. Dr Saliba added: 'The MMR vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and your family from measles. Babies under the age of one and some people who have weakened immune systems can't have the vaccine and are at risk of more serious complications if they get measles. They rely on the rest of us getting the vaccine to protect them. 'It is never too late to catch up, if you're not sure if any of your family are up to date, check their Red Book or contact your GP practice. Don't put it off and regret it later.'
