(Reuters) - Vancouver police said on Sunday said that a number of people had been killed and multiple others were injured after a driver drove into a crowd at street festival in the western Canadian city.
The driver has been taken into custody, police said in a post on social media platform X.

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump lashed out at prosecutors in Israel over the corruption trial that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has faced, saying Washington, having given billions of dollars worth of aid to Israel, was not going to "stand for this". Netanyahu "right now" was in the process of negotiating a deal with Hamas, Trump said, without giving further details. On Friday, the Republican president told reporters that he believes a ceasefire is close. Hamas has said it is willing to free remaining hostages in Gaza under any deal to end the war, while Israel says it can only end if Hamas is disarmed and dismantled. Hamas refuses to lay down its arms. Interest in resolving the Gaza conflict has heightened in the wake of the US and Israeli bombing of Iran's nuclear facilities. A ceasefire to the 12-day Israel-Iran conflict went into effect early this week. - Reuters

Police deployed scores of officers in riot gear around government buildings, parliament and nearby Pionirski Park, where throngs of Vucic's backers from across the country gathered in a counter-protest. Months of protests across the country, including university shutdowns, have rattled Vucic, a populist, whose second term ends in 2027, when there are also parliamentary elections scheduled. Vucic's opponents accuse him and his allies of ties to organised crime, violence against rivals and curbing media freedoms, something they deny. The student protest is set to last until 9 p.m. (1900 GMT) at Slavija Square and Nemanjina Avenue, where most of the government offices are located. The protesters, who want the government to heed their demands by the end of the protest, have pledged non-violence. Vucic has previously refused snap elections. His Progressive Party-led coalition holds 156 of 250 parliamentary seats. On Saturday, Vucic said unspecified "foreign powers" were behind the protest. In the days ahead of the protest, police arrested about a dozen anti-government activists, charging them with undermining the constitution and terrorism. All denied the charges. Protests by students, opposition, teachers, workers and farmers began last December after 16 people died on November 1 in a Novi Sad railway station roof collapse. Protesters blame corruption for the disaster. The Belgrade rally coincides with St. Vitus Day, venerated by most Serbs, which marks the 1389 Battle of Kosovo with Ottoman Turks. Duterte this week asked the Senate, which sits as the impeachment court, to throw out her case, saying the House violated the constitutional ban on initiating impeachment proceedings against the same official more than once within a year. Prosecutors said Duterte's arguments were "baseless' and that her only legal strategy is "to have the case dismissed and avoid trial,' according to a copy of their official response sent to the Senate on Friday. They asked the Senate to convict Duterte, remove her from office and "order her perpetual disqualification from holding any public office.' The vice president is facing charges that include misusing public funds and plotting to assassinate President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. after their alliance collapsed. She has denied the allegations. At least two-thirds of the 24-member Senate needs to vote to convict Duterte, a top contender for the 2028 presidential election, when Marcos must step down after a constitutionally limited six-year term.
