National Guard providing security for ICE officers, US says
– National Guard troops are now protecting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in and around Los Angeles, marking an expansion of their duties since being deployed by US President Donald Trump this week.
Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said on June 10 that the Guard was providing security for federal law enforcement as they continue operations 'to remove the worst of the worst of Los Angeles'.
Some of the soldiers had been guarding federal buildings before this.
Ms McLaughlin added that 'if any rioters attack ICE law enforcement officers, military personnel have the authority to temporarily detain them until law enforcement makes the arrest'.
'The violence against ICE law enforcement must end,' she said, adding that the soldiers were also helping to safeguard federal property.
ICE posted two photographs on social media platform X showing troops providing protection as officers made immigration-related arrests.
Soldiers in camouflage and holding automatic weapons stood nearby while two suspects were being handcuffed.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said earlier in the day that she had 'no idea' what they were doing aside from guarding several federal buildings.
Los Angeles has faced five days of protests touched off by a wave of immigration raids, with crowds clashing at times with law enforcement and nearly 380 people arrested since the weekend.
Mr Trump has authorised the deployment of up to 4,000 National Guard troops to the city and 700 Marines – a move made over the objections of California Governor Gavin Newsom and Ms Bass, both Democrats.
The mayor and governor argue that the show of force is unnecessary and risks inflaming tensions.
Ms Bass has said the local authorities have the situation under control, and that bringing in more troops could escalate the unrest rather than contain it. BLOOMBERG

The seawall project expands on a 2014 plan by the capital Jakarta's government to protect the city from rising sea levels and land subsidence that have caused frequent flooding along the north Java coast. Mr Prabowo said he would form an agency to run the giant seawall project, stretching from Banten to East Java provinces and which could take 20 years to complete. Officials have said the wall would be about 700km long. 'One of the most vital infrastructure projects, which is a mega project, that we need to do promptly is the giant seawall across the northern Java coast,' Mr Prabowo said in a speech at an infrastructure event. '(Sea) waters have threatened the lives of our people,' he said, citing some towns in central Java. Sea levels along Indonesian coasts rose an average of 4.25 millimetres annually from 1992 to 2024, but the rate has accelerated in recent years due to climate change, according to the country's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency. Mr Prabowo said he had invited investment from countries such as China and Japan, without elaborating. Experts say Jakarta is sinking due to excessive extraction of groundwater, leading the central government to plan its move to a new capital in the jungles of Borneo island. Spanish judge calls on top Sanchez ally to testify over alleged public works kickbacks
MADRID - A Spanish Supreme Court judge on Thursday invited a senior official in Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's Socialist Party to testify, saying there was evidence he was involved in kickbacks from construction companies in exchange for public contracts. In a report provided to Judge Leopoldo Puente, police said they had a recording of Santos Cerdan, a lawmaker and the Socialist Party's organisational secretary, discussing kickbacks with former Transport Minister Jose Luis Abalos, according to the left-leaning radio station Cadena Ser. The judge, who unsealed the case on Thursday, called for Cerdan to testify on June 25 after finding "there is strong evidence of the possible involvement" of Cerdan in the "improper awarding of the aforementioned public works in exchange for a price," according to a court statement. Such acts constitute crimes of criminal organisation and bribery, the statement said. Sanchez's fragile coalition has been hit by a series of allegations over the past year that have threatened to destabilise the government, including a high-profile probe into whether his wife Begona Gomez used her status to influence her business dealings. Cerdan on Thursday said he had no recollection of the conversation. "I have not been involved in any such conversation and this afternoon or tomorrow, when we know the contents of the report, I will call a press conference to which you are all invited," he said in comments to the press in parliament. The Socialist Party on Wednesday said Cerdan was innocent and would provide explanations once the police report was made public.
