‘A Minecraft Movie' Looks To Edge ‘Sinners' At Weekend Box Office

Although Sinners is giving A Minecraft Movie a run for its money, the latter is looking like it will win the domestic box office for a third consecutive weekend.
Written and directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan in dual roles, the vampire thriller Sinners opened Friday in 3,308 North American theaters. The film played in Thursday previews where it earned $4.7 million.
While Sinners is projected to earn $18 million on Friday — $1.5 million more than A Minecraft Movie — Deadline is projecting that Jack Black and Jason Momoa's big-screen adaptation of Mojang Studios' iconic video game Minecraft will once again win the Easter Weekend box office.
A Minecraft Movie, which opened on April 4 and earned $163 million in its opening frame and $78.5 million more last weekend, is projected by Deadline to earn $44 million from 4,032 North American theaters through Sunday.
Sinners, meanwhile is projected by Deadline to earn $40 million in its opening weekend frame for a No. 2 finish.
The numbers for both films fall closely in line with pre-release projections from most of Hollywood's trade publications, which targeted a $40 million to $45 million take for A Minecraft Movie.
Deadline, however, gave the edge to A Minecraft Movie with an estimated take of $47 million. Variety, though, projected that Sinners could earn anywhere from $40 million to $50 million.
Either way, Warner Bros. is the big winner at this weekend's box office since it's the studio behind both A Minecraft Movie and Sinners.
A Minecraft Movie eclipsed the $300 million mark in ticket sales Thursday when it earned $6.5 million to boost its domestic tally to $303.3 million heading into Friday. Combined with its $273.3 million in international receipts, A Minecraft Movie ended the day Thursday with $576.6 million in earnings at the worldwide box office.

While A Minecraft Movie and Sinners are poised to take the No. 1 and 2 spots at the domestic box office, Angel Studios' The King of Kings may end up being the weekend's biggest success story.
The animated biblical movie is projected by Deadline to earn $17 million from Friday through Easter Sunday — a mere $2 million less than its recording-breaking opening frame from April 11-14. Should the projection hold up, it will boost The King of King's domestic tally to $45 million.
Two other films that opened last week— 20th Century Studio's The Amateur and A24's Warfare — are projected by Deadline to earn $8 million and $4 million, respectively to take the No. 4 and 5 spots at this weekend's domestic box office.

Condon's adaptation isn't the only time the Spider Woman has made her way to the big screen. Héctor Babenco directed the first film adaptation of the novel, which premiered in 1985. The critically acclaimed film starred William Hurt, Raúl Juliá, and Sônia Braga. Hurt won the Best Actor award when the film premiered at the 1985 Cannes Film Festival, as well as the Academy Award and BAFTA for Best Actor. Babenco became the first Brazilian filmmaker to earn an Oscar nomination for Best Director, and the film was the first Brazilian production to receive a nod for Best Picture. It also received a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination. Lopez is not only the star of the film, but also serves as an executive producer alongside Luna, her ex-husband Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and 12 others. The movie debuted at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival back in January and received a standing ovation from the audience, which reportedly left Lopez in tears. The mother of two previously opened up about taking the role during an interview with Variety's Awards Circuit podcast in November. She called it "the most challenging and rewarding role I've ever had." "It's a dark story, but also one about love and survival — about helping each other through hard times," Lopez added. "I think that's a message we really need right now." She recalled Kander being with her in the studio when she recorded her songs. "He's [98] years old and still so full of life," Lopez said. Russell Simmons sues HBO for $20 million over doc alleging sexual misconduct
NEW YORK — Russell Simmons has filed a lawsuit against HBO and the makers of the 2020 documentary 'On the Record,' claiming defamation for their allegations of sexual assault and misconduct. The record executive, who's seeking $20 million in damages, is also accusing them of ignoring or suppressing evidence from witnesses who 'refuted and rebutted the accusations falsely made' against Simmons, according to lawsuit filed in New York. 'Despite voluminous support for Mr. Simmons in the form of credible information, persuasive evidence, witness statements and calls for further investigation by notable members of the media, politics and the civil rights movement, the defendants simply disregarded it, and released, and continue to re-release globally, a film that tremendously disparaged and damaged Mr. Simmons with salacious and defamatory accusations that he vehemently denies,' his attorneys, Imran Ansari and Carla DiMare, said in a written statement to Variety. In the complaint, Ansari claims the streamer ignored multiple polygraph tests that 'would have been discovered with due diligence and adherence to accepted journalistic standards.' The documentary made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January of 2020 and detailed sexual assault and misconduct allegations against the Def Jam Records founder from multiple women. The project was originally to be produced as a part of Oprah Winfrey's deal with Apple TV, but the media mogul later withdrew from the film and it ultimately landed at HBO Max. Along with the $20 million, Simmons is requesting a court order to have the title removed from all of HBO's platforms. Simmons has faced multiple lawsuits accusing him of misconduct. More than 20 women have come forward alleging sexual assault, many of whom participated in the documentary. A spokesperson for Warner Bros., the parent of HBO, told TMZ the company 'stand[s] by the filmmakers and their process, and will vigorously defend ourselves against these unfounded allegations.'
