And now Nottingham Forest are preparing to make their latest improvements to the historic stadium.
The City Ground was updated in 1957, 1965, 1980, 1993 and 1996.
But no major work has been done on the venue for almost 30 years.
Now, though, Forest have taken a big step closer to moderning and expanding their home.

Plans to bulldoze and rebuild the Peter Taylor stand will be put forward to the Rushcliffe Borough Council on June 26.
And the planning committee will consider the application after the council planning department "recommended that planning permission be granted subject to a series of planning conditions".
Should it get through as expected, Forest can start making progress with the update.
The plans will see a new 10,000-seater stand built.

It would also be the tallest of the stands at the stadium at 38m tall.
The new main stand's opening should take the City Ground capacity from 30,404 to an initial 35,000.

When first proposed in 2019, the estimated cost was £94m.
However, that has now risen to £130m.
The longer-term plan is then to develop the Bridgford end and increase the number of seats to 40,000 while a 169-apartment block of flats is also in the works.
A Forest and council joint statement said: 'Nottingham Forest has been in regular dialogue with Rushcliffe Borough Council, Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council regarding the redevelopment of the City Ground.
'The parties can confirm they are working towards the Rushcliffe Borough Council Planning Committee date of Thursday, 26 June to consider the application.
"There will be no further comment other than as required by the relevant legal process.'
It is thought the final administration will be through in 2026, with Forest set to start construction work as soon as possible after that.

Marc Guehi makes transfer decision after Arsenal and Liverpool interest

Marc Guehi is prepared to see out his contract at Crystal Palace if Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle United are unable to provide him with a suitable offer this summer. The former Chelsea youngster has entered the final 12 months of his deal at Selhurst Park and has no plans to extend his stay in south east London. Arsenal are interested in signing the England international this summer as they weigh up a move for another centre-half. But Liverpool appear to have moved ahead of the Gunners in the race to sign Guehi with reports this week claiming they are in 'the best position' to sign him after agreeing a deal to sell Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen. Newcastle meanwhile made four bids for the FA Cup winner last summer, the last of which worth up to £65m. Palace also rejected a stunning £70m offer from Tottenham for their defender during the January transfer window. While there is interest across the Premier League in his services, Guehi is in no rush to decide his next move. This summer represents Palace's last chance to cash in on one if their prized assets but the Guardian report the player is prepared to remain at the club until the end of his contract. Regular first-team football is a priority for Guehi, who has established himself as a regular in the England side. Keeping his place ahead of next summer's World Cup is his target, wary of joining a club where that won't be a guarantee. More Trending While Quansah is poised to leave Liverpool, the partnership of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate will surely remain in place after their role in the club's Premier League title triumph. Likewise at Arsenal, Guehi would have to break up the formidable partnership of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes. While Palace will face the risk of losing Guehi on a free transfer next summer, the club have already identified a replacement. The Eagles are currently in talks with Sporting Lisbon to sign Ousmane Diomande, who is valued at £40m by the Portuguese champions.
