Outrage as Joslin Smith's mom Kelly 'finds love' in prison
Kelly Smith – the mother of missing girl Joslin Smith – has reportedly found love whilst in prison, and South Africans are engaged.
Earlier this month, the Saldanha Bay woman and her former partner, Jacquin 'Boeta' Appollis, and pal Steveno van Rhyn were sentenced to life for trafficking and kidnapping.
Joslin disappeared on 19 February 2024. She has yet to be found.
According to various social media users, reports have emerged that Kelly Smith has allegedly found love with a man behind bars.
The rumoured prison fling developed whilst Kelly and the man were being held in police custody cells in Langebaan. At the time, Kelly was attending her trial for trafficking and kidnapping her daughter, Joslin Smith, at the Saldanha Bay Multipurpose Centre, sitting under the Western Cape High Court.
She is now serving her time in Pollsmoor Prison, where she is likely to appeal her sentence.
Kelly's rumoured partner is facing charges of business robbery.
On social media, content creators were shocked at the revelation.
TikToker Bleskop Brille shared: 'We do not want to know about Kelly's love life, true or not. We want the truth about Joslin!
Another, Ash Baby, posted: 'Kelly is a true narcissist, like Judge Nathan Erasmus said. She will manipulate everyone and everything to get her way.'
A third, Facebook user 'Coloured Girls Rock,' posted: 'Kelly has a new boyfriend, and she's in jail, sending love letters to some dude. I don't even know if she's got perfume to spray on the envelope. She shouldn't be allowed to even speak to people till she tells us where Joslin is.' @bleskopbrille We don't want to know about Kelly's love life! True or not! We want the truth of Joslin! Boeta has no love lost now if this is true, so he can talk and say what really happened to Joslin Smith!! #bleskopbrille #whatdoyouthink #kellysmith #joslinsmith #missing #missingchildren #humantrafficking #colouredpeople #afrikaanstiktoks #tiktoksouthafrica #fyp #fypp #trendingontiktok #goviral #foryourpagetiktok ♬ original sound – Bleskop brille
Others left comments like:
'Kelly can't even provide for or protect her kids, but she can find love. For what – to have more kids?'
'Kelly is living her best life in prison.'
'She must stay infamous – where is Joslin?
At the time of her arrest, Kelly Smith was in a relationship with fellow convicted trafficker, Jacquin 'Boeta Appollis', who was portrayed as a 'father figure' to Joslin Smith.
The missing girl's biological father is Jose Emke, who reportedly ended their 'abusive' relationship.
It's unclear when Kelly and Boeta parted ways. However, reports have indicated that Kelly miscarried Boeta's baby whilst being held in police custody in Pollsmoor Prison last year.

Strengthening the Global Fight Against Corruption
Brazil, Brasilia – The 2nd G20 Anti-Corruption Working Group (ACWG) under the South African Presidency convened in Brasilia from June 9 to 12, 2025, uniting delegates to address critical issues in preventing and combating corruption. Co-Chaired by South Africa and Brazil, the meeting aimed to reinforce the Working Group's priorities to strengthen the public sector by promoting transparency, integrity, and accountability, increasing the efficiency of asset recovery measures, enhancing participation from the public sector, private sector, civil society, and academia, and improving whistleblower protection mechanisms. The South African Ambassador to Brazil, Mr. Vusi Mavimbela, delivered the opening remarks during the inaugural session. He highlighted the importance of international collaboration in the fight against corruption and stressed South Africa's dedication to advancing collective goals, stating, 'Through our G20 Presidency theme, 'Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability', we reaffirm our commitment to advancing collective efforts toward inclusive global economic growth and sustainable development.' Brazil's Minister of State for the Office of the Comptroller General, H.E. Mr. Vinícius Marques de Carvalho, delivered the keynote address, stressing the significance of inclusive approaches in anti-corruption efforts. He underscored the complex nature of corruption, requiring diverse perspectives and expertise. H.E. Carvalho called for a multi-agency strategy, urging the involvement of civil society, academia, and the private sector in shaping effective anti-corruption policies. At the heart of the meeting were the discussions of the draft G20 High-Level Principles on the Management of Seized and Confiscated Assets. These draft principles aim to provide a framework for G20 countries to manage seized assets, closing gaps identified by the ACWG to strengthen asset recovery. The Group also considered the Zero Draft Ministerial Declaration, encapsulating the commitment of G20 countries to address corruption through prevention. This draft will be presented for adoption at the Ministerial Meeting in October 2025. In addition to the main sessions, a side event was held on measuring integrity in public procurement, exploring challenges in quantifying corruption, and the necessity for evidence-based methodologies, co-hosted by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The UNDP informed that it is establishing a framework for measuring integrity, collecting data from 60 countries by the end of 2025. This initiative aims to provide objective tools to gauge the effectiveness of anti-corruption measures. Another side event was held to address the preventive dimension in the fight against corruption and new forms of organised crime, co-hosted by EL PACTO 2.0, a partnership with the European Union focused on justice and security. The G20 ACWG and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Working Group on Bribery held a joint meeting aimed at supporting the shared commitment to combating the bribery of foreign public officials in international transactions. The 2nd G20 ACWG l Meeting provided an opportunity for delegates to exchange views, share experiences, and deepen their understanding of the evolving challenges and opportunities in the fight against corruption through the lens of the Presidency's theme of solidarity, equality, and sustainability. The Working Group acknowledged that there remains considerable work ahead to fully realise the deliverables committed to at the start of the year, including timely responses to the questionnaires, substantive inputs toward the draft Ministerial Declaration, and the High-Level Principles on the Management of Seized and Confiscated Assets. Through these efforts, the G20 seeks to instil confidence in its commitment to combating corruption and promoting sustainable development, ensuring a brighter future for all. As South Africa and Brazil lead this charge, the hope is that the momentum generated from this meeting will translate into tangible actions that resonate beyond borders, creating a global environment where corruption has no place. Remember this? Thabo Bester's birthday party had Mzansi fooled
Thabo Bester is celebrating his 39th birthday on Friday, the 13th, an unlucky date on the calendar. Like he did last year, the convicted rapist, murderer, and fraudster is being kept in confinement at the Kgosi Mampuru prison. Just a few years ago, Thabo fooled much of Mzansi with his fraudulent business schemes and countless aliases. He even made a 'guest appearance' at a star-studded party, where the crowd sang him happy birthday! He would later break out of prison to go on the run, 'Bonnie and Clyde' style, with his rumoured girlfriend, Dr Nandipha Magudumana. The former couple and seven others are facing a slew of charges in a trial set to begin next month. Thabo Bester's brazen criminal spree has involved him using multiple fake identities and fronting numerous fraudulent businesses. In 2018, Bester – once dubbed the 'Facebook Rapist' – pulled a fast one on many South Africans, including celebrities, in an event that coincidentally took place on his birthday. With the help of an alleged accomplice, Bester registered an event and production company called 21st Century Media. At the time, Bester was imprisoned in Magaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein after being convicted of rape and murder in 2012. Bester – allegedly using the alias Tom Motsepe – told the public that he was based in New York. He also claimed that he was related to SA billionaire Patrice Motsepe. The company held a grand launch party at the Hilton Hotel in Sandton on 13 June 2018 – Bester's real birthday – attended by celebs like Amanda du Pont and Yvonne Chaka Chaka. Leading ladies Nomzamo Mbatha and Thabile Ngwato were MCs of the glamorous black-tie event. In a video clip that has since gone viral, Nomzamo and Thabile sing 'Happy Birthday' to 'Tom,' who is seen laughing via a video link. Take a look… Fast forward to the present, Thabo Bester, Nandipha Magudumana, and seven others are facing charges relating to a wild criminal spree, which includes orchestrating a prison escape, running fraudulent businesses, and violating multiple bodies. Their trial is expected to take place on 21 July at the Bloemfontein High Court. However, ongoing legal proceedings, such as Magudumana's bid to the Constitutional Court to have her arrest and deportation declared unlawful, could possibly delay the trial again. Nandipha Magudumana and Thabo Bester's trial will begin next month. Images via Showmax/ Instagram: @drnandipha In 2022, Thabo Bester faked his death and escaped prison with the help of prison officials and his alleged girlfriend, Nandipha Magudumana. Bester took refuge in Magudumana's Hyde Park home, where he managed to fly under the radar. A few weeks later, he was photographed shopping in a Woolworths store in Sandton. The photo would only make headlines months later when his mysterious disappearance was finally investigated. In 2023, the couple were arrested after they fled the country to Tanzania. Thabo Bester is currently under lock and key at the Kgosi Mampuru prison in Pretoria. Bester is being kept at the C-Max prison – a maximum security division – which will afford him the following… 24-hour surveillance Round-the-clock contact with 'selected high trade correctional officers.' Assurance that he will not be able to harm himself or others Bester has previously been escorted to the prison in a police Nyala – a bullet-proof vehicle of maximum security. SANDF troops return home from DRC mission
South African Minister of Defence Angie Motshekga leaves after conducting a press conference at Tembe Military Base prior to the expected arrival of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers following their deployment to the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo as part of the Southern African Development Community Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC), in Bloemfontein. A first contingent of South African troops repatriated from the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo arrived in Pretoria Friday night, the defence ministry said. Videos shared by the ministry showed soldiers in uniform dancing and chanting on arrival at the Waterkloof airforce base in the capital Pretoria, welcomed by airbase staff with cheers and fist-bumps. The troops were deployed under a Southern African Development Community (SADC) mission sent to the war-torn country in December 2023 to help restore peace and security in the region. But the SADC said in March it would end its military mission in the mineral-rich area after 17 of its soldiers were killed. Earlier this year, fighting in the region erupted once more when the Rwandan-backed M23 force seized large swathes of DRC's north and south Kivu provinces -- both of which border Rwanda.
