How 'tropical waves' carry confounding clues about huge hurricanes

Pull up the National Hurricane Center's daily map this week and you'll see that no tropical cyclone activity is expected within the next seven days as the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season kicks off on June 1.
Twenty years ago, this 7-day outlook might have been unthinkable, but with improvements in satellites and forecast technology, meteorologists now know more than ever about when and where storms form and move. Thanks to higher resolution satellites, hurricane researchers also know more about the weather patterns that move westward across the Atlantic and Caribbean that could eventually become tropical storms or cyclones.
Known as tropical waves, these patterns – found in the atmosphere above the surface and not in the ocean – have always moved across the Atlantic and around the globe. These waves are found in areas of low pressure above the surface in the atmosphere.
Forecasters are watching these waves more closely than ever and understand more about how some of them become the seeds of tropical storms and hurricanes, said Kelly Núñez Ocasio, assistant professor in the atmospheric sciences department at Texas A&M University.
As a result, the waves also catch the attention of casual observers who find their way to the page where the hurricane center's highly trained specialists present their discussion of what's happening across the Atlantic basin. When a tropical wave gets mentioned, there's no immediate cause for alarm or concern.
Most of the waves "aren't very noteworthy, and about half of them are almost imperceptible," said Chris Landsea, chief of the National Hurricane Center's tropical analysis and forecast branch. They're mostly found in the lower latitudes, along a band across the Caribbean south of the Florida Keys.
By themselves, the waves have little impact on states outside Florida to the north, he said. For example, 'the (waves) we're watching right now (on May 29, 2025) aren't going to be impacting the U.S. at all."
Still, it's "very important" for the hurricane center to track tropical waves, Landsea said.
Even without further development, tropical waves can impact local weather in Florida and the Caribbean by influencing thunderstorms and bringing gustier winds as they approach. The other reason to keep an eye on tropical waves is that some of the strongest that come off the African Coast tend to create the most dangerous hurricanes.
Roughly 80 tropical waves are found across the Atlantic basin in a given year, said Landsea, who has studied tropical waves for decades.
Between 40 and 60 of those emerge off the African Coast during the hurricane season that begins June 1 and ends December 1, said Núñez Ocasio. Fewer than two dozen of these waves become named tropical storms. Even fewer become hurricanes.
However, the waves are particularly important for forecasters to observe because "most of the hurricanes that get strongest originate from tropical waves," Landsea said. An estimated 85% of the most intense hurricanes – the Category 3's, 4's and 5's, with winds of 111 mph or more – get their start in the tropical waves that move off the African coast, he said.
To become a depression or storm, a tropical wave must encounter a perfect set of conditions in the surrounding ocean and atmosphere that include very warm ocean water, relatively moist air, and a potentially unstable atmosphere.

Researchers such as Núñez Ocasio are working to answer riddles such as what makes some hurricanes larger in size than others and why some waves form hurricanes and others do not. The more they learn, the more the information can be used to improve hurricane forecast models.
The stronger waves often begin over the high mountains of Ethiopia in eastern Africa, gathering strength, size and moisture from the monsoon as they move west, said Núñez Ocasio.
A lot of "very warm air" rises over the mountains in an area where the African easterly jet stream enters the region, she said. The resulting convection produces waves that interact with the West African monsoon and the wind energy in the jet, and by the time they reach the western coast, their structure is already more suitable to become a tropical depression, she said.
It's only been within the last few years, that researchers have been able to correlate the intensity of a wave coming off Africa with the intensity of any tropical depression it forms, she said. "Those waves that originate over the Ethiopian highlands are actually the ones more likely to become hurricanes."
Her research proved timely last summer, when an expected busy season kind of stalled out at one point in mid-summer. A very active monsoon ranged over Africa, so intense that it was flooding areas of the Sahara Desert where flooding hadn't been previously seen, she said. The tropical waves and the African jet were pushing farther north and not coming off the coast along the typical Atlantic hurricane track, she said.
That pattern may suggest a shift in the peak of Atlantic hurricane season in response to climate change, with waves forming and moving more slowly, and gathering more moisture, she said. "All the entire tropical atmosphere is changing .... Tropical waves are getting more intense with the changing climate."
Learning about potential tropical systems earlier than in the past is not a reason to worry, but it can be a reason to prepare early, she said. "It's about thinking twice, decision-making to safeguard life and property."

A New Kind of Concrete Can Grow and Repair Itself. How? It's Alive.

Concrete is one of the biggest greenhouse gas emitters in the world, so scientists are developing new strategies to mitigate its climate impact. One of those strategies is to create a concrete that 'self-heals,' and in a new study, scientists used synthetic lichen to patch cracks autonomously (meaning that outside nutrients don't need to be applied for the repair to take place. The lichen—actually a combination of cyanobacteria and fungi—can draw food from sunlight and the atmosphere while also using calcium ions to produce calcium carbonate, which is the same ultra-strong material found in seashells and millennia-old Roman concrete. The production of concrete, as well as the key ingredient—cement—is one of the leading generators of CO2 emissions on Earth, contributing to at least 8 percent of the world's global budget. So, it's no surprise that scientists and engineers are trying to figure out ways to lower this building material's impact. One solution is to not use it altogether—the creation of mass timber buildings in the U.S. has been rapidly increasing in recent years. Another is to devise some way to make concrete more sustainable, or even find ways for it to be a carbon negative building material. However, the area that's gotten the most attention in the past few decades is figuring out how to make concrete longer-lasting, and even better than the widely used ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). The most common method for increasing concrete's longevity is by ripping a page out of the Roman playbook and developing means for concrete to essentially 'self-heal.' The reason why the 2,000-year-old aqueducts throughout Italy don't look a day over 500 is because Romans used 'lime clasts' mixed in with concrete that essentially filled cracks before they formed. Now, scientists from Texas A&M University are investigating ways to pull off a similar trick using lichen. The results of the study were published in the journal Materials Today Communications. Of course, self-healing concrete isn't new—headlines have popped up for years touting new techniques for making concrete long lasting, and some have even used microbes. But the authors of this new study say they've stumbled upon a technique that improves on previous attempts in one major way. 'Microbe-mediated self-healing concrete has been extensively investigated for more than three decades' Congrui Grace Jin, senior author of the study from Texas A&M, said in a press statement, 'but it still suffers from one important limitation—none of the current self-healing approaches are fully autonomous since they require an external supply of nutrients for the healing agents to continuously produce repair materials.' Lichen, often found clinging to trees and rocks, is actually a complex symbiotic system filled with cyanobacteria, fungi, and algae. The researchers created a synthetic lichen that consisted of a cyanobacteria that can use sunlight (as well as elements from the atmosphere) as food, and some fungi that naturally produce materials that can seal cracks. Specifically, the fungi can pull in ionized calcium, which spurs the production of calcium carbonate—the ultra-hard material found in seashells and coral. (Calcium carbonate is actually the same material that made Rome's concrete extremely strong in antiquity.) In lab tests, the synthetic lichen was able to fill cracks—even in concrete—relying on just sunlight and air for food. Using this autonomous repair system can not only extend the life of concrete, but also cut down on repair costs. The authors are now testing whether this synthetic fungi could repair existing cracks as well. Challenges still remain for the widespread adoption of self-healing concrete. Right now, not many companies make the stuff, and it's still more expensive to produce that typical, run-of-the-mill concrete. Some experts say it could still be a decade before self-healing additives really take off. When that happens, though, the lichen will be ready. First Atlantic Storm of 2025 Could Form Within Days

A disturbance forming off the southeastern U.S. coast may become the storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. The National Hurricane Center posted an alert on Monday evening, warning of a "non-tropical area of low pressure" forecast to form within the next few days. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration anticipates an above-normal hurricane season this year, Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1 to and runs to November 30. "A non-tropical area of low pressure is forecast to form near or offshore of the southeastern U.S. coast within the next two to three days," the National Hurricane Center said in a post on X. "The system has a low chance of formation later this week while moving northeastward at 10 to 15 mph," it added. There is a 10 percent chance a cyclone will form within the next seven days and a near-0 percent change it will form in 48 hours, according to the center's seven-day graphical tropical weather outlook. Even if the disturbance does not develop into a tropical storm, it could still bring increased rainfall, surf, or gusty winds to parts of the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic coasts later this week. The World Meteorological Organization assigns names to Atlantic tropical cyclones on a six-year rotating basis. There can be a change to the list if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name on another would be inappropriate. As the hurricane season gets underway, forecasters and emergency management officials are urging residents across coastal states to begin preparations early, even for systems with low development probabilities. Saturday, June 1 marked the official start of hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean, and this year is forecasted to see an above-average number of storms. As of June 2, the National Hurricane Center has highlighted an area off of the southeast coast of Florida, and the U.S., for tropical cyclone activity. The storm system currently has a low chance of developing, however, rain and thunderstorms are expected to impact Florida in the following days. The National Hurricane Center is also monitoring a tropical wave off the cost of Africa, south of Cabo Verde, that's moving west at 17 mph. Dust from the Sahara is currently being carried westward across the Atlantic Ocean, and strong winds can transport this dust further to the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, according to the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality. This dust can help prevent tropical storms from developing or strengthening. In June, tropical storms typically develop close to the U.S., off of the southeast coast, in the Gulf Coast or in the Caribbean. Later in the season, storms usually form out of tropical waves moving off the coast of Africa, The Palm Beach Post reported. Early tropical storm activity can indicate an active hurricane season, although, this is not a definitive predictor. While early activity can suggest a more active season, it's possible that an active June and July can be followed by a quieter year, says the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Peak hurricane activity is usually from mid-August until mid-October and, in some cases, hurricane season may have a quiet start in June and July, but see an increase of activity later in the season, says the NOAA. The NOAA has predicted this hurricane season to be above-normal, citing a number of factors for an above-average season, including continued ENSO-neutral conditions, warmer-than-average ocean temperatures, weak wind shear and the potential for higher activity from the West African Monsoon.
