Shock update after Aussie doused with petrol

Don't miss out on the headlines from National. Followed categories will be added to My News. The man who brutally bashed 18-year-old Sydney woman Lauren Huxley about the head with fibro cutters, doused her in petrol and left her for dead could soon be out on day release. Lauren's family were notified of the frightening reality this week and are 'absolutely gutted'. Her sister Simone told Robert Black Farmer had dealt her family a life sentence but now he could be getting a chance at a new life. 'He stole beauty from her world. She has had countless operations to put her face back together, 12 hour operation after 12 hour operation. She had a five per cent chance of survival, they didn't even know how she lived, let alone learn to walk and talk and eat again,' Simone said of her little sister who is now 38. Picture: Supplied Simone says her sister Laufren Huxley never complains, never says 'why me?'. Picture: Supplied 'She spent seven months in hospital. She was 18 years old, she had a future to look forward to and he stole it. He got a minimum term of 20 years for that, a maximum of 24. We have got a life sentence.' In June 2008, Farmer — who has never admitted to his crime — was sentenced to a non-parole period of 20 years with a maximum of 24 years for the unprovoked attack on Lauren, a stranger, after a jury found him guilty. In handing the sentence down, Justice Peter Hall referred to the 39-year-old's lack of remorse and said there was no doubt he tried to kill Ms Huxley. Farmer had a long criminal history, including stealing thousands of litres of petrol just one month before the attack and had also been convicted of armed robbery with wounding. This week the Huxley family received word from the parole authority that Farmer, who is now a minimum security inmate, may soon qualify for day release even though he still has four and a half years of his minimum sentence to serve. Christine, Pat and Simone relieved after a judge locked him Lauren's attacker for at least 20 years. Lauren Huxley spent seven months in hospital and underwent numerous surgeries. She defied the odds. Police image of Robert Black Farmer who has never admitted to the brutal attack on Lauren Huxley that left her with brain damage and other life-long injuries. For Simone and her parents Christine and Pat, who try to shield Lauren from reliving the nightmare, the news was gut wrenching. 'I have been feeling sick since the phone call, there've been a lot of tears, and now we are angry,' Simone said. 'This person was on bail and parole when he committed one of the most horrendous crimes our country has seen. 'He has never shown any remorse for what he did to an innocent 18 year old whom he had never laid eyes on before that dreadful day. She had her whole life ahead of her and he stole it; the emotional, psychological and physical toll of his actions is something we continue to live with everyday. Lauren Huxley, sister Simone and mum Christine . Picture: Supplied It's been a long road to revovery but Lauren Huxley has always remained positive and grateful she is still alive. 'That pain does not lessen with time, and is compounded by the knowledge that he may soon walk freely among us, even if only for part of the day. 'We strongly believe the safety, healing and dignity of victims and their families need to be prioritised, especially when the perpetrator has shown no signs of accountability for their actions. This career criminal has repeatedly been freed to commit more crimes and devastate lives. He doesn't deserve it. 'Changes need to be mde to the laws. People on bail and parole when they attack innocent people like Lauren don't deserve leniency or the lesser end of their sentece. They should serve their full term.' Simone says she believes other Australians 'who saw what happened to Lauren when the case was so highly publicised' would feel the same. Lauren, who can now drive a car, has a job and is a 'doting aunty' is 'so positive and so grateful to be alive' despite the challenges she faces every day. 'She never once has said 'why me?' and we are completely grateful to have her here with us,' Simone said. 'She is a miracle in every sense of the world. She just deserves some peace now.' NRL 2025: Pitch invader grabs Daly Cherry-Evans, comes off second best

Don't miss out on the headlines from NRL. Followed categories will be added to My News. It was an eventful evening for Daly Cherry-Evans on Friday night, with the Manly captain grabbed by a rogue pitch invader after Manly's loss to the Gold Coast Titans. The Titans thumped the Sea Eagles 28-8 in a surprise result that leaves Manly's finals hopes hanging in the balance. Cherry-Evans had a poor performance with Manly looking rudderless in attack, and his evening took a turn when he was momentarily grabbed by a pitch invader after the game. As Manly and Titans players shared pleasantries on the field post-game, a fan dressed in Manly gear ran onto CBUS Super Stadium and grabbed Cherry-Evans as the halfback was talking to a Manly staff member. Cherry-Evans looked around, startled by the embrace that came out of nowhere, before a swarm of security guards in hi-vis grabbed the intruder and tackled him to the ground. Cherry-Evans didn't look too phased by the incident, which was captured on Fox League's cameras. Kevin Walters said: 'Hang on, there's a bit going on in the background' Yvonne Sampson added: 'There's an over zealous Sea Eagles fan who's ran onto the pitch and looks like he was quickly dealt with by security.' (Photo by) The post-game incident came after a horror performance from Manly and a poor game by Cherry-Evans, disappointing week for the Sea Eagles skipper after being axed by Billy Slater. 'The start of the week was tough, Sunday got the news, Monday had to go to training and face the boys,' Cherry-Evans said. 'After that it honestly started to feel normal. This is not the first time that I've been dropped from the Queensland side. 'So I guess I've had experience to take it on board and like I said pre-game, you can't just worry about the things you can't control, and the initial news was tough but yeah I moved on and thought we were going to come here tonight and play some really good footy. 'Based on our preparation, it looked like all the signs were there and unfortunately the most important part of the week is showing up on game day and we didn't do that.' Cherry-Evans was pressed on whether he saw his Origin axing coming but dodged the question. 'No, I just got the call on Sunday and then just, yeah, moved on from there,' Cherry-Evans said. Daly Cherry-Evans and Anthony Seibold after the loss to the Titans. 'I think I got the call on Sunday which was tough and processed it pretty quickly during the week and moved on, and yeah as I said the focus has been on Manly all this week so it's again disappointing to lose back-to-back games.' Cherry-Evans was then pressed on reports from Sam Walker's manager the Roosters have gone cold on signing him after his form slump. 'No, I'm not, I don't sort of understand that stuff,' Cherry-Evans said. 'Sort of stay out of it. All I can do is control my footy at Manly and speculation will be speculation but yeah, no, just obviously we've just lost a couple in the row so it'd be silly for me to be worrying about stuff like that.' Manly enforced injured in big blow In a big blow for Manly, Haumole Olakau'atu suffered a dislocated shoulder and is facing a lengthy stint on the sidelines. 'He dislocated his shoulder there so he'll get scans over the weekend and if there's bone damage then potentially you have to do reconstruction,' Seibold said. 'If it's muscle only or the ligaments only then potentially you can rehab it over six weeks but he's going to be gone for a while. 'But just summed up the night you know he's going for a try and dislocates his shoulder, so we will miss him of course. He is a quality player.' Seibold admitted his side were outplayed by the last placed Titans. 'We were outplayed, defensively we missed far too many tackles, which is an attitude thing,' Seibold said. Haumole Olakau'atu of the Sea Eagles looks on after getting injured in the loss. (Photo by) 'We actually started really well the first 10 minutes, but after that we were well outplayed so we couldn't get ourselves back in the contest.' Seibold was pressed on why his team has been so inconsistent this season. 'I think mate, it comes back to attitude, being consistent individually, collectively, that's not just the players, that's the staff who've got to come up with some answers because we're a really good footy team, right?' Seibold said. 'Like in our first month of footy, outstanding this year, even like two weeks ago, well three weeks ago, very good against the Broncos and a couple weeks earlier they were really good against the Cowboys, but it's the story of our season. I think we missed the jump there, Titans made us pay.' Seibold took ownership of the side's preparation as they currently sit outside the top eight. 'We've done it every away trip this year, we did it up in Townsville, played really well up there,' Seibold said. Cherry-Evans saved some praise for former teammate Kieran Foran, who was brilliant against his old side. 'He's a good friend and one of the great competitors of our game,' Cherry-Evans said. 'So there was absolutely no doubt he was coming out here tonight to put it over his old side and he did exactly that tonight, he was really good wasn't he?' The result leaves Manly 10th on the ladder heading into a bye, before games against the Wests Tigers and Rabbitohs before another bye. - With Originally published as Pitch invader grabs Daly Cherry-Evans, comes off second best in post-game incident

WA announces investigation into electric bikes and scooters

The WA government will launch a statewide investigation into the safety of electric bikes and scooters in response to growing community concern. The government will set up a bipartisan Parliamentary Committee to find ways to strengthen the safety and regulation of the 'e-rideables'. The state has had four fatalities involving e-rideables since the start of the year, including that of Perth dad Thahn Phan, who was allegedly hit by a British tourist last week on a rented e-scooter. Following that incident the state government said that it needed to do more. 'We have very strict regulations about the speed of e-scooters,' said Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti. 'But it's obvious we need to do more on compliance.' she said. The committee is set to investigate the expansion of penalties, how the vehicles are rented, how they are used in congested areas and how technology like speed limiting can be used to make them safer. Announcing the new committee, Police and Road Safety Minister Reece Whitby said the government wanted to do 'as much as possible' to keep everyone safe from e-rideables. 'I've become increasingly concerned about safety issues around e-rideables and e-scooters and I'm particularly concerned about the safety and the vulnerability of pedestrians as well as those people who ride these devices,' Mr Whitby said. 'And I think there's a growing community concern also.' Other measures to be considered by the committee are night-time curfews and the use of e-bikes and e-scooters in entertainment districts. Asked by reporters on Saturday morning, Mr Whitby said a ban of the vehicles on footpaths would 'absolutely' be considered. Mr Whitby said it was important that the state had a bipartisan approach to the reforms, acknowledging that he wanted the community to work together. The committee will deliver its report in September and Mr Whitby said in the meantime the police would need to maintain 'vigilance' in their enforcement. E-bikes have come under fire nationally in recent months as fatalities continue to mount.
