Daytona won't host NASCAR's Championship Weekend but what other tracks might?

NBC Sports06-05-2025

Daytona International Speedway will not be among the tracks considered for NASCAR's Championship Weekend, a senior executive said Tuesday.
So, no, the season won't start and end at Daytona for those who suggest it.
But what tracks could be considered for the season finale?
NASCAR announced Tuesday that Homestead-Miami Speedway, a 1.5-mile track, will host the season finale for Cup, Xfinity and the Craftsman Truck Series on Nov. 6-8, 2026. Homestead hosted Championship Weekend from 2002-19.
Phoenix, which has hosted the title races since 2020, will be among the tracks that will rotate to host the season finale.
Ben Kennedy, NASCAR executive vice president, chief venue & racing Innovation officer, said not to expect Daytona International Speedway to be among the tracks in the rotation for the Championship Weekend. He said the focus is on short tracks and intermediate tracks where NASCAR will crown its champions.
'Never say never, but I think we've unanimously agreed that (the title race) needs to look and feel like what we would expect traditional NASCAR racing to look and feel like,' Kennedy said. 'So short tracks, intermediate tracks, mile tracks are all on the board. Superspeedways, I think, we all feel right now we wouldn't consider that as a championship venue, not that Daytona isn't a championship-caliber venue.
'… We want to make sure that when we go to Homestead-Miami or Phoenix or wherever it might be in the future, that there is a lot of strategy and that a lot of our championship drivers are also contending for the victory at the end of that race.'
Kennedy also noted that road courses fall into a similar category as superspeedways in not being a candidate to host a championship event.
That would eliminate the following tracks from consideration: Daytona, Talladega (superspeedway), Atlanta (Superspeedway-style racing), Circuit of the Americas (road course), Sonoma (road course), Watkins Glen (road course), Charlotte Roval (road course) and Mexico City (road course). This is the third and final year of the current contract for the Chicago Street Race and no extension has been announced.
NASCAR will look at other factors in selecting its host for the championship weekend.
'As you think about a championship race, ideally a warm weather kind of climate location,' Kennedy said. 'You can't race everywhere in the world, especially in early November, so there's a handful of venues and properties that we tend to gravitate towards.'
Other tracks likely eliminated because of weather or some other factor would be Michigan, New Hampshire, Pocono, Dover, Indianapolis, Iowa, Richmond and World Wide Technology Raceway near St. Louis.
Darlington likely would not be considered because the Southern 500 is traditionally held on Labor Day weekend. NASCAR knows the wrath of fans with taking that race off that weekend and won't repeat that.
Nashville Superspeedway, a 1.33-mile concrete track, could tap into the city's excitement but the track is about 30 miles from the city and also could use additional facilities.
Martinsville would be intriguing but weather could be an issue and the limited number of suites at the historic track, along with not being in a major city, would be factors.
Bristol has the facility to host a championship race but the weather in early November could be a question.
If the NASCAR season could end in mid-October, then that could give stronger consideration to Bristol — and others. But how to end the season early will be difficult in coming years, especially if the NFL adds an 18th regular-season game and moves the Super Bowl back a week into when the Daytona 500 typically is. That would affect the rest of the series schedule. NASCAR already tried mid-week races and TV viewership was not strong enough to continue that.
Among tracks, along with Phoenix and Homestead, that could be considered to host the season finale would be:
— Las Vegas Motor Speedway, a 1.5-mile track that has hosted a playoff race since 2018 when it started having two Cup dates.
— Texas Motor Speedway, a 1.5-mile track that hosted playoff races from 2005-23.
— Kansas Speedway, a 1.5-mile track that has hosted playoff races since 2004 but weather could keep it from hosting the title race unless the end of the season is moved up.
— Charlotte Motor Speedway, a 1.5-mile track that hosted playoff races on the oval from 2004-17 before the playoff race was moved to the track's Roval. Any finale there would be on the oval.

NASCAR star Alex Bowman suffers frightening crash during Michigan race: 'That hurt a lot'

NASCAR Cup Series star Alex Bowman took a hard hit on Sunday during the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway. The driver of No. 48 was driving behind Cole Custer and Daniel Suarez on Lap 67 when Custer got loose and hit both Suarez and Bowman. Suarez and Custer spun while Chase Briscoe got loose trying to move past the carnage in front of him. Austin Cindric was at the bottom of Custer and appeared to have avoided disaster. Bowman hit the wall head on hard and bounced back down the track. It took a brief moment, but Bowman was able to exit the vehicle under his own power. The red flag was waved and the race was briefly put on hold as emergency crews worked to clean up the wreck and make sure each driver involved got off the track. Bowman talked to Amazon Prime Video after he exited the infield care center. "Yeah, that hurt a lot. Probably top of the board on hits I've taken," he said. "Looks like the 41 got loose, or the 2 got into him or something. At that point, I was just along for the ride, I couldn't do anything. Just, 'Oh s---, this is about to hurt really bad.' "Hate that. Hate that for our team. It's been a really rough two months." The Hendrick Motorsports driver finished 36th last week in Nashville and will finish 36th at Michigan. He's finished outside the top 20 in four of the last five races. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Alex Bowman unhurt after massive hit that red flags Michigan Cup race

In the second stage of the NASCAR Cup race at Michigan, drivers were scrambling on a restart as they battled three and four-wide for position on track. Alex Bowman was deep in the pack, running 29th when his race came to sudden and violent end. Bowman was in the middle of a tense battle with a four-wide situation directly in front of him. Cole Custer got loose and shot up the track, spinning Daniel Suarez. At the same time, he hit Bowman as well. Bowman's No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports shot to the right, slamming the outside wall head-on in an impact that managed to left the rear tires off the ground. Advertisement Bowman was going about 150mph when the car slammed the wall. Pole-sitter Chase Briscoe was also collected, spinning at the exit of Turn 2. "That one was really f****** big," radioed Bowman as he put the window net down and climbed the car. It was a relief to see, as Bowman has been sidelined due to both a back injury and concussion in recent year. "Yeah, that hurt a lot," said Bowman after being released from the infield care center. "That was probably top of the board on hits I've taken and unfortunately, I've taken a lot of hits. I hate that for the #48 team. Obviously, (sponsor) Ally is from here. Looks like the #41 [Custer] got loose or the #2 [Austin Cindric] got into him or something. At that point, just along for the ride. Couldn't really do anything except think about oh shit this is about to hurt really bad. Hate that. Hate that for our team. It's been a rough two months. Advertisement Suarez and Briscoe were able to continue, while both Custer and Bowman fell out of the race. This continues an unfortunate run of races for the No. 48 HMS Chevrolet, finishing 27th or worse in seven of the last nine races. The race was red-flagged on Lap 68 of 200 as Bowman's car came to rest in the middle of the track. The stoppage lasted about 13 minutes. Read Also: Who's next? Hemi power: Ram plans return to NASCAR in 2026 with Truck Series entry. Cup Series could be next

Ram will return to NASCAR next year in the Truck Series, a comeback the Stellantis-owned brand believes is the first step toward launching a stock car program in the top Cup Series. Ram, which left NASCAR after the 2012 season, will race in the third-tier Truck Series alongside rivals Ford, Chevrolet, and Toyota. Ram becomes the first new manufacturer to enter NASCAR at the national level since 2007. Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis made the NASCAR announcement Sunday before the Cup race at Michigan International Speedway. Kuniskis has bold goals and ideas — he's vowed to make 25 product announcements over 18 months — and he said Ram will enter its trucks aggressively with the intention to be disruptive. 'The way we're going to do it is unlike anyone else,' Kuniskis said. 'The reason that we've been out of NASCAR for 12 years is a very tough (return on investment); it is a very tough business decision to make. But when we say we're back, when we say nothing stops Ram, when we bring the Hemi (engine) back, when we bring some of the other stuff that we haven't shown you, it makes perfect sense to be back in the space and back up.' Kuniskis said Ram will tap into NASCAR's estimated fan base of 20 million 'and turn it into 80 or 100 million.' 'We have a plan. We know how we're going to do it. We think we have a path to get to that. We think people are going to like the way we're doing it because it's going to be fun,' he said. 'Not ready to share all the details with you yet, but I told you that the experiential piece was going to be just a little bit of how we're doing it. It's going to get crazier from there.' Ram raced out of the starting gate by using the Cup race at Michigan, which is just 90 minutes away from automotive capital Detroit, to announce its return. Ram staged a demonstration of its truck on the frontstretch before the start of Sunday's race. Kuniskis anticipates having four to six trucks at Daytona for the opener next February. John Probst, NASCAR senior vice president and chief racing development officer, indicated Ram may not be the first announcement of a new manufacturer, with talks continuing with other brands. NASCAR last welcomed a manufacturer into the Truck Series in 2004 with Toyota. 'We're excited that they (Ram) have interest in the Cup Series,' Probst said of Stellantis. 'I don't want to jinx ourselves, but I would say we are very close with one other (manufacturer). Even with that, there's one or two others that we're a little bit earlier in the discussions. 'We all know that a (manufacturer) deciding to come into NASCAR, it's a big commitment for them. It's not something that they take lightly. It requires a lot of research and approval at the highest levels. We're confident right now. We like the position we're in and think that we're a pretty good investment for a (manufacturer).' Stellantis features 14 automotive brands, including Dodge and Chrysler. Dodge raced in NASCAR through the 2012 season and left the same month it celebrated the Cup title with Brad Keselowski and Penske Racing. 'We have cars in our company,' Kuniskis said. ___ AP auto racing:
