New Trader Joe's Location Dubbed 'Insane' as 13 States Get New Stores

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A new Trader Joe's location has been dubbed "insane" by a customer as it is directly across the street from another Trader Joe's. Shauna Green, a Trader Joe's shopper, posted a video to TikTok showing her standing outside of the new store location in the Los Angeles suburb of Sherman Oaks. When she pans the camera around, a separate large Trader Joe's can be seen right behind her. The company is well aware that it is right by another location, and has called this new store "Sherman Oaks, too." Trader Joe's has been contacted via their media portal for comment. Why It Matters The store opening is part of a new 21-store expansion across 13 states by the company. Despite grocery prices projected to rise because of President Donald Trump's tariffs and inflation, Trader Joe's is still banking on making a large enough profit to open new locations. According to a March 2025 YouGov poll, Trader Joe's is the 7th most popular grocery store in the United States. Trader Joe's signage is illuminated outside a store in Houston on March 24, 2025. Sprecher/AP Photo What To Know Green told viewers this new store will operate alongside the older one for at least three years, as the old one just renewed its lease. Commenters under her video are pointing out that now people will have two chances to look for products that may be out of stock at the other store. Also, according to some commenters, the previous location had "the world's smallest parking lot," so this new shop will be beneficial to drivers. Green said a cashier told her these locations were a lot like how many Starbucks have locations right next to each other, although Green pointed out in her video that Starbucks stores are not normally directly opposite each other. The new Trader Joe's locations are opening even as economists who spoke with Newsweek about the impact of tariffs on imports in May, projected that a full tariff rollout could result in empty store shelves in the U.S. So far this has not been borne out, as a Circana report from June 9 found that food and beverage prices have gone up by 2.9 percent, but noted that this rise is from tight supplies, not tariffs. This may be due to the tariffs changing rapidly, with some being canceled and others being held up by the courts. Democrats in the Senate Joint Economic Committee are launching an investigation into the impact of Trump's tariffs on grocery costs across the country. Aaron M. Sprecher/AP Photo What People Are Saying Shauna Green on TikTok: "Want to know something actually insane? I just went to the new Trader Joe's that opened in Sherman Oaks. This is the other Trader Joe's. Literally across the street." Trader Joe's website: "We've consulted our maps and compass and have found a terrific location for a store in Sherman Oaks, CA. Please join Captain Matt and Crew for the Grand Opening Celebration. We look forward to seeing you!" What Happens Next The stores in Sherman Oaks will likely operate across from each other for the next three years.

Barclays appoints ex-HSBC executive as UAE private bank head

Barclays has named former HSBC banker Farzad Billimoria as the new head of private bank for the UAE. Billimoria will oversee the local team, governance, and drive growth in the UAE, positioning it as a 'strategic hub' for the broader Middle East and international corridors. He will operate out of Dubai and start on 1 July, pending regulatory approval. Billimoria brings three decades of expertise in financial services, with experience in private banking, wealth management, and retail banking. At HSBC, he was the senior executive officer and head of private bank for the UAE. During his stint, he led the establishment of HSBC Private Bank (Suisse) offices in the Dubai International Financial Centre and Abu Dhabi Global Market. Additionally, Billimoria launched HSBC's first onshore private bank booking centre in the UAE and managed the growth of the Non-Resident Indians business in the region. He has handled some of the UAE's largest ultra-high-net-worth client portfolios and relationships, the UK-based bank said. Annabelle Bryde, Barclays' head of private bank international, will be his reporting line. Bryde said: 'The Middle East presents significant growth opportunities for Barclays with its expanding influence on global markets and increasing wealth generation. We are excited to welcome Farzad, who brings with him a strong blend of leadership and extensive local market experience. 'His appointment reflects our ambition to further elevate the importance and priority of the region, alongside accelerating our growth plans in the UAE.' In November 2024, Barclays revealed plans to launch a new private bank booking centre in Singapore, aiming to expand its presence in Asia. The Singapore centre is expected to start operations by 2026. It will support local asset booking for affluent clients, providing an integrated 'one-bank' proposition through collaboration with Barclays Investment Bank.
