I am not a dictator, action on Sabah mining scandal must follow due process, says Anwar

Malay Mail5 days ago

PENAMPANG, May 30 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has said he was not at liberty to take action on those involved in the Sabah mining scandal without proof of wrongdoing.
Anwar said that the viral videos needed to be investigated thoroughly and until then, he would not be making any 'dictator' approaches such as those seen in the past.
'So I want to explain so that everyone understands — I do not want to hold a government position just to protect anyone. Some people say 'the Prime Minister must act', 'the Prime Minister is not firm', 'the Prime Minister talks about anti-corruption but allows corruption...'
'This Prime Minister is not a dictator; I follow the law, I have to go through the process, I cannot just arrest people like that,' he said during his speech at the Opening Ceremony of the Sabah State Level Kaamatan Festival 2025 at the Hongkod Koisaan Hall, Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) here today.
He said he would not use his position as Prime Minister to protect any party who was involved in wrong doing, including whistleblowers, but instead leave it up to the enforcers to carry out their duties according to the law.

China slams US ‘bullying' over new chip export controls

China accused the US of abusing export controls to suppress and restrict access to high-tech semiconductors and supply chains. (Huawei pic) BEIJING : Beijing condemned on Wednesday new US chip export controls as 'bullying', warning it would take steps against measures aimed at restricting Chinese access to high-tech semiconductors and supply chains. 'The US measures are typical unilateral bullying and protectionism, which seriously undermine the stability of the global semiconductor industry chain and supply chain,' Beijing's commerce ministry said in a statement. Washington last week unveiled fresh guidelines warning firms that using Chinese-made high-tech AI semiconductors, most notably tech giant Huawei's Ascend chips, would put them at risk of violating US export controls. The commerce department said its policy was aimed at sharing American AI technology 'with trusted foreign countries around the world, while keeping the technology out of the hands of our adversaries'. Beijing condemned the move, accusing the US of 'abusing export controls to suppress and contain China'. 'These actions seriously harm the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises and endanger China's development interests,' the commerce ministry said. It also warned that 'any organisation or individual that enforces or assists in enforcing such measures' could be in violation of Chinese law.

Govt to set up task force to address serious financial irregularities

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will be setting up a special task force to address serious financial irregularities to strengthen the credibility of the country's fiscal management, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a post on his social media account, he said the decision was made during the Special Cabinet Committee on National Governance (JKKTN) meeting he chaired earlier today. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said that the committee had taken a serious view of the audit findings on financial irregularities as they could potentially affect the credibility of the country's fiscal management. 'In line with efforts to strengthen the role of the National Audit Department through amendments to the Audit Act 1957, the JKKTN agreed to establish a special task force to address serious financial irregularities,' he said, adding that this is to ensure more holistic, targeted, and effective response measures in accordance with the principles of accountability, transparency, and integrity.
