'Jagmeet Singh is target of hate because...': Shocking report reveals steep rise in South Asian hate in Canada

Time of India4 hours ago

Jagmeet Singh has been the target of online hatred toward South Asians which sees a rising trend in Canada, report revealed.
Between March 1 and April 20, just before the election in Canada, there were more than 2,300 social media posts on X from Canadian accounts targeting South Asians, and the easy target was former NDP leader
Jagmeet Singh
.
A report titled 'The Rise of Anti-South Asian hate in Canada', conducted by UK-based Institute for Strategic Dialog, revealed the trend of a steep rise in hate toward South Asians in Canada, Toronto Star reported.
The report said Canada is being used as an example of what happened when immigration policies led to an "invasion" of South Asian migrants.
The report noted that while the study was on social media hatred, the trend is not limited to the online world.
"Between 2019 and 2023, police-reported hate crimes against South Asians in Canada increased by more than 200 per cent, according to Statistics Canada," the report said.
Analyst at ISD Steven Rai told the Toronto Star that these stereotypes are being promoted by domestic extremists and then getting picked up by people all around the world. Rai said Jagmeet Singh is a target of hate not only because he's a brown man who wears a turban, but also because he's articulate, well-dressed and has reached the upper echelons of Canadian society.

'If you're a white supremacist and you're seeing someone like Jagmeet Singh flourish and gain prominence in Canadian politics and in society … a person like that is really seen as a profound threat,' Rai said.
Jagmeet Singh stepped down as the party chief after he lost his seat in British Columbia in the election. He lost his sear in the House of Commons that he held since 2019. Singh entered politics in 2011 after being elected to the Ontario provincial parliament. In 2017, he became the leader of his party, the first person of color to head a federal party in Canada.

Justice Sayeed: Dedicated police team needed to tackle drug menace effectively

1 2 3 4 Nagpur: Justice MA Sayeed, former member of the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission, has urged the creation of separate police teams for protocol duties and crime investigation to improve the efficiency of anti-narcotics operations. Addressing the city police's Anti-Drug Day programme under Operation Thunder, Justice Sayeed said that the present structure overstretches the force, hampering focused investigation. "The Malimath Commission has already suggested this segregation. The city commissioner must formally move the home ministry," he said. Justice Sayeed stressed the importance of creating dedicated investigation units trained specifically for narcotics-related offences under the NDPS Act. "You need a strong, informed team to tackle the drug menace effectively. This is not just about arrests, it's about long-term disruption of the supply chain," he said. Highlighting the crucial role of NGOs, legal services authorities, and schools in sensitizing both youth and families, he said, "We always speak of rights, but the conversation must start with ethics, duties and discipline. If we want to create good citizens, we must guide the youth before they stray," he said, recalling how during his stint in Nagpur in 2001, he once saw school students casually smoking at a pan shop. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Invisible Patch Is Helping Women Regain Confidence LeanPatch Learn More Undo He chose to confront and counsel them. Praising the police force, Sayeed said that it is easy to label police as corrupt, but he has seen first-hand the kind of hard work Maharashtra police puts in. "Public, police, and judiciary must work together, not in isolation. Mutual respect and trust are essential," Former Nagpur commissioner of police (CP) and retired DGP Bhushan Kumar Upadhyay backed Operation Thunder's approach, calling it a "corrective shift" in drug law enforcement. "The real problem lies with the peddlers, not the users. Drug addicts are victims, they need help. The ones filling their pockets by ruining lives are the ones who should be behind bars," he said. Upadhyay, who served in Nagpur for over a decade, stressed the need for consistency in such operations. "Peddler networks regenerate if not continuously crushed. Long-term intelligence, regular enforcement and coordination with agencies are key." CP Ravinder Singal briefed the audience on the impact of Operation Thunder. Over 1,000 suspects have been apprehended, and the SIMBA app has been central in tracking offender data. "From tip-offs to late-night raids, we've covered every angle. One mother told us how her teenage son got hooked to drugs and slowly slipped into burglary. The downward spiral begins silently — early awareness is our best weapon," he said. Inspector general Dilip Bhujbal emphasised multi-agency collaboration and noted the operation's reach across educational and public zones. MLA Ashish Deshmukh too praised the initiative and recalled past de-addiction efforts in Khaparkheda that revealed how drug dependency often fuels petty crimes. Acting vice-chancellor of the Nagpur University, Madhavi Khode-Chaware, was also present at the occasion.

Azam's family concerned over his health; brings him mangoes

Lucknow: Jailed former cabinet minister and senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan 's family has expressed concern over his deteriorating health and demanded better medical care. Khan is currently lodged in Sitapur district jail and was visited by his wife Tanzeen Fatima, son Adeeb Azam, and SP leader Shavez Khan on Thursday. The meeting, held after prior online registration, lasted for about 1 hour and 42 minutes. After stepping out of the jail, former MP Tanzeen Fatima appeared visibly emotional. When asked if the SP was supporting Khan, she said: "I no longer have faith in anyone. Only Allah can help now. His health is deteriorating; he has become very weak." During the visit, Tanzeen brought along 10 kg of Azam's favourite Dussehri mangoes and essential medicines. She also inquired about her husband's medical condition with jail authorities. Azam's elder son, Abdullah Azam, visited him earlier on Saturday, bringing 5 kg of Dussehri mangoes, medicines and food items. He expressed concern over his father's worsening health and said he needs better medical care. "He is not well. He's aging and suffering from multiple ailments. Azam Khan, now around 76, has been in Sitapur jail since Oct 2023, after being convicted in a fake birth certificate case along with his wife and son Abdullah. The MP-MLA court in Rampur sentenced all three to 7 years in jail on Oct 18, 2023. Due to security concerns, Azam was transferred to Sitapur Jail on Oct 26, 2023. While the High Court later stayed Azam's sentence, his wife and son did not receive similar relief. Tanzeen Fatima and Abdullah, however, are currently out on bail. However, Azam could not come out of jail as he is facing over 89 criminal cases, most of which were filed between 2017 and 2019.

EC officials review electoral roll plan

1 2 Patna: A nine-member team from the Election Commission of India (ECI), led by senior deputy election commissioner Maneesh Garg, on Thursday held a detailed meeting with Bihar chief electoral officer, Vinod Singh Gunjiyal, and other senior officials in Patna to review preparations for the special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections. Addressing the meeting, Garg stressed the need for a special intensive revision in Bihar, given that assembly elections are scheduled to take place later this year. Deputy election commissioner Sanjay Kumar briefed officials on key guidelines through a presentation and discussions focused on the effective and timely implementation of the revision process. The ECI team included deputy election commissioners Bhanu Prakash Yeturu and Sanjay Kumar, advisor N N Butolia, principal Secretary Arvind Anand, Directors Bidyarani Konthoujam and Manoj C, deputy secretary Abhinav Agrawal and secretary Pawan Diwan. The team also interacted with district election officers, divisional commissioners, and other administrative officials during the visit. Officials said Bihar was the first state to begin the SIR exercise in the run-up to state polls with similar drives planned in other states. As part of the preparations for the 2025 elections, polling stations will also be reorganised to adhere to the standard of one booth per 1,200 voters. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The reorganisation aims to ensure that families are registered at the same polling station and that no voter has to travel more than 2km to cast their ballot. The move is intended to streamline the electoral process and make polling more accessible to voters across the state. Meanwhile, opposition parties have raised concerns about the timing and scale of the exercise. Leader of opposition in state assembly, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, alleged, "There is a big conspiracy to remove from voters' list the names of the poor who were getting free ration." RJD spokesperson Shakti Singh Yadav accused the EC of attempting to "tamper with" the rolls while Congress leader Shakeel Ahmad Khan questioned the practicality of completing the revision within a month. CPI-ML's Dipankar Bhattacharya, in a letter to the ECI, requested the postponement of what he called an "impractical" campaign so close to elections.
