Orascom Construction to establish new campus at American University in Cairo
Egypt - Orascom Construction will build the new 'Campus 2026' in line with expansion plans at The American University in Cairo (AUC), according to a statement.
The project spans around 65 feddans, aiming to enhance student experience and anchoring AUC's positioning as a premier institution for education and research in the region.
The development scheme includes three key developments, namely the NextGen Student and Learning Living Spaces, the Technology, Research and Innovation (TRI) Lab Building, and the Extended Education Hub.
The construction phase will include five state-of-the-art buildings, an underground service tunnel, and infrastructure and landscaping works.
This development fosters Orascom Construction's long track record in building advanced sustainable projects across various sectors including airports, museums, hospitals and high-profile buildings in Egypt and the USA.

Doosan Enerbility wins $248mln equipment contract for two Saudi power projects
South Korean power equipment giant Doosan Enerbility has secured contracts valued at approximately 340 billion South Korean won ($248 million) to supply steam turbines and generators for two combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant expansion projects in Saudi Arabia. The contracts for Ghazlan 2 and Hajjar expansion projects were awarded by the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) consortium comprising Spain's Técnicas Reunidas and Egypt's Orascom Construction, according to a press statement issued by the company. Both power plants are designed with a total capacity of 2,900 megawatts (MW) and are scheduled for phased completion by 2028. Under the agreement, Doosan will deliver two sets of steam turbine and generator packages—rated at 650MW and 540MW—for each project, the statement noted. Kenya pledges to accelerate efforts to boost intra-African trade
Kenya is working towards fast-tracking implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to unlock opportunities for businesses in the country across the continent. Speaking during the Kenya IATF2025 Business Roadshow event, Kenya's Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry, Hon. Lee Kinyanjui said the government is positioning and consolidating Kenya as a Trade, industrial and innovation hub to strategically tap into trade and investment opportunities presented by AfCFTA. 'The solutions to Africa's problems lie with Africans. It is essential for countries within the continent to strengthen intra-African trade. The IATF 2025 offers a vital platform to advance the AfCFTA agenda. With a well-educated population, abundant resources, and banks ready to finance investment, Africa has what it takes to elevate itself to the next level.,' the Cabinet Secretary said. The Kenya IATF2025 Business Roadshow attracted over 200 members of Kenya's business community, including buyers, creatives, automotive sector players, policymakers and investors together with executives and officials of African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and African Union Commission (AUC). It focused on exploring ways of promoting intra-African trade. The theme was Harnessing Regional and Continental Value Chains: Accelerating Africa's Industrialisation and Global Competitiveness under the AfCFTA. Harnessing regional and continental value chains under the AfCFTA is crucial for Africa's industrial growth and global competitiveness. By creating a large, integrated market, the AfCFTA encourages countries to tap into the continental market by scaling up productive capacity and add value to products, create an enabling environment, attracting investment and creating jobs. This boosts economic diversification, expand productive base, and supports Africa's vision for sustainable and inclusive development. The roadshow is one of the five in the series of planned for Nairobi, Accra, Johannesburg, Lagos and Algiers ahead of the fourth edition of the biennial Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF2025) that will be held in Algiers, Algeria from 4 – 10 September 2025 under the theme Gateway to New Opportunities. IATF is Africa's premier trade and investment event that serves as a crucial platform for fostering economic growth, collaboration, and innovation across the continent. Over the years, the IATF has established a track record as the premier African trade and investment platform and has achieved significant milestones since it was established in 2018 as an instrument to implement the AfCFTA Agreement. Hosted by the Government of Algeria and promoted by Afreximbank, in collaboration with the African Union Commission and the AfCFTA Secretariat, the IATF2025 event will provide businesses from Africa and beyond with a platform to showcase their goods and services and exchange trade and investment information. Addressing the forum, Afreximbank's Executive Vice President, Global Trade Bank, Mr. Haytham Elmaayergi said: 'One of the key objectives of the IATF is to address access to trade and market information for intra-African trade to take place. For instance, as a result of a lack of information on African production and supply, countries like Tunisia, Morocco and South Africa import in excess of around US$400 million worth of leather products, mainly from Europe and South America, while countries like Ethiopia, Kenya, and Sudan—which have the supply capacity to meet a substantial part of this demand—continue to export their leather products to markets in Europe and Asia.' 'Kenya has rapidly emerged as a major force in digitalisation and innovation, both within the region and across Africa. The IATF presents a great opportunity for Kenyan Fintech companies, mobile money innovators and other technology companies to come together and showcase their ingenuity to diverse sectors on the continent. It could potentially help them scale beyond the Kenyan borders as well as attract investment to their respective businesses.' added Mr. Elmaayergi. Mr Elmaayergi made a clarion call for businesses, public and private sector in Kenya to participate and showcase their goods and services in IATF2025, where more than 2,000 exhibitors, including businesses from the African continent and globally, will exchange trade, market and investment information and showcase their goods and services to over 35,000 visitors and buyers from more than 140 countries. This is projected to translate into over US$44 billion in trade and investment deals. IATF is a platform for boosting trade and investment in Africa. In the last three editions of IATF, over $100 billion in trade and investment deals have been closed cumulatively with over 70,000 visitors and more than 4,500 exhibitors participating. Some of the activities lined up for the week-long IATF2025 include a trade exhibition by countries and businesses; the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) programme with a dedicated exhibition and summit on fashion, music, film, arts and craft, sports, literature, gastronomy and culinary arts; a four-day Trade and Investment Forum featuring leading African and international speakers; and the Africa Automotive Show for auto manufacturers, assemblers, original equipment manufacturers and component suppliers. African Union's 50th Permanent Representatives' Committee Session Begins, Setting Stage for Key Continental Priorities
The 50th Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives' Committee (PRC) kicked off on 9 June 2025, ahead of the 47th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council and the 7th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting (MYCM) between the African Union, the Regional Economic Communities and the Regional Mechanisms, scheduled to take place on 10- 13 July 2025, in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. In her opening remarks delivered on behalf of AU Commission Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Deputy Chairperson H.E. Selma Malika Haddadi emphasized the new leadership's dedication to enhancing collaboration with Member States, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and partners to propel Africa's integration, peace, and development forward. 'Our collective resolve must translate into tangible progress—on financing, integration, and justice. Africa's future depends on it,' stated H.E. Haddadi. Amb. Haddadi underscored the new AUC leadership's key priorities, which include: Enhanced Coordination and Efficiency: The AU Commission (AUC) aims to streamline workflows, align strategic priorities with Agenda 2063, and improve synergies between AU organs. A proposed PRC-AUC retreat later this year aims to foster deeper dialogue on institutional reforms. Financial Sustainability: Amb. Haddadi emphasized the urgent need to address the AU's budgetary constraints, noting that only 17 Member States have implemented the 0.2% import levy (Kigali Decision). She called for collective action to meet the Johannesburg targets and reduce reliance on external funding. Justice and Reparations: The 2025 AU theme, Justice and Reparations for Africans and People of African Descent, was emphasized as a cornerstone for addressing historical injustices and restoring dignity through global advocacy and policy action. Upcoming Engagements: The AUC will actively support high-level meetings, including the Ministerial Meeting on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) Summit, to advance continental priorities. The AUC Deputy Chairperson noted that the PRC will discuss key issues, among which are: the Report of the sub-committee on budget that includes the 2026 budget of the Union; Partnerships and the need to develop a strategy for all partnerships; and the Mid-term evaluation of the theme of the year 2025. H.E. Selma Malika Haddadi concluded by reaffirming the AUC's unwavering support for the PRC's work and urged fruitful deliberations ahead of the July Executive Council meeting. On his part, H.E. Amb. Prof. Miguel Bembe, Ambassador of the Republic of Angola to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union and Chairperson of the Permanent Representatives' Committee, in his opening speech, emphasized that the Permanent Representatives' Committee represents one of the strong pillars of the African Union and the guardian of political and technical consistency between high-level decision-making and the everyday realities of implementation in our Member States. 'It is our responsibility to ensure that processes are transparent, that methods are effective, and that outcomes reflect the spirit of Agenda 2063, 'The Africa We Want.' Our collective action must be guided by visionary pragmatism—one that addresses the urgencies of the present while courageously projecting solutions for the future,' said H.E. Amb. The ambassadors will deliberate on different reports including: the activities of the PRC Sub-Committees; Reports of the AU Commission; the mid-term activity report of the theme of the year 2025 on Justice and Reparations for Africans and People of African Descent, and other reports from AU Organs and the AU Specialized Agencies, before adopting their report as well as the draft decisions of the 47th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council.
