Vasai-Virar civic body starts Covid screening
Vasai: With Covid-19 cases rising in Mumbai, the healthcare department of the Vasai Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) has started a screening campaign and kept beds aside in its hospitals as a precautionary measure.
"In the past week, we have screened 5,070 people for Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and carried out antigen tests, but there are no positive cases," said VVCMC medical officer Dr Bhakti Choudhary. The corporation has also reserved a 25-bedded ward at Jivdani hospital, Virar, and has made arrangements for liquid oxygen plants.
Awareness drives will be carried out in industrial areas, public places and residential neighbourhoods. The health department has also appealed to the public to promptly get tested if they experience any symptoms.
Meanwhile, 66 patients, including 31 from Mumbai, tested positive for Covid across the state, according to the state health department on Tuesday. Since Jan, the state has recorded 435 positive patients, including 310 from Mumbai.

No need to panic over COVID, says IMA
The Indian Medical Association has advised the public not to worry and panic unnecessarily over the resurgence of COVID. However, it was extremely important that all standard precautions were maintained to prevent disease transmission and to protect the vulnerable groups from contracting the disease, a statement issued by the Kerala IMA State president, and secretary, K. Sasidharan said in a statement here on Wednesday. IMA said that the Omicron variants caused only short-term symptomatic illness and that in Kerala, where there is a high level of primary vaccination coverage among the public, the risk of these variants causing severe disease was rare. Yet, people with relatively weak immune systems, such as those with serious chronic ailments like cancer, kidney diseases and heart diseases should be extremely careful. IMA pointed out that maintaining precautions was important as COVID cannot be easily distinguished from other seasonal infectious diseases through clinical symptoms alone. The risk of disease can be eliminated to a large extent through physical distancing, the use of masks, and hand hygiene. IMA has advocated the widespread use of masks in all healthcare centres. Visitors should be restricted in hospitals. People with respiratory symptoms should strictly avoid contact with others till their symptoms subside. It appealed to the public to cooperate with the diagnostic tests and treatment facilities arranged by the government and the Health department. IMA has extended its full cooperation to the government and the Health department to combat the COVID surge.

Delhi: Woman, 22, with pulmonary TB, dies after COVID infection
A 22-year-old woman suffering from bilateral respiratory tract infection and pulmonary tuberculosis succumbed after testing positive for COVID-19 - the fifth fatality due to the infection in the national capital this year, according to the Union Health Ministry. Delhi has seen an uptick in coronavirus infections, with 457 active cases at present. The woman had a history of pulmonary tuberculosis, bilateral lower respiratory tract infection, COVID pneumonia , and Type 1 Respiratory failure, according to the ministry. The government website did not say whether the woman was a city resident or was admitted to any health facility here. India's active COVID cases stand at 4,302, with Kerala remaining the most affected state, followed by Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Delhi, according to the Union Health Ministry COVID-19 dashboard. Karnataka sees 324 Covid cases, death toll rises to 6
While 153 new positive cases were reported in the last 24 hours, 39 have recovered or been 'discharged', according to the state health department. Since January this year, a total of 735 cases of Covid have been recorded, including 293 patients who recovered and six who died.
