Chery Automobile, a major Chinese carmaker, has introduced Mornine, a humanoid robot designed to work in car dealerships. Mornine is more than just a digital character.
She is a physical robot who can explain vehicle specifications, lead showroom tours, serve refreshments, and communicate in multiple languages. Chery's Mornine is already working as an "Intelligent Sales Consultant" at a dealership in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and the company plans to deliver 220 units to dealers worldwide this year. Mornine's design combines advanced robotics with a friendly digital persona, aiming to connect with younger, tech-savvy customers.
Mornine is powered by Chery's expertise in autonomous driving and artificial intelligence. The robot uses a multimodal sensing model to recognize gestures, voice commands, and environmental cues. Her hands are dexterous enough to serve drinks, and she can walk upright to guide customers around the showroom. Deepseek's large language models give Mornine the ability to understand natural language and provide personalized answers, which makes interactions feel more natural and engaging.
Chery envisions Mornine moving beyond car sales. Thanks to her flexible design and advanced artificial intelligence, the robot could one day work in malls, cinemas, exhibitions, and even homes or eldercare facilities. The company sees Mornine as a step toward a future where artificial intelligence is always by your side, with robots acting as daily companions and assistants.
Chery believes that humanoid robots will become as important as vehicles in the coming years. Goods brought into the US plunged by 20% in April, recording their largest ever monthly drop in the face of a wave of tariffs unleashed by US President Donald Trump. The retreat reflects the abrupt hit to trade, after firms had rushed products into the country earlier this year to try to get ahead of new taxes on imports Trump had promised. US purchases from major trade partners such as Canada and China fell to their lowest levels since 2021 and 2020 respectively, the Commerce Department said. The collapse helped to cut the US trade deficit - the gap between exports and imports - in goods by almost half, a record decline, according to the report. "The April trade report indicates the impact from tariffs has well and truly arrived," said Oxford Economics, while noting that the latest figures should be interpreted with caution, given the surge in activity earlier this year. Since re-entering office in January, Trump has raised import taxes on specific items such as foreign steel, aluminium and cars and imposed a blanket 10% levy on most goods from trading partners around the world. He had briefly targeted some countries' exports with even higher duties, only to suspend those measures for 90 days to allow for talks. Trump has said the moves are intended to rebuild manufacturing at home and strengthen its hand in trade negotiations. White House officials are now engaged in intense talks aimed at striking deals before that 90-day deadline expires next month. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Trump spoke by phone on Thursday to try to reach a breakthrough in those negotiations, as the fragile truce between the two sides showed signs of deteriorating. In a social media post, Trump said it had been a "very good phone call" focused on trade and that teams from the two sides would be meeting again shortly. State media in China reported that they had agreed to further talks and extended an invitation of a visit to Trump. Trump's barrage of tariffs have brought the average effective tariff rate in the US to the highest level since the 1930s, according to analysts. After a surge in activity earlier this year, the abrupt changes have led to a sharp slowdown in trade as firms weigh how to respond. In Mexico, the steel industry said its exports to the US had been cut in half last month. In Canada, the trade deficit hit an all-time high last month, widening to C$7.1bn, as exports to the US shrank for a third month in a row. Thursday's report from the US Commerce Department showed few categories of products were unaffected by the changes. Imports of passenger cars dropped by a third from March to April. Pharmaceutical products were hit and imports of most consumer goods also fell, including cell phones, artwork, furniture, toys and apparel. What tariffs has Trump announced and why? With another extension deadline in two weeks, the social media platform's future lies in the hands of President Donald Trump. In January, TikTok went dark for 12 hours in the United States when China-based ByteDance failed to divest the app's U.S. assets, as required by law. Since coming into office on Jan. 20, Trump issued two executive orders to extend the ban's deadline, hoping to acquire the short-form video app used by 170 million Americans. But so far, a deal has yet to be struck. The next deadline is June 19. A plan had been in the works that would spin off TikTok's American operation into a new firm owned and operated by U.S. investors, but was put on hold, according to Reuters, after China would not approve it following Trump's announcements of steep tariffs on its goods. During an NBC News interview in May, Trump said he would extend the deadline a third time if a deal isn't made by the June 19 deadline. 'I'd like to see it done,' Trump said during the interview. The president added that he has a 'little sweet spot' in his heart for TikTok, which he claims helped him win votes during the 2024 presidential election. 'It'll be protected. It'll be very strongly protected. But if it needs an extension, I would be willing to give it an extension.' The White House declined to comment about a potential TikTok sale. Will TikTok get banned on June 19? It is unclear. If ByteDance does not divest TikTok by Thursday, June 19, the platform could be banned in the United States again. However, Trump has said that if the sale isn't finalized in time, he will extend the deadline again. How many times is Trump allowed to extend the TikTok ban? This, too, is unclear. Under federal legislation that put the TikTok ban in place, the president can implement a 90-day extension on the deadline to sell. But Trump didn't take this route in January or April. Instead, he signed executive orders delaying the ban by 75 days. If Trump wishes to sign another executive order ahead of the June 19 deadline, he can. While it's within Trump's discretion to sign executive orders to delay the ban, there may be a time when Congress sees it fit to pass a law ordering a firm deadline, John Acevedo, Emory University School of Law professor, told Spectrum News in April. But just because the executive orders are within Trump's authority doesn't mean everyone is happy with his decisions. 'The deadline for Trump to follow the law passed 135 days ago. It is shocking that a bipartisan-backed law, signed by the former president and upheld by the Supreme Court, is being treated like a mere suggestion by the White House,' said Stephen Kent, Consumer Choice Center media director, in a news release. ByteDance has denied these claims, which remain unsubstantiated. However, ByteDance did not divest in time. In January, TikTok went dark for a little more than 12 hours in the U.S. after the app was effectively banned. U.S. internet hosting services made TikTok unavailable to access, and app stores removed the app for download. During the short-lived shutdown, Trump promised internet hosting services and app stores that they could restore TikTok and not face legal penalties. Under the federal legislation, companies could be fined $5,000 per user they help access TikTok. For companies like Google and Apple, this could mean a $5,000 fine for each user who downloads or updates TikTok. Internet hosting services like Oracle didn't waste time rebooting the app, but it wasn't until Feb. 13 that TikTok became available again in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Trump touts 'very positive' breakthrough with Xi after slamming China for trade violation
President Donald Trump spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping Thursday in a lengthy call amid economic and national security friction regarding trade between Washington and Beijing. "I just concluded a very good phone call with President Xi, of China, discussing some of the intricacies of our recently made, and agreed to, Trade Deal," Trump said in a Thursday Truth Social post. "The call lasted approximately one and a half hours, and resulted in a very positive conclusion for both Countries." Trump said the conversation focused "almost entirely" on trade, and that Xi invited the U.S. president and first lady Melania Trump to visit China. Trump also said he extended an invitation to Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan. Chinese media first reported the call between the two leaders Thursday, and claimed that the call occurred per Trump's request. White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett had told ABC News Sunday that Trump was expected to talk with the Chinese president this week. The call comes nearly a week after Trump condemned China for violating an initial trade agreement that the U.S. and China hashed out in May, and a day after Trump said Xi was "extremely hard to make a deal with" in a Truth Social post. The negotiations led both countries to agree that the U.S. would ramp down its tariffs against Chinese imports from 145% to 30%, and China would cut its tariffs against U.S. imports from 125% to 10%. But Trump accused China on Friday of not holding up its end of the bargain, although he refrained from disclosing specifics. "The bad news is that China, perhaps not surprisingly to some, HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US," Trump said in a social media post Friday. "So much for being Mr. NICE GUY!" U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Friday in an interview with CNBC that China had failed to lift its non-tariff barriers, as outlined in the deal. "The United States did exactly what it was supposed to do, and the Chinese are slow-rolling their compliance, which is completely unacceptable and has to be addressed," Greer said Friday. Meanwhile, China pressed the U.S. to reverse course and address its own mistakes. "China once again urges the US to immediately correct its erroneous actions, cease discriminatory restrictions against China and jointly uphold the consensus reached at the high-level talks in Geneva," Chinese embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu said in a Friday statement. Meanwhile, Trump's invitation to Xi and Peng to visit the U.S. comes as Trump's administration cracks down on student visa holders in the U.S. and as Trump has threatened to "aggressively" rescind visas of students from China.
