With an 8-2 win Friday over Austria at the world curling championship, Canada secured enough qualifying points to secure an Olympic quota spot at next winter's Olympic Games in Italy.
The Canadians clinched first place and will take a 10-1 record into their round-robin finale against American Korey Dropkin in the evening session.
The victory also secured a spot for Canada in the men's team discipline at the 2026 Winter Games in Milan-Cortina. The winning squad at the Montana's Canadian Curling Trials in November will wear the Maple Leaf at the Olympics.
World Curling is expected to formally announce the teams that have secured Olympic berths once the world championship is complete.

Canada defeats the U.S. 1-0 to advance to CONCACAF Women's U-20 Championship final

ALAJUELA – Lea Larouche's 56th-minute goal lifted Canada to a 1-0 victory over the seven-time champion United States in semifinal play Friday at the CONCACAF Women's Under-20 Championship. It was just the Americans' fourth loss in 66 games at the CONCACAF tournament (57-4-5). And it marks the first time in tournament history that the U.S. will not be part of the championship game. Canada will face defending champion Mexico in Sunday's championship game at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto. Mexico, which defeated Canada 4-2 in earlier Group B play, blanked Costa Rica 4-0 in the other semifinal. All four teams had already accomplished their goal of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland by reaching the semifinals. Canada's goal came after Teegan Melenhorst's attempted chip deflected off one American defender past another to Larouche, who slid a shot under goalkeeper Caroline Birkel. Canada was awarded a penalty in the 67th minute after Annabelle Chukwu was taken down in the U.S. penalty box. But the call was negated by offside after video review. Three minutes later, U.S. substitute Mary Long hit the Canadian crossbar with a shot. Canadian goalkeeper Noelle Henning made a diving save in stoppage time to preserve the win. The U.S. outshot Canada 12-9 (5-2 in shots on target) and had 64.6 percent possession. Canada returns to the final for the first time since 2015, when it lost 1-0 to the U.S. It marks Mexico's fourth consecutive final, having won two of the previous three (2018 and 2023). Canada won the CONCACAF tournament in 2004 and 2008. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Canada has taken part in nine of the previous 11 editions of the FIFA U-20 tournament, missing out in 2010 and 2018. The Canadians lost 2-1 to Spain in the round of 16 at last year's FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia. Canada booked its ticket to the CONCACAF tournament by winning its qualifying group with ease in February. The Canadians outscored their qualifying opposition 43-0, dispatching Dominica 22-0, Bermuda 9-0 and host Trinidad and Tobago 12-0. The U.S. and Mexico, as the top-ranked countries in CONCACAF, skipped the qualifying round and were given direct entry to the CONCACAF championship. Canada and 23 other teams had to win their way there, with Costa Rica, Guyana, Nicaragua, Panama and Puerto Rico also topping their groups. — This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 6, 2025.

Players to watch as Calgary Stampeders kick off season and new era after roster overhaul

And so it begins. Article content The hopeful turnaround of the Calgary Stampeders following a few futile seasons kicks off Saturday against the visiting Hamilton Tiger-Cats at McMahon Stadium (5 p.m., TSN, CHQR 770 AM/107.3 FM the Edge, TSN). Article content Article content Are they headed for another down year, as ugly as their five-win playoff miss of 2024? Or is the Canadian Football League franchise now on the upturn? Article content Article content It's not like the Dave Dickenson & Co. sat on their hands and did nothing in the face of criticism offered over the last two campaigns. Article content They went out and made some noise, just as they promised they would in trying to U-turn their fortunes. Article content While the mission was to improve in all areas of the franchise — both on and off the field — it's the pigskin personnel that matters most to fans. Article content But the Stampeders didn't fall short on that, living up to their promise to be aggressive in the off-season. Article content The Red and White sent underachievers packing, made a monster trade and signed many sought-after free agents. Article content Good on them. Article content But stay tuned Saturday — and beyond — to see how it's turned out. Article content QB Vernon Adams Jr. Article content It's arguably the biggest signing by the Stamps in decades. The veteran CFL pivot is a top-three QB in the league and comes armed with a desire to win a Grey Cup. A championship has eluded him until this point. He's charismatic and talented and should bring excitement to the field as both a passer and runner. After all, they don't call him 'Big-Play V.A.' for nothing. So if nothing else, the offence should be fun once again, with no apologies for the vanilla flavour we've seen from QBs in recent years. Article content Article content WRs Dominique Rhymes and Tevin Jones Article content 'The Twins', as they bill themselves, are tall, rangy, talented pass-catchers, giving Adams two more dynamic targets to go with veterans Reggie Begelton, Jalen Philpot and Clark Barnes. It's quite the receiving corps actually, with Rhymes and Jones bringing as much bravado as three-time 1,000-yard-man Begelton. Rhymes is quite familiar with Adams, so that connection is strong — they hooked up for big passing gains with the BC Lions. And Jones, who has similar traits to Rhymes, should be familiar to Stamps fans, having run amok for 200-plus receiving yards on the Red and White last Labour Day.
