Ukrainian and US officials hold 'productive' ceasefire talks in Riyadh
RIYADH — Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov announced on Sunday that talks between US and Ukrainian delegations in Saudi Arabia were "productive and focused" and with "key points including energy" addressed.
The US negotiators are holding talks in Riyadh with their Ukrainian counterparts and separately with the Russians on Monday.
Washington's aim is to bring about an immediate partial ceasefire to the war in Ukraine, followed by a comprehensive peace deal.
"I feel that he (Putin) wants peace," said President Trump's personal envoy Steve Witkoff, adding: "I think that you're going to see in Saudi Arabia on Monday some real progress."
In a post on social media platform X, Umerov, who is leading the Ukrainian delegation, emphasized that President Volodymyr Zelensky's goal is to 'secure a just and lasting peace" for Ukraine and Europe at large, claiming, "We are working to make that goal a reality."
The Ukrainian delegation also included State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oleksandr Karasevych, deputy heads of the President's Office – Pavlo Palisa and Ihor Zhovkva – as well as Deputy Energy Minister Mykola Kolisnyk, according to the Ukrinform news agency.
Palisa confirmed on the same day that they would not be meeting with the Russian delegation in Riyadh.
In a video address on Sunday evening, Zelensky said that the talks held that day between the US and Ukrainian officials were "very productive". He also called on all parties to continue to exert pressure on Russia to compel it to achieve a "genuine" ceasefire.
The talks came almost two weeks after a previous meeting between the two sides in the Saudi port city of Jeddah, which saw Kyiv agree to a Washington proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, in exchange for the US lifting its pause on military aid to and intelligence sharing with Ukraine.
Notably, the meeting precedes the talks between US and Russian delegations, which are scheduled to take place on Monday.
The Kremlin's delegation includes the chairman of the committee on international affairs in Russia's upper house, Grigory Karasin, and adviser to the head of Russia's Federal Security Service, Sergey Beseda, according to a Russian presidential aide.
US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that efforts to stop further escalation between Russia and Ukraine were 'somewhat under control'. He's also stated that he hopes the Riyadh talks offer a breakthrough to finally bring the more than three-year war to a close.
Yet Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman has dampened expectations. "We are only at the beginning of this path," he told Russian state TV.
The US-Ukraine talks began soon after nightfall on Sunday, behind closed doors.
Black Sea shipping lanes are also under discussion, with Russia reportedly keen to revive a deal that allowed Ukraine to export grain from its ports without being attacked, in exchange for relief on sanctions.
Both sides, Russia and Ukraine, have carried out hugely destructive attacks on each other's infrastructure. — Agencies

Russian strike kills 5 in Ukraine, including a 1-year-old, hours after Trump-Putin call
PRYLUKY, Ukraine: At least five people, including a 1-year-old child, his mother and grandmother, were killed Thursday in a nighttime Russian drone attack on the northern Ukrainian city of Pryluky, officials said. Six drones hit a residential area in the city shortly before dawn, injuring nine others, according to authorities. The child killed was the grandson of the local fire chief, Ukraine's Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said. The fire chief, identified by local officials as 50-year-old Oleksandr Lebid, 'arrived to respond to the aftermath right at his own home,' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a post on Telegram. 'It turned out that a Shahed drone hit his house.' The attack came just hours after US President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to Trump, Putin said 'very strongly' that Russia will retaliate for Ukraine's stunning drone attacks on Russian military airfields on Sunday. US-led diplomatic efforts to stop the more than 3-year-long war have delivered no significant progress, and the grinding war of attrition has continued unabated. Child's mother feared drone attacks The mother of the 1-year-old killed in Pryluky was a police officer called Daryna Shyhyda, Ukraine's National Police said. 'Today our hearts are scorched by pain,' the police force wrote on Telegram. 'This is not just a loss — it is three generations of life uprooted.' Liudmyla Horbunova, 55, who lives across the street from where the Shahed drone hit, said Shyhyda had moved with her son last weekend to her parents' house from her home in Kyiv because she was scared of potential Russian attacks on the capital. 'She ran away from Shaheds in Kyiv, but they found her here, in Pryluky,' Horbunova told The Associated Press. The city is far from the front line and does not contain any known military assets. The last time Pryluky was struck was in November last year, when a Russian missile hit an administrative building and injured one person. Zelensky said a total of 103 drones and one ballistic missile targeted multiple Ukrainian regions overnight, including Donetsk, Kharkiv, Odesa, Sumy, Chernihiv, Dnipro and Kherson. 'This is another massive strike,' Zelensky said. 'It is yet another reason to impose the strongest possible sanctions and apply pressure collectively.' Saudi Arabia and Syria explore investment cooperation in bid to boost economic integration
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia and Syria are set to advance economic cooperation following a virtual meeting between the Kingdom's Minister of Investment Khalid Al-Falih and the Middle Eastern country's Minister of Economy and Industry Mohammad Al-Shaar. The two sides reviewed prospects for investment partnerships and discussed opportunities to expand collaboration in both public and private sectors, according to a report by the Saudi Press Agency. The discussions focused on promoting high-quality investments across productive and service industries, with the goal of supporting Syria's economic development and enhancing regional financial integration. The meeting also examined ways to build a favorable environment for cross-border investments that can contribute to long-term stability. Syria is undertaking significant efforts to revive its economy following years of conflict. The transitional government, led by President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, has initiated reforms, including the privatization of state enterprises, the lifting of import restrictions, and the encouragement of foreign investment. Notable developments encompass a $7 billion energy infrastructure agreement with a Qatari-led consortium, the reopening of the Damascus Securities Exchange, and a $300 million fiber-optic project involving Gulf telecom firms.
