Radical Cup Australia: Jordan Cutts, Ruairidh Avern continue strong start for Arise Racing

West Australian08-05-2025

West Australia-based Arise Racing has continued their bright start to the Radical Cup Australia championships with a record-equalling weekend in Sydney.
Four WA drivers sat in the championship - broadcast live on 7Plus - top five after Phillip Island's season opening weekend, and after a tense second round, all four consolidated their positions.
Cooper Cutts narrowly missed the title in 2024 and has started 2025 with a point to prove, sitting atop the driver's standings eight races into the season with 354 points after a flawless performance at Sydney Motorsport Park.
Arise pair Bryce Moore and Chris Reindler couldn't be separated, equal in third while Albany rookie Ruairidh Avern is just eight points behind them in fourth after claiming a podium position in just his second round of racing.
Cutts' lead in the championship comes off the back of an untouchable round in Sydney, where the young gun topped every practice session, secured pole position in and won all four 25-minute sprint races.
It was Cutts' fourth round win, equalling the most round wins in the category held by 2023 series winner, Alex Gardner.
It was a far more intense weekend for the field's youngest driver, Avern, who overcame a rough first qualifying session with five first-lap overtakes to claim third in the first sprint.
He gained four spots from 10th in Saturday's second race and, despite suffering a 15-second penalty, claimed sixth and fourth to round out the event on Sunday, putting himself on the podium in third overall for the weekend.
The podium extends Avern's lead in the rookie standings over Mark Cirillo.
Radical Cup Australia, which started in 2022, is back on track in four weeks' time at Queensland Raceway across May 30 to June 1.
The five-round 2025 series supports Shannons SpeedSeries.

‘Savage': Video shows former Australian Olympian whipping horse 42 times

Equestrian Australia is investigating former Australian Olympian Heath Ryan over a video that shows him whipping a horse 42 times. The footage was originally shared to US-based Facebook account Dressage Hub, before being taken down and re-uploaded to their YouTube, where it has sparked outrage in the comments section. A narrator over the footage claims that Ryan 'savagely' whipped the horse '42 times without stopping while in training. It was posted by a rider in Australia. Once the report was filed with Equestrian Australia, they asked her to remove the video, to cover it up. 'It's never-ending. This horse is completely shut down. It's traumatised in every state. This video infuriates me to the core, and I'm trying to remain calm.' EA said it was investigating whether the incident broke its welfare policieswhich protect horses and riders from physical, social, and emotional harm, as well as the international code of conduct, which says horses 'must not be subjected to methods which are abusive or cause fear'. Horse whipping is not allowed at elite levels and is heavily regulated against. Ryan could face permanent expulsion from EA and the International Federation for Equestrian Sports if he is found to have breached the code. 'Equestrian Australia is extremely alarmed and concerned by the treatment of the horse shown in this footage,' the organisation said in a statement. 'The person depicted in the video is a member of Equestrian Australia. EA is currently investigating this matter ... and will have more to say about the matter when we have more information.'

Perth Scorchers sign West Australian quick Bryce Jackson on one-year deal for Big Bash League

West Australian breakout quick Bryce Jackson will be given the chance to press for a Perth Scorchers debut, handed a one-year contract extension after the departure of Jason Behrendorff. It means Jackson — who starred for WA in one-day cricket last summer — will be in the queue of quicks vying for a spot after Behrendorff left to take up a three-year deal with Melbourne Renegades. The Scorchers are expected to bolster their pace stocks at this month's Big Bash League draft. Jackson spent most of last season on the Scorchers' list. He signed on the eve of the season as a local replacement player for Mitch Marsh, which meant he fell out of the squad when the star all-rounder returned late in the campaign. He has already shown some loyalty to the Scorchers. The 25-year-old knocked back an offer from Brisbane Heat to stay in Perth last season. In just four one-day cup matches for WA, he took 12 wickets at 15.58, to finish second in that competition's player-of-the-year voting. The Albany product is in Queensland training with Australia A ahead of a series against Sri Lanka A in the Northern Territory. 'It's exciting to be back with the Scorchers and signing a full contract this year is another step in the right direction,' Jackson said. 'I got a nice taste of things from being the local replacement last season by training with the group, working my own craft and learning plenty about the tactical side of things.' Jackson said his first year on the list taught him how the best players in the State prepare for matches. 'The preparation, in particular, was a huge takeaway,' he said. 'It's different to domestic cricket with all the travel and tight turnarounds, so I'll benefit a lot from learning those routines and prioritising certain aspects of my preparation. 'Hearing the noise at ground level on game day was another thing, and The Furnace is unbelievable. 'It is so, so loud and incredibly exciting to be out there when someone takes a hanger or bowls someone.' The Scorchers have three spots remaining for local players. Nick Hobson, Matthew Spoors, Sam Fanning and veteran Andrew Tye are all without a deal for next season.
