Thane reports 10 new COVID cases in 3 days, health department on alert
THANE: As many as ten COVID-19 patients were detected in the last three days within the Thane Municipal Corporation area, officials informed.
The patients with mild symptoms are being treated at home, informed Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao, who also instructed the civic health department and private hospitals to remain vigilant for COVID-19 testing.
Additionally, a special 19-bed ward has now been prepared at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, and RTPCR testing facilities have also been made operational.
"The ten COVID-19 patients are being treated at home, and their condition is stable. Our health centres have sufficient stock of medicines, and testing kits are also available," informed Chief Medical Officer Chetana Nitil.

Youth who died at Salem hospital tests positive for COVID-19
A 25-year-old person, who reportedly tested positive for COVID-19, died at the Salem Government Hospital on Thursday. The youth, a resident of Kolathur near Mettur, was admitted to the Mettur Government Hospital owing to renal failure on Wednesday. While in the hospital, he tested positive for COVID-19. Following this, he was referred to the Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital (GMKMCH), where he later died, officials said. Dean of the hospital J. Devi Meenal said the deceased had suffered from kidney failure and other infections. 'No need to panic' A total of 293 fresh cases of COVID-19 were reported during May in Tamil Nadu. Of these, 148 are currently under observation, an official release said. Speaking at an event in Chennai on Saturday, Health Minister Ma. Subramanian reiterated that there was no need to panic over the current COVID-19 situation. Noting that 19 samples from Tamil Nadu were sent to the National Institute of Virology for whole genome sequencing, he said the results showed that the infections were due to non-virulent strains of Omicron. The Union Health Ministry, in a circular to all States, stressed the need for frequent hand washing and cough etiquette. 'They have said that it is good for persons with co-morbidities and the elderly to wear masks in public places,' Mr. Subramanian said, adding that it was not mandatory. He said Tamil Nadu had adequate health infrastructure in terms of beds and oxygen capacity and dengue cases were also under control in the State. There have been four deaths due to dengue since the start of the year, he added.

People with respiratory or heart issues were asked to limit outdoor activity until the smoke and dust cleared out. The Albuquerque-Bernalillo County Air Quality Program issued a health alert on Saturday due to elevated smoke levels. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is in the Moderate to Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range, with PM2.5 (fine particulate matter) concentrations at 1.1–1.5 times the World Health Organization's annual guideline, per IQAir and local reports. Visibility has been reduced to 6–10 miles in some areas, with haze obscuring the Sandia Mountains, particularly in the morning. Sensitive groups, including children, older adults, pregnant women, and those with respiratory conditions or heart disease, are advised to limit outdoor activities. Symptoms like coughing or shortness of breath may occur, and those with a COVID-19 history face heightened risks. Several meteorologists on X suggested that southerly winds are pushing smoke from wildfires in northern Mexico into the Rio Grande Valley, including Albuquerque. These fires, likely seasonal or prescribed burns, are contributing to elevated PM2.5, PM10, and carbon monoxide levels. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) noted on Friday that smoke and aerosols from burning activities in northern Mexico are being transported northward, affecting regions like El Paso and potentially Albuquerque.

Govt issues directions to review Covid preparedness in hospitals
Jaipur: With Covid-19 cases resurfacing in the state, the health department has issued directions to its officials in all districts to review hospital preparedness at the district and sub-district levels, as well as in medical colleges and all other inpatient care facilities. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Hospitals and health care facilities have been asked to ensure availability of diagnostics, essential drugs, isolation beds, medical oxygen, ICU, and ventilator-supported beds. "We have received the genome sequencing report from Pune and found that two variants circulating in the state are not the strains of concern and interest, but they are categorised as strains of monitoring. Currently, we have found that the symptoms are mild. But, we are taking precautions. We directed officials to ensure preparedness for treatment and management of Covid-19," a senior health department official told TOI. Health department also directed officials to conduct mock drills to ensure functionality of oxygen plants and overall oxygen preparedness. Govt will create awareness on promoting community observance of hand and respiratory hygiene, and hygienic behaviour such as cough etiquette (covering mouth or nose during coughing or sneezing) and no spitting in public places. Govt will also monitor health of vulnerable people such as the elderly, people with comorbidities, and those with immune-deficiency status. They may be advised to avoid poorly ventilated or crowded places.
