Russia detains French man who entered country on a paddle board
A French citizen who illegally crossed the Russian border on a paddle board from Estonia has been placed in detention for two months, a court in Russia's northern Leningrad region said.
The man, who paddled from Estonia, was detained on the shore of the Narva reservoir - through which the Russian-Estonian border runs - by Federal Security Service (FSB) border guards.

LONDON: Israel's actions in Gaza are 'appalling and intolerable' the UK Prime Minister Keir Starter said on Wednesday amid growing international pressure to stop the slaughter of Palestinians. Aid agencies and governments around the world have all condemned the killing of dozens of Palestinians this week as they tried to access food distribution sites in the decimated territory. It follows growing opposition in Europe to Israel's military campaign, with the UK, France, Germany and Italy becoming increasingly critical of Benjamin Netanyahu's government. 'Israel's recent action is appalling, and in my view counterproductive and intolerable, and we have strongly opposed the expansion of military operations and settler violence and the blocking of humanitarian aid,' Starmer told MPs. He said the UK and its allies were considering sanctions against Israel and that his government had already suspended talks on a free trade agreement. That step was announced after the UK, France, and Canada issued a joint statement last month threatening "concrete actions' against Israel if it did not halt its military operation in Gaza and allow humanitarian aid into the territory. France and Saudi Arabia are organizing a UN conference this month about a two-state solution for Palestine and Israel. France has already said it is considering recognizing the Palestinian state during the conference. Starmer did not answer whether the UK would follow suit and recognize a Palestinian when asked in parliament Wednesday. However, Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer told MPs that the government was reconsidering its position on Palestinian statehood, The Guardian reported. Falconer said he was "appalled" by the killings of Palestinians this week as they gathered to approach a new aid distribution hub. "We call for an immediate and independent investigation into these events for the perpetrators to be held to account,' he said. Dozens of MPs from both the main political parties have signed letters in recent months calling for Palestine to be recognized. Starmer is facing fierce criticism from within his own Labour Party to take a tougher line on Israel. Labour MP Paula Barker said history "will not be kind" to his government unless action is taken. 'What more evidence do we need to call this exactly what it is? A deliberate policy of annexation and genocide," she said.

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he discussed the recent drone attacks by Ukraine on Russia and developments concerning Iran in a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During the conversation, Putin told Trump that Russia will have to respond to the Ukrainian drone attacks, the US president said. "It was a good conversation, but not a conversation that will lead to immediate Peace," he said in a Truth Social Post. Putin ‘strongly' vowed to respond to Ukraine's drone attack on Russian bombers: Trump
US President Donald Trump said he spoke to Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin Wednesday about Ukraine and Iran, warning that the Kremlin leader had 'very strongly' pledged to respond to Kyiv's stunning drone attack on Russian bombers. Trump said that there was no 'immediate peace' on the horizon in Ukraine – which Russia invaded in 2022 – following what he described as a one hour and 15 minute call with the Russian president. On Iran, Trump said that Putin had offered to 'participate' in talks on Tehran's nuclear program, as Trump accused the Islamic Republic of 'slowwalking' its response to Washington's offer of a deal. The call came three days after Ukraine conducted a massive, daring drone attack against Russian military airbases, saying it had destroyed several Russian nuclear-capable bombers worth billions of dollars. Trump said that he and Putin had 'discussed the attack on Russia's docked airplanes, by Ukraine and also various other attacks that have been taking place by both sides.' 'It was a good conversation, but not a conversation that will lead to immediate Peace. President Putin did say, and very strongly, that he will have to respond to the recent attack on the airfields,' Trump said in his post. Trump did not say whether he had warned Putin off any such retaliation against Ukraine, which Washington has supported to the tune of billions of dollars in its fight against Russia. 'Definitive answer' The Republican has repeatedly alarmed Kyiv and Western allies by appearing to side with Putin over the war, and had a blazing Oval Office row with visiting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. But Trump has also showed growing frustration with Putin as Russia has so far derailed the US president's efforts to honor a campaign pledge to end the war within 24 hours – even if he never explained how this could be achieved. The call between Trump and Putin did however show that Washington and Moscow may be eying cooperation on another key global issue – Iran. Trump said he believed they were both 'in agreement' that Iran could not have a nuclear weapon, and that time was running out for Tehran to respond to US offers of a deal. 'President Putin suggested that he will participate in the discussions with Iran and that he could, perhaps, be helpful in getting this brought to a rapid conclusion,' Trump said. The US president added: 'It is my opinion that Iran has been slowwalking their decision on this very important matter, and we will need a definitive answer in a very short period of time!' Putin told his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian that Moscow was ready to help advance talks on a nuclear deal, the Kremlin said on Tuesday. But Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said earlier Wednesday that Washington's proposal was against Tehran's national interest, amid sharp differences over whether Tehran can continue to enrich uranium.
