Hajiji: Adopt TVET for economic opportunities

The Star20-05-2025

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah's youth should broaden their perspectives and view Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a primary option for shaping a brighter future, rather than merely as an alternative route, says Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor ( pic ).
The Chief Minister said TVET now plays a major role in driving the state's economic and social development, in line with technological transformation and current industry demands.
'TVET not only equips individuals with practical skills, but it also represents empowerment, job opportunities and economic growth,' he said at the launch of the Sabah TVET Council here yesterday.
His speech was delivered by Deputy Chief Minister III, Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, who is also the State Works Minister.
Hajiji said that the TVET courses currently offered have been aligned with the needs of the job market and the fast-growing industrial sector, making it a stable and viable career path for young people.
'I urge the youth in the state not to hesitate in joining the TVET sector. This is the time to shift perceptions and view TVET as a smart option that opens doors to becoming professionals, entrepreneurs and innovators,' he said.
He said that the establishment of the Sabah TVET Council demonstrates the state government's dedication to enhancing the technical training ecosystem.
This initiative aims to coordinate more than 160 TVET institutions across the state, ensuring that graduates are adequately prepared for the workforce.

Pan Borneo Highway construction from Beaufort to Sipitang progressing despite setbacks

Shahelmey presents rope to signify the handing over of the cows to a representative of the mosque/surau. PUTATAN (June 3): Construction of the Pan Borneo Highway from Beaufort to Sipitang is progressing, with Package 1 expected to be completed by 2026, according to Sabah Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya. 'Most of the road is completed, with only a few bridges and sections pending. I hope the Public Works Department (PWD) will monitor the project closely to ensure its timely completion,' said Shahelmey. However, Package 2 is facing several technical challenges, including issues related to time extensions and arbitration, which have slowed progress. 'I've been informed that several decisions have been reached, and we expect the pace of work to improve. Completion is anticipated around 2027. Again, I urge PWD to monitor the contractor's performance closely,' he added. Shahelmey also addressed a recent incident involving a burst water pipe at one of the road sections under Package 2. The damage required excavation work, during which a motorcyclist fell into the hole at night. 'Although warning signboards and barriers were installed, the motorcyclist accidentally swerved and fell into the hole. PWD has met with the rider, obtained a police report, and determined the incident was due to user negligence,' he explained. He emphasized the importance of effective traffic management during construction, reminding PWD staff and contractors to regularly check and reinforce safety barriers. 'Sometimes barriers become loose due to weather or wind, and are not properly restored. This must not happen. They need to be secured consistently,' Shahelmey said. He also urged road users to adhere to posted signs and regulations, such as speed limits and diversions, to ensure everyone's safety. On the arbitration matter, Shahelmey revealed that the contractor for Package 2 had disputed aspects of the department's design. 'These are contract management issues currently being addressed,' he concluded.

UMS water supply sufficient, says Shahelmey

Shahelmey PUTATAN (June 3): The amount of water entering the tank at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is sufficient, said Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya. Shahelmey said that he had asked the Water Department to keep records of the amount of water entering Tank R13 throughout the month of May. 'So, from 19th May until yesterday, the amount of water entering Tank R13 was at a sufficient level — even more than sufficient,' he told reporters on Tuesday. However, from 14th to 19th May, one of UMS's water pumps was faulty and had to be repaired. 'So, during that period, only one pump was operating, which might have caused the amount of water pumped from R13 into the UMS campus to decrease.' The minister added that, together with the Water Department, he had observed and monitored the inflow of water from the department into Tank R13 at UMS. 'And according to our records, the amount of water is sufficient,' he said. 'However, I made a visit to UMS two weeks ago to see the real situation because the Water Department informed that there was water, while UMS informed that there was insufficient water.' He added that, hence, one matter that was agreed upon in the joint meeting between the department and UMS following his site visit on that day was that both parties agreed the amount of water entering the tank was sufficient. 'Only at present, the indicator in Tank R13, owned by the Water Department, is not functioning,' said Shahelmey. The faulty indicator has confused UMS in arranging their pump operation schedule, he added. As a result of the meeting, discussions and also the visit, the Water Department agreed to ensure that they provide a report on the water level at Tank R13 every hour to UMS so that the latter can arrange their pumping operations on campus, he said. 'And for the damaged indicator, the Water Department informed that they have already ordered a new one, and we hope that in one or two weeks, the indicator will arrive and be installed. Once it is installed, I will visit again to ensure that there is no more miscommunication or lack of coordination between both parties,' said Shahelmey. He asked for cooperation between the Water Department and UMS to ensure university students can focus on their studies and examinations this June without worrying about water supply disruptions. 'I want them to ensure the smooth supply of water to the UMS campus, especially in June, when foundation students will be sitting for their examinations together with undergraduate students, so they can focus on their studies without being disrupted by existing water supply issues,' he said. Prior to this, UMS Vice-Chancellor Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor issued a statement against the Water Department's claim of sufficient water supply to the campus. Dr Kasim described the department's statement as misleading and an insult to the university community, stating that if there was enough water, students would not be shouting and protesting. He also claimed that the real issue lies in the location of UMS and the way the water supply is distributed. The R13 tank has been fully operational since 2000 and serves other areas including Hospital Likas, 1Borneo Hypermall, Alamesra, Kingfisher and government buildings. He also alleged that UMS, which sits on higher ground, often ends up with little to no water once gravity sends it to lower-lying areas.

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor has hailed the RM31 billion three-phase project by Esteel Enterprise Sabah Sdn Bhd as a major milestone for the state's economic development. He said it would generate jobs, foster innovation and support local businesses. Speaking at the launch of the project's Phase 1 at the Sabah International Convention Centre yesterday, Hajiji thanked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Singapore-based Green Esteel Group for backing Sabah's industrial ambitions. 'This project is not merely a financial commitment. It is a vote of your confidence in our vision and in our capacity to foster growth and development,' he said in his speech. Hajiji added that the steel manufacturing plant, located in the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (Sogip), is expected to create a wide range of 'ripple effects' in sectors such as green technology and local entrepreneurship. He said job creation must benefit Sabahans first and urged industry players to prioritise the training and upskilling of the local workforce. Advertisement 'I want all industry players to invest in the training and development of our local workforce and to comply with this fundamental requirement as a core principle of our commitment to local development,' he said. Hajiji also credited more than a dozen federal and state agencies for their role in fast-tracking approvals for the Esteel project and assured the group that their 'trust is well-placed'. 'Together, we have the potential to achieve remarkable outcomes, leading the way for growth and development,' he said. Hajiji reaffirmed that Sabah will maintain its investor-friendly stance, noting that the state has implemented policies to attract more investors. 'We are committed to creating a conducive environment that nurtures investments and fosters collaboration,' he said, adding that besides Sogip, the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park has also seen increased tenancy over the past four years. Due to high investor demand, Hajiji said the state government had approved three new industrial parks in Kota Belud, Beaufort and Kudat under its Blue Economy initiative. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
