'Myaku-Myaku' cosplayer delights Osaka Expo visitors, amid calls to observe rules

The Mainichi04-05-2025

OSAKA -- Someone dressed up as Myaku-Myaku, the official mascot of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, was a recent star attraction at the Expo venue, with many visitors asking to take photos together and elementary school students reaching out for handshakes.
While social media opinion has been mixed on people entering the Expo venue in cosplay or fancy dress, the event's official website states that visitors can come in "wearing anything that is not prohibited." It points out, however, that visitors "may be refused entry if they are likely to cause (a) nuisance to other visitors or cause anxiety or fear," and further states that entry "may be refused if they are wearing a mask or clothing that obscures most of their face."
A Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition representative said of cosplaying at the venue, "We don't want people to stop it, and if people observe the rules, they can enter," while adding, "It's a question of degree. The approach is really case-by-case."
During the "Japan Expo" event, a festival of Japanese culture held on April 26 and 27 at the Expo venue, one cosplay stage participant pointed out, "Wearing noticeable outfits makes us easy targets. Just because we're abiding by the rules, that doesn't mean anything goes, and it's not good to go overboard. It's really difficult."
They continued, "Those who have been doing this for a long time want to cherish cosplay culture. I've made many friends through cosplay myself."

Japan Photo Journal: Production of traditional 'mizu-uchiwa' fans peaks ahead of summer

Traditionally crafted "mizu-uchiwa" fans, distinguished by their glossy luster and waterlike translucence, are seen at the Sumii Tomijiro Shoten fan store in Gifu on June 2, 2025, as production peaks ahead of Japan's sizzling summer. The fans are made by attaching ultrathin "gampi-shi" paper, which resembles oil blotting paper, to bamboo frames. They are finished with a natural lacquer and air-dried indoors for about 10 days using a technique from the Meiji era (1868-1912). Coming in around 20 designs with motifs such as ayu (sweetfish), morning glories and cormorant fishing with burning torches, they sell for 3,550 to 6,000 yen (around $25 to $42) each. The store's fourth-generation owner Kazunari Sumii, 62, said, "I hope people will enjoy summer with these cool-looking fans." Elon Musk Reportedly Fathered Child With Japanese Pop Star, Ayumi Hamasaki Says It's Not Her

In an interview with The New York Times that was published last week, Ashley St. Clair, a conservative influencer who announced that she gave birth to Elon Musk's 14th child in February, claimed that the world's richest man has also fathered a baby with a Japanese pop star. Unsurprisingly, this sparked an online frenzy of speculation, with many suggesting Ayumi Hamasaki as the potential mother. On Monday, she quashed that rumor. 'I've been keeping an eye on this, and I guess it's time for me to speak up. Elon Musk is not the father of [either of] my children,' she wrote on her Instagram story. The singer added that she could understand why people thought it was her as it was the 'sort of thing' she would do. Hamasaki continued, 'Even my mom laughed when she heard the rumors, saying, 'This seems kind of Ayu-like,' and if I were someone else, I'd probably be saying 'Ayu is the pop star [St Clair] was talking about, right?' But it's just not true. Setting aside my personal image, when my kids are old enough to start Googling things , I don't want them to run into the rumors and think they're true, so I'm firmly denying them.' About Ayumi Hamasaki J-pop royalty, Hamasaki is the best-selling solo artist in Japan's history, with sales exceeding 50 million units. She has the most number-one singles by a female singer and the most consecutive number-one hits by a solo artist. A Best , the first greatest hits album by Hamasaki, was released on the same day as Distance by Hikaru Utada . They were the two best-selling albums of the 2000s. At the end of 2019, Hamasaki gave birth to her first child, a son. Her second child, another boy, was born in the spring of 2021. She has never publicly revealed who is the father of either of her children. Hamasaki was married to Austrian actor and model Manuel Schwarz between 2011 and 2012. Her second marriage was to American medical student Tyson Bodkin from 2013 to 2016.
