No, the iPhone 17 Air didn't inspire the Galaxy S25 Edge: Samsung clarifies

India Today19-05-2025

Samsung has clarified that the iPhone 17 Air did not inspire the Galaxy S25 Edge. This lays to rest all speculation that the unannounced slim Apple iPhone had anything to do with the making of the 'slimmest Galaxy S ever.' Apparently, the idea of the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge dates back to at least 2023, long before rumours of the iPhone 17 Air started to appear on the internet.advertisementEver since Samsung launched the S25 Edge, the internet has been set ablaze with hot gossip that it was a copy of the iPhone 17 Air, a phone that doesn't even exist today. But what the gossip mongers failed to realise is that things take time, they just don't materialise overnight. That is especially true for a smartphone, even more so for one that is trying to be different.Samsung product specialist Kadesh Beckford told Forbes that he had known about the Edge since the Galaxy Z Flip 5 launch week, which was in August 2023. While not explicitly confirmed, the idea might have come even earlier and eventually, gone through multiple stages of research and development internally. You can say that slim phones are not new, but putting flagship specs and features on them is not very common, something that Beckford also highlighted.advertisement'To make this phone, we had to redesign every component [to fit into a slimmer chassis], which isn't an easy feat,' Beckford was quoted as saying, like, say, for instance, the 200-megapixel primary camera sensor (and lens) had to be redesigned, to fit into a much smaller space than say the Galaxy S25 Ultra which uses the same spec. The Samsung executive also explained that a phone like the Galaxy S25 Edge exists because people have been asking for Galaxy S25 Ultra-like features in a relatively leaner package. This seems logical. The Edge does have a lot in common with the Ultra – it has the same Titanium alloy frame, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, the full suite of Galaxy AI conveniences, and obviously, that 200-megapixel camera. It, too, is guaranteed to get seven generations of software updates. The Galaxy S25 Edge does all this and still comes in at 5.8mm and 163 grams. (You can read our full first impressions of the phone here.) The Galaxy S25 Ultra, on the other hand, is a gargantuan 8.2mm and 218 grams. At the time of writing, the Galaxy S25 Edge is a reality while the iPhone 17 Air is just vapourware. While it would be nice if Apple had a phone like that in the works and is gearing to launch it soon, credit where credit is due, Samsung has got its first dibs at the consumer who has been wanting it. And nobody can take that away from it.

As we wait to get a glimpse at the new iPhones, rumours surrounding the smartphone have started to circulate rapidly, showcasing the design, feature upgrades, camera, and other crucial features. In a new leak, the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air are tipped to offer higher refresh rates. However, there is a catch. Well, reportedly, the standard iPhone 17 models may not feature the ProMotion technology as earlier expected. Additionally, the leak also gave us a glimpse of a performance upgrade by revealing the chipset. Therefore, if you have been planning to buy the iPhone 17 series, here's everything you need to know about what's coming. This upgrade was previously speculated due to the inclusion of ProMotion technology, but this may not be the case. While the base models are slated to get an upgraded display refresh rate, they may not support ProMotion displays. This display technology offers iPhone Pro models with an LTPO screen, offering a refresh rate of 120Hz to 1Hz. While standard iPhone 17 models may not come with ProMotion display, but they are slated to come with a 90Hz display. This will eventually make the smartphones run faster in comparison to standard iPhone 16 models. Therefore, we can speculate that the ProMotion display is still reserved for the iPhone 17 Pro models. Also read: iPhone 17 Air likely to come with optional accessories for lasting battery life- Details Alongside the display, the iPhone 17 series is also slated for a major performance upgrade. In a new leak, the Geekbench 6 performance scores of the A19 Pro chip were tipped. The scores showcased a better performance than the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra with the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor. Reportedly, the A19 Pro achieved more than 4000 points in Single core and more than 10000 points in Multicore, which is quite impressive. Furthermore, the smartphones are also expected to get 12 GB of RAM, a desired upgrade from 8GB of RAM, even for the Pro models. Therefore, this year's iPhone model could really come with worthy upgrades that may sway buyers to upgrade.

iOS 26 Brings Exclusive AI-Powered Features to iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Series

Apple's iOS 26 is finally here, bringing a sleek new design and several powerful features. But not all users will get to enjoy the full experience. While every supported iPhone benefits from the new Liquid Glass interface, the most advanced tools are limited to Apple's newer devices—specifically the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 lineup, and the upcoming iPhone 17 series. These premium features rely on Apple Intelligence, the tech giant's AI platform that demands advanced processing capabilities found only in the latest hardware. Here are eight standout iOS 26 features that are exclusive to these models: 1. AI-Powered Order Tracking in Wallet The Wallet app now intelligently pulls order information from your emails—even if the merchant doesn't support tracking. Apple Intelligence automatically scans your messages, updating your Wallet with order details for a smoother, smarter experience. 2. Smarter Reminders with AI Suggestions The Reminders app has evolved. It can now suggest tasks by reading through your messages and emails, and even auto-organize lists into sections without needing user input. These time-saving features are exclusive to devices that support Apple Intelligence. 3. Enhanced Genmoji and Creative Image Playground Customization gets a major boost. You can blend two emojis or create detailed Genmoji based on descriptions—including outfits, hairstyles, and moods. The Image Playground also introduces new styles like anime, oil painting, and vector art, all powered by on-device AI. 4. Advanced Messaging Tools with AI Support iOS 26 introduces new Polls and Backgrounds in Messages. While polls are universal, only newer iPhones offer AI-generated poll suggestions. Similarly, custom AI-generated backgrounds are exclusive to supported models. 5. Visual Intelligence Beyond the Camera Previously introduced on the iPhone 16, Visual Intelligence now extends its capabilities to your screenshots. Whether it's a product image or event detail, your device can offer suggestions like shopping links or calendar reminders—another perk limited to Apple's newest iPhones. 6. AI Shortcuts for Faster Actions The Shortcuts app in iOS 26 now integrates AI to generate images, summarize content, and offer intelligent responses. However, these actions require Apple Intelligence, available only on iPhone 15 Pro and newer devices. 7. Live Translation Across Calls and Chats Breaking language barriers in real time, Live Translation now works during calls, video chats, and text conversations. Whether via captions or spoken translations, this feature ensures seamless global communication—but only for the latest iPhones. "In Messages, Live Translation can automatically translate messages. If a user is making plans with new friends while traveling abroad, their message can be translated as they type, delivered in the recipient's preferred language, and when they get a response, each message can be instantly translated. On FaceTime calls, a user can follow along with translated live captions while still hearing the speaker's voice. And when on a phone call, the translation is spoken aloud throughout the conversation," Apple said. These features reflect Apple's clear shift toward a smarter, AI-driven mobile experience—one that's increasingly dependent on cutting-edge hardware. For users of older iPhones, it might be time to consider an upgrade to take full advantage of what iOS 26 has to offer.

Return the phones!: Apple sends warning to thieves who looted iPhones during Los Angeles riots

Looters who stole iPhones during riots in Los Angeles got an unexpected message from Apple: 'Please return to Apple Tower Theatre . This device has been disabled and is being tracked. Local authorities will be alerted.' Several display phones, stolen from the Apple Tower Theatre store in downtown LA amid anti-ICE protests, were remotely locked and triggered alarms, effectively turning the devices into high-tech bait. Videos circulating online show the phones flashing the message while blaring loudly, making them impossible to ignore. The video, of BG on the Scene, was shared by startup founder Mario Nawfal who wrote on X, "Looters ransacked the Apple Store at Tower Theatre during downtown LA protests. They smashed glass, grabbed phones, laptops, and whatever else wasn't nailed down. But Apple doesn't play. The stolen iPhones were display models. When stolen, they locked up, blared alarms, and flashed this message: 'Please return to Apple Tower Theatre. This device has been disabled and is being tracked. Local authorities will be alerted.' Translation: Congratulations, you've stolen a brick that tattles." Demonstrators had taken to the streets starting June 9 to oppose Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in the city. However, tensions escalated into riots, with vandals targeting multiple storefronts, including a Jordan Flagship store and the Apple Store. — MarioNawfal (@MarioNawfal) Live Events Footage and photos from the scene showed shattered glass, looted merchandise, and graffiti scrawled across the Apple Store's windows. A nearby jewelry store was also ransacked. According to LAPD Officer Chris Miller, at least three suspects were apprehended in connection to the Apple Store burglary. One woman was arrested on the spot, while two others were detained for looting. Authorities say the unrest was largely concentrated within a five-block radius downtown. By Tuesday, nearly 200 people had been detained, and at least seven officers injured in the chaos. Since the protests began on Saturday, LAPD has made nearly 400 arrests. Most were for failure to disperse, though a few involved more serious charges—including assaulting police officers and possession of dangerous weapons like Molotov cocktails and firearms. Meanwhile, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and leaders of more than 30 smaller cities in California called for an end to the federal immigration sweeps that have disrupted many regions in the state. At a news conference, Bass suggested that the raids were done simply to "cause fear and panic." Her comments came just hours after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told a Senate hearing that troops could be sent to other cities if law enforcement officers were threatened there. At the White House, Karoline Leavitt, the press secretary, also insisted that the "left wing riots" would not halt the ICE raids.
