Father killed in Laguna Beach crash while teaching his 15-year-old daughter how to drive, police say
He was trying to teach his daughter how to drive on Memorial Day when the lesson turned deadly.
James Politoski, 64, of Laguna Beach was teaching his 15-year-old daughter how to drive Monday around 2:43 p.m. when she drove from the upper parking lot of a Gelson's Market, breached the fence, and continued down an embankment to the Coast Highway near Wesley Drive and Montage Resort Drive, according to the Laguna Beach Police Department.
The teenager was significantly injured and hospitalized at Mission Viejo, according to authorities. Politoski was pronounced dead at the scene.

School nurse helps rescue grandfather who fell during hike at Utah canyon
Ashley Anderson was hiking in with her two kids and her dogs on Memorial Day when she heard yelling. "I look over and I didn't even know what I was looking at at first," she said. "It took me a second to register that it was a body." A 64-year-old grandfather had fallen 20 feet down waterfall in Utah's Adams Canyon. Anderson, a school nurse, sprang into action and used her training to help him. She told NBC affiliate KSL of Salt Lake City that the man had an "obviously broken" leg and that his head was "sliced open and bleeding." When Anderson arrived, she and other hikers who had pitched in to help moved him out of the cold water that was covering him. She then began first aid. She said she told the group she needed something to stop bleeding on the man's head. "This guy rips off his shirt and throws it on me, so we put that on his head, and several of us picked him up and moved him to a dry area over on the rocks," Anderson recalled. Rescue teams responded, using a helicopter to drop rescuers into the canyon before they lifted the man back up to safety. Authorities said that the man was hiking with his children and grandchildren and that he fell after they got separated, KSL reported. Anderson told the station the man's family said he slipped and fell into the canyon. The station reported he shattered his kneecap and broke his femur but is expected to make a full recovery. Man who died after Fort Lauderdale boat explosion operated the vessel, FWC says
A father of four died from his injuries after a boat he was driving exploded off Fort Lauderdale on Memorial Day, the man's loved ones announced in a GoFundMe fundraiser. Joshua Fifi, a 29-year-old who lived Fort Lauderdale, was identified as the man who died after the blast, according to the fundraiser page. The fundraiser, organized by Hannah Galindo, said Fifi's 'sudden passing has left his family, friends, and community in shock and grief.' The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the state police agency investigating the incident, released a statement Monday night saying Fifi was the operator of the 39-foot Sea Ray cabin cruiser. He was driving the vessel north in the Intracoastal Waterway shortly after refueling around 5:45 p.m. when he tried starting the port, or left side, inboard engine and the boat exploded, according to the FWC statement. Fifi was one of the 14 people on board the vessel, which was near the large sandbar by the New River when the flash explosion occurred. Eleven people — including two young children — were hospitalized with injuries. Some were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's burn unit in Miami, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said. 'Our thoughts are with the friends and family of Mr. Fifi during this difficult time,' the FWC said in its statement. That is indeed what one Yankees fan says happened to him at Friday's Dodgers-Yankees game. A photo showed the piece to be roughly the size of a baseball. Aquino said he was in pain but applied an ice pack and soldiered on through the rest of the game, which the Dodgers ultimately won, 8-5, the news outlet reported. A day later, a piece of concrete netting was installed in the area of the ceiling in the Section 10 reserve where the incident was reported, The Times confirmed. "We had professionals and experts at Dodger Stadium this past weekend to examine the facility and ensure its safety," Dodgers spokesperson Ally Salvage told The Times.
