French prop hits back at 'brave' Pollock following Cardiff scrap
Bordeaux-Begles prop Jefferson Poirot has broken his silence following his scrap with Northampton Saints' Henry Pollock after the Champions Cup final in Cardiff.

The France international was suspended for the incident after grabbing the throat of Pollock after the final whistle at the Principality Stadium.

In an interview withTV7 in France, Poirot insisted that he did not intend to get involved but felt the need to after seeing fly-half Matthieu Jalibert in the midst of the scuffle with the England back-row.
'I did sprint back onto the pitch to celebrate," he said. "At that moment, I saw Matthieu being held down by two players and that famous Henry Pollock, brave as he is, coming to push him.
"That's why I decided to intervene." Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby.

The prop, who has retired from France duty, admits he has "laughed" at the furore caused by the scuffle.
'I admit that all the fuss it caused… I didn't think it would cause all this. It made me laugh a lot, everything I saw or read, all those that were spread in the press,' he said.
Poirot also took another dig at Pollock, who has been called up by Andy Farrell for this summer's British & Irish Lions tour of Australia.

'It's not the image I had of a Lion," he said. "We'll see this summer.'
Pollock himself has already addressed the incident in an interview with TNT Sports, saying he was "pretty angry" with the prop.
URC talks with S4C ongoing as CEO hints at YouTube aim
BKT United Rugby Championship chief executive Martin Anayi says that talks with Welsh language broadcaster S4C are ongoing as he hinted that the league could pursue YouTube as a means to offer free-to-air coverage in the future.

BBC Wales will not show any URC matches from next season, with subscription channel Premier Sports having secured the exclusive rights.
However, there is still the chance that S4C will show some games as negotiations continue between the league and the channel.
"We're out there having those discussions," said Anayi. "We've put a really good package together on that basis.

"I think it's important that that's not the only option in the market. We're looking at different options to have free-to-air exposure for games across the league.
"We have that in Ireland, obviously, and we're looking to do the same in the UK. Those conversations are ongoing."
Whether a deal with S4C is signed off - with previous deals having been agreed late in the day - the league would appear to believe that free-to-air coverage might lie away from traditional linear terrestrial television.

"We're working with Premier Sports to see if there's a free-to-air angle - we might look around YouTube for example - that allows us to grow a younger audience without affecting the subscriber audience and will allow us to drive digitally a fanbase that is growing day-by-by to Premier Sports," added Anayi.
"That's important as we want them to grow, keep investing in rugby and the rugby channel. I think that's the angle we'd like to try explore in partnership with Premier Sports.
He added: "Those free-to-air broadcasters are going through some challenges, from a finance budget point of view. What we're seeing is the audience on digital and social are growing exponentially and traditional linear is declining, quite honestly.

"I think if we're looking at that mantra of bringing new fans into the sport, we need to be looking at the likes of YouTube as almost the free-to-air of the future.
"There's really good example where YouTube and traditional paid broadcasters have worked hand-in-hand to put more subscribers, when they're ready to pay for it, in the right position to subscribe. Prior to that, it's giving an access window in the digital sphere. It's a burgeoning area for us to focus in on."
Two Welshmen make URC dream team
Two Welshmen have been included in the United Rugby Championship's Elite XV, which is picked by the media.

Members of the press were given 10 players in each position to pick from, based on statistics from across the season. Ospreys back-row Jac Morgan and Scarlets back Blair Murray are the only Welsh players included, while the Scarlets also have South African hooker Marnus van der Merwe in the side.
League leaders Leinster provide just two players, with lock RG Snyman and full-back Jamie Osborne included.
Munster and the Bulls have the biggest share, boasting three players each. The Irish province provide second-row Tadhg Beirne, scrum-half Craig Casey and centre Tom Farrell, while the Bulls offer up the two props - Jan-Hendrik Wessels and Wilco Louw - as well as No. 8 Cameron Hanekom.

Glasgow's Rory Darge joins Morgan and Hanekom - who was also named Next-Gen player of the season - in the back-row, while Stormers fly-half Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who previously spent time at Llandovery College, is included along with Sharks centre Andre Esterhuizen and Edinburgh wing Darcy Graham in the backline.
Fatigue not an issue for Leinster
Leinster assistant coach Jacques Nienaber insists fatigue is not affecting the Irish province's bid to avoid a fourth successive season without silverware.
Despite topping the URC as runaway leaders, defeat to Northampton Saints in the Champions Cup semi-final put a massive dent in Leinster's season - having not won Europe's showpiece event since 2018.

Now, the URC acts as their only hope of lifting a trophy - with 2021 being the last time they won the league. However, a laboured win over the Scarlets on the weekend has raised more questions - although Nienaber has dismissed any concerns.
"No, not at all," said the 52-year-old South African World Cup winner.
"We're cracking on. It's a privilege for any team to be involved in the knock-out stages.

"It's a privilege for us definitely to be testing ourselves against Glasgow this weekend, the reigning champions, who obviously understand how to play knock-out games if you look at what they did last year. It's a privilege to test ourselves against a quality side like that."

Demir Tiknaz sees Celtic transfer 'contact' made with Rio Ave as Besiktas clock ticks on quick flip plan

The Turkish international is on loan from the Istanbul giants and reports in Portugal claim the Hoops are interested Reports in Portugal claim Celtic have "made contact" with Rio Ave over a deal for Demir Tiknaz. A Bola reports that French Ligue 1 outfit Lille are also interested in the Turkish midfielder and that the Premiership champions have joined his list of admirers. However, Rio Ave can only discuss a potential transfer once they've made his loan switch from Besiktas permanent. The option to do that for €5million expires next Tuesday, so the clock is ticking for the Liga Portugal side to try and turn an immediate profit. And it's claimed that they will only consider offers around the €10million (around £8.4m) mark. Tiknaz made 28 appearances for Rio Ave last season, scoring four times and providing two assists. He is currently on international duty with Turkey, who play friendlies against America and Mexico, the latter being played in the early hours of Wednesday morning - after Rio Ave's option expires. Celtic could of course approach Besiktas directly should that pass without the Portuguese club exercising their option, but their apparent willingness to cash in quick could make a deal easier if the signs there first. Five Derby horses who will love soft ground with ‘a hell of a lot of rain' set to hit Epsom ahead of £1.5m race

The going could change by the time of the big race WET WET WET Five Derby horses who will love soft ground with 'a hell of a lot of rain' set to hit Epsom ahead of £1.5m race Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) 'A HELL of a lot of rain' is set to hit Epsom this afternoon ahead of the blockbuster £1.5million Derby. The going was changed to good, good to soft in places, last night after the forecast deluge didn't hit. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Derby fav Delacroix should be able to handle the soft ground should the rain fall Credit: Getty But a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms and hail remains in place over the Surrey track. Oli Bell said on ITV Racing that up to 30mm of rain could fall between now and the Derby at 3.30pm. Templegate's Derby tip and 1-2-3-4 prediction With that in mind, here are five horses who should be able to cope if the going gets muddy. 1 Delacroix Heavily backed after Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore teamed up to win the Oaks on Friday, the fav should have no problem if the rain gets into the turf. He is 2-2 this year and finished a nose second on soft in last October's William Hill Futurity at Doncaster. 2 Midak The ground is typically much softer in the France - and that should play right into Midak's strengths. Supplemented for the race at a cost of £75,000, this three-year-old colt is showing signs of huge improvement. And the colossal fee paid to get him in the race - and run under the famous Aga Khan silks - could prove money well spent. 3 Tennessee Stud His odds have plummeted from 66-1 to 33s and it is easy to see why given the forecast. He brings strong form to the table having been beaten by the likes of Delacroix, Green Storm and Hotazhell. While he was a Group 1 winner on heavy at Saint-Cloud in France last October. 4 New Ground Getting into the really big prices at 50-1, this French raider was a winner on heavy last October. He has been campaigned at a higher level since and come up short - but maybe ultra soft ground is what he needs. His sire won a French Derby on heavy so there is certainly hope. 5 Green Storm If Tennessee Stud is a play, then 200-1 outsider Green Storm has to be as well. Owned by Ahmad Al Shaikh, a genius owner who seemingly always gets a big-price fancy in the frame at the Derby - Hoo Ya Mal at 150-1 was the standout - he screams stamina. Al Shaikh is obsessed with winning the Derby and while this would be the mother of all shocks, a small punt each-way could prove the prudent play. Wales will go on the attack in Belgium, says Craig Bellamy

His side coasted to a 3-0 win over Liechtenstein, the world's 205th ranked team, as second-half goals from Harry Wilson and Kieffer Moore added to Joe Rodon's 39th-minute opener. It was defender Rodon's first international goal and Wales had complete domination of a one-sided contest with 27 goal attempts to zero. Wales face a far tougher challenge in Brussels, although they did have the bonus of Belgium being held 1-1 in North Macedonia on Friday night, thanks to a late home equaliser. Bellamy said: 'We go there and I'm not camping. I'm not sitting back. It's not in my make-up. I can't do it, I don't want to do it. 'I've got a little bit more in my head, but I'm really excited about it. I'll try and absorb this one but then, yeah, get ready for that.' Victory took Wales to the top of their World Cup qualifying section with seven points from three games – but Bellamy could not resist a dig at the Welsh ball boys on the perimeter of the pitch. 'There is a lot I liked,' said Bellamy. 'I'd really like us to make this six, seven, eight. That's what we need to push. 'These games have never been easy four our nation. We have a proven record of that. 'The mentality of the players was really good. Did we expect to win? Of course we did. Did we expect such a slow game? 'I felt our ball boys could have been a bit quicker. We are at home so we have a choice in that as well. 'I'm going to be looking for them in a bit – I'm not. I'm joking!' Victory came at a price as Neco Williams, one of Wales' best performers since Bellamy took charge last summer, was forced off midway through the first half with a nasty-looking injury. The Nottingham Forest full-back, in trying to cross on the byline midway through the first half, landed awkwardly and was in obvious pain before leaving the field on a stretcher. Williams appears a serious doubt for Monday's clash with Belgium. 'Give us a few hours,' said Bellamy. 'We just don't know. We'll find out tomorrow morning (Saturday). 'The medical staff will be racing with it, we'll make sure he's looked after. 'We'll find more and relay that message as soon as we know.'
