SC grants protection to minor girl forced into marriage, issues notice to Bihar, Delhi police
New Delhi, June 18 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday stepped in to protect a 16-year-old girl from Bihar who alleged she was forcibly married to a man twice her age and subjected to repeated abuse.
The court directed both the Bihar Director General of Police and the Delhi Police Commissioner to ensure her safety, along with that of her friend who helped her escape the marriage and now faces kidnapping charges.
A bench comprising Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan issued the directions while hearing a petition filed by the girl through her friend. The petition sought annulment of the marriage under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, and protection from any coercive action by the police.
The girl, who had just appeared for her Class 10 board examinations, was allegedly married off on December 9, 2024, under pressure from her family.
The man she was married to, a 33-year-old civil contractor, reportedly demanded the marriage as repayment for financial support extended to the family.
According to the plea, the girl was sent to live with him immediately after the ceremony and was denied return to her parental home.
She alleged that her in-laws pressured her to bear a child and blocked her from continuing her education.
The petition further claimed that she was subjected to emotional and physical abuse, especially after she resisted sexual advances.
In January 2025, her maternal uncle managed to bring her back to her parents' home temporarily. However, her pleas to terminate the marriage and resume her studies were ignored.
On March 31, 2025, the girl fled her home with the help of a friend and has been on the run since, fearing for her life.
The petition revealed that her husband made public threats to kill her, reportedly saying he would 'happily go to jail' for it.
Her mother subsequently filed a kidnapping case against her friend at Piplawan Naubatpur Police Station in Patna, allegedly concealing the fact that the girl had been married off.
The petition emphasised the urgency of the situation fearing that she would be killed if apprehended or forced to return. She urged the Court to protect her from police action until the matter is fully adjudicated.
Taking note of the threat to the minor's life, the Supreme Court ordered both Bihar and Delhi Police to provide the girl and her friend with emergency contact numbers for immediate assistance and to ensure their security.
The court also directed the police chiefs to submit a status report before the next hearing and issued notices to the girl's mother and the civil contractor husband, who have been named as parties in the case.
The matter is scheduled for further hearing in July.

The Fast Track Mahila Court in Erode on Wednesday (June 18, 2025) sentenced a 36-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor girl in 2020. According to the prosecution, G. Moorthy, who was employed at a brick manufacturing unit, frequently visited the home of a co-worker and became acquainted with his daughter, a Class 10 student. He gifted her a mobile phone and maintained frequent contact. Following a complaint lodged by the girl's parents, the Arachalur police rescued her and registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, and sections of the IPC related to kidnapping. After the trial, Judge C. Sornakumar sentenced Moorthy to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexual assault, five years for kidnapping, and one year for marrying a minor. The sentences will run concurrently. A fine of ₹35,000 was also imposed. The judge recommended that the State government provide a compensation of ₹2 lakh to the victim. Moorthy has been lodged in Coimbatore Central Prison.

LG grants sanction to prosecute police officers in embezzlement and forgery case
New Delhi: Lieutenant governor VK Saxena on Wednesday granted sanction to prosecute two Delhi Police officers in an alleged case of embezzlement and forgery registered by the economic offence wing (EOW) of the force. According to an internal inquiry by the licensing unit of the Delhi Police, discrepancies were found in the deposit of fees related to the issuing and renewing of licenses for casual performances, hotels and guest houses, eating houses, printing presses, and firearms. A case was registered at the EOW police station in May 2018 against head constable (executive) Rakesh Sharma and constable (executive) Khushi Ram for criminal breach of trust, forgery, criminal conspiracy, and other related sections, along with the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000. The LG's office said the possibility of disciplinary action against the accused was also under consideration, pending the outcome of the prosecution. Investigations revealed that instead of issuing system-generated receipts, cash was collected through fraudulently generated fake receipts between Sept 2016 and Feb 2018. Seeking the prosecution sanction, the home department of Delhi govt said that Delhi Police's internal investigation indicated the issuance of forged fee receipts at an arms licence renewal counter No. 2, which was manned by HC Rakesh Sharma during the period of March 2017 to Feb 2018. The two accused had allegedly created a fake receipt format, bypassing the official cash application software, and printed receipts using the same printer as genuine receipts. "This pointed to a potential collusion between the dealing assistant and the cashier, Khushi Ram. The forensic reports and the chargesheet filed by the EOW concluded that there was sufficient evidence against head constable Rakesh Sharma and constable Khushi Ram," said an official.

‘Provide full security': SC directs Bihar, Delhi senior cops to ensure safety of minor girl seeking annulment of marriage
The Supreme Court Wednesday asked the Bihar director general of police and Delhi Police commissioner to provide security to a girl who was allegedly forced into a marriage with a contractor, and is now seeking its annulment after escaping from her in-laws' house. A bench of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan also directed the senior police officers to ensure that no harm is caused to her or her friend who held her escape. The court also sought a status report from the police on the next date of hearing on July 15. In her plea, the girl claimed to have been forcibly married to Bihar-based contractor Jai Shankar on December 9, 2024, when she was 16 and a half years old, towards the repayment of the debts owed by her parents. Alleging physical abuse by the 33-year-old man, she also sought the annulment of her marriage with him under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006. 'Her husband, who is a civil contractor, claimed that the petitioner's parents were indebted to them and she would have to continue in the marriage rather than go for further studies to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher or a lawyer,' her plea said. The girl also claimed that she was on the run with a friend, and feared for their lives if they returned to Bihar. She said she was sent away immediately after the wedding ceremony, even though her Class 10 board examinations were due to start. She said she had been assured that she would return to her parents after two days, but was not allowed to do so 'by her in-laws who claimed to have given and spent a lot of money for the marriage and repeatedly told her that they wanted a baby'.
