Paradise found for Polynesian cruise passengers after detour to Marquesas Islands in storm

In 2018, I travelled solo to the French Polynesian islands. By day I surfed, snorkelled, sailed and swam, stopping only to sleep in an over-the-water bungalow on stilts.

On my final night, I lay on my belly, face peering through the glass-bottomed hut as neon fish darted between pylons and coral gardens.
That is when I vowed to return some day to this living postcard with my husband.
Recently, that day came to fruition by means of transport we vowed to never experience: a cruise ship.
Obviously not all cruises are created equal, but the thought of being 'landlocked' with hundreds of strangers in a floating hotel just wasn't our style. For us, cruise ships checked all the wrong boxes. But then there was Windstar, a cruise line of six yachts that accommodate no more than 342 guests.

For roughly US$8,000 per person a 12-day Tahitian cruise included round-trip by air to Papeete, pre- and-post cruise accommodation at Hilton and Intercontinental Tahiti Resort, ground transfers, and of course the sailing experience.

From tourism to spending, Labour Day data sends mixed message on China's economic activity

China saw a continued rebound in tourism over the Labour Day holiday, with visitor levels returning to pre-pandemic levels, while spending per head showed signs of stagnation as travellers increasingly opted for less-traditional destinations. Advertisement Improved tourism numbers, combined with recovering retail sales, a nationwide trade-in programme for consumer goods, and a lingering housing crisis, are sending mixed signals for the state of the world's second-largest economy, which is relying more than ever on the domestic market amid a trade war with the United States. During the five-day holiday, from Thursday to Monday, China recorded 314 million domestic trips nationwide, up 6.4 per cent, year on year, and surpassed the 195 million trips made during the same period in 2019, before the pandemic, according to data from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Total spending increased by 8 per cent, year on year, to nearly 180.3 billion yuan (US$25 billion), with per capita spending at around 574 yuan (US$80), slightly higher than last year's 565.7 yuan. But the per-head tourism revenue over the holiday remained 10 per cent less than the pre-pandemic level, Goldman Sachs said in a note on Tuesday. Advertisement It also said that the price sub-indices of April services PMIs remained low, pointing to persistent deflationary pressure and continued consumption downgrading.

Are cheap 68 yuan tours for mainland visitors to Hong Kong good for the economy?

Low-budget tours to Hong Kong costing as little as 68 yuan (US$9.35) have been a popular option among mainland visitors over the Labour Day 'golden week' holiday, sparking concerns about how such minimal spending by tourists in the city would benefit the local economy. Advertisement A search by the Post on China's leading online travel booking platform Fliggy found that a one-day tour to Hong Kong for a group of 60 on May 6 further dropped to between 35.9 yuan and 39.9 yuan per person, including lunch. Fliggy is owned by Alibaba Group Holding , which also owns the South China Morning Post. The budget tours, which require participants to apply for their own travel visas, mainly target those visiting Hong Kong from Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Guangzhou. They cover eight major attractions in a single day. Tourists are asked to assemble at designated places at 8am, before they are taken to the Wong Tai Sin temple, the West Kowloon Cultural District's Art Park and the area outside the Hong Kong Palace Museum in the morning.
