Nintendo Switch 2 release in San Francisco draws crowd to Union Square store
The Nintendo Switch 2 release at the San Francisco flagship store had fans lining up and traveling from far away on Wednesday.
The flagship San Francisco store hosted a pre-celebration event for fans. One fan said they even traveled from New Jersey for the opportunity.
"I'm a big Nintendo fan," a fan dressed as Luigi said.
Fans got there early and were able to try the Mario Kart demo on the Switch 2, which officially goes on sale at 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 4.
KPIX asked Denier about the hype surrounding the latest console.
"It's a powerful 10x upgrade from the original that came out in 2017. I'm looking forward to playing 4K, 60 frames per second," Denier said. "That's a little bit nerdy, but that's something people like me really look for."
Coincidentally, he means players like Trevor Strohl, who's a professional saxophone player. And when he gets on the sax, his interests collide.
"We play all sorts of video game music, including a lot of Nintendo music," Strohl said.
The Switch 2 is pricier than the first generation, at roughly $500 per unit. But from the looks of the line, it's well on its way to making another big splash for Nintendo and its users.
"I'm going to buy it with Mario Kart, and I'm going to buy it with some controllers and accessories and stuff, maybe some of the accessories they got," Denier said.
In the end, fans are there to have a common experience and share the love for a beloved gaming system.
"We're just devoted fans," Denier said. "We love Nintendo."

'All humans want to be seen and that was her struggle. Because she was going through so much, she felt very much alone and it was beautiful to know. It's unfortunate that she had to go through so much and to be pushed to her breaking point for her to finally be seen and it was by two other incredible Black women. 'I think that gave her a reason to live because after a while it's like, 'why am I even here?' That's why its important humans are seen ... For someone to say, 'I see you, I understand', can save a life,' Taraji says. The many layers of Black women Written, directed and produced by Tyler Perry, the famed filmmaker is no stranger to highlighting the plight of Black women and the struggles they face in their daily lives. Tyler is known for hit films like Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Mea Culpa, Why Did I Get Married? and more. With many of the themes in his films exploring the good, the bad and ugly that Black women have to face on a daily, many people critique the consistently heavy and traumatising experiences Black women are subjected to in his films. This is what Tyler had to say about those critiques. 'I say nothing to those people who think that my films focus on the struggle of Black women because they're right, it does. Let me tell you something, if I get an opportunity to put a Black woman onscreen for people to see them in love, happy, in joy, in pain, in struggle - what I'm doing is a service to all people, so that people will know that Black women are not just strong and one thing. They're all things and they go through all of these different things. 'So, to have an opportunity to be able to paint all of these pictures and all sides of us is something that I'm paying homage to my mother, to my aunt, to my sisters and friends and cousins and the things they all went through, so that's what I'll say to that. When it comes to Straw, Tyler says, '[Janiyah] says in the film, 'Nobody sees me', well, this is about people seeing this group of people who everybody has ignored for so long.' I had to commit to what was on the page, commit to the choices I made and believe it. And then I had the guidance of this great mind here, Tyler Perry, who makes me feel uninhibited. Henson The littlest support can save a life Taraji's character is supported by phenomenal performances by actors Sherri Shepherd and Teyana Taylor, who play the bank manager Nicole who has been taken hostage by Janiyah and Detective Raymond, the officer negotiating with her, respectively. Sherri tells us more about what resonated with her about her character. 'The fact that my character, Nicole, actually saw Janiyah and she left where she was working at before in an affluent area to come down to the neighbourhood because she wanted to make a difference and here was a woman walking in who just had the weight of the world on her shoulders. So, it was just like, in that moment of connection, sisterhood. I love anything about sisterhood, so it was a sisterhood connection for me.' Teyana's character, Detective Raymond, becomes a lifeline for Janiyah. Teyana explains, 'We've seen these type of women, we've been these type of women, we are these type of women. So, it's easy to put your sauce on it when it's just like, wow, to be a mother and to know that you would do anything for your baby, how can you not dive into that as a mother? How can you not dive into these characters as a Black woman? In spaces we don't feel seen and things like that. 'So, this role I wouldn't even say was challenging, it was more of an exhale. It was really a safe space to be able to really take my cape off and feel and be okay with not being okay and putting that all into this character.'

Change these Switch 2 settings first
Everyone who is just coming home with a brand new Nintendo Switch 2 will be racing to get the system open, transfer their Switch data, and jump into Mario Kart World or any other new title to start playing. We felt the same way, but there are a few bits of housekeeping to be done with every new console. It may not be the most glamorous thing, but diving into the Switch 2's settings now can make the rest of your time with the console far more enjoyable than if you put it off. There are a lot of settings to sift through, and most of them aren't ones you will need to ever touch, but we found the most essential Switch 2 settings you should change on day one. Limit your battery charging Just like the original, the Switch 2 pulls double-duty as a home and handheld console, meaning it has an internal battery to consider. By now, most of us have heard the advice to never charge our devices up to 100% to help preserve the battery, and that advice is sound. What was tricky about this on the original Switch was that you had to pay attention and unplug your console at the right time, which was very inconvenient. The Switch 2 has a handy feature that automatically stops charging at 90% even if you leave it plugged in overnight. While you will lose out on a little bit of playtime on each charge, you will get much more out of it in the long run by keeping your battery healthy. Recommended Videos To turn this feature on, go to System Settings -> System -> Stop Charging Around 90%. Remap your buttons Whether you're using the new Joy-cons or improved Pro Controller, not all default button layouts are exactly comfortable for everyone. Each console has some form of button remapping system, including the original Switch, but they're always buried so deep in menus that it is a pain to change them between games. The Switch 2 has two ways you can remap your controls, with the first being found in Settings -> Accessibility -> Button Mapping. This way works fine, but there's an even better way. In that same menu, turn on Button Mapping in Quick Settings. Now you will have the option to access full button mapping via the Quick Settings, which you can pull up at any time by holding down the Home button. Combining this feature with the ability to save presets and you can swap between all kinds of button layouts based on what game you're playing at the time. Text-to-speech and speech-to-text The Switch 2 has a lot of great accessibility features, including text options, zooming in the screen, and mapping your buttons like we talked about above. But one that a lot of people should take advantage of is the various text-to-speech options. These all live in the System Settings -> Accessibility menu. The first is a basic Use Text to Speech toggle that reads out text in the Switch 2 UI to make navigation easier. What we were very impressed with, and find very useful ourselves, are the GameChat Voice Text-to-Speech Audio and GameChat Voice Speech-to-Text options. These do exactly as they describe; the former turns text you enter into audio in GameChat, while the latter turns what others are saying into text for you to read. Set up parental controls If you've got a youngster playing the Switch 2, setting up the parental controls can help keep them safe while gaming. To view all the parental controls, go to System Settings -> Parental Controls Settings. Here, you will have various options on how restrictive you want the system to be, as well as let you use the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app to be able to change settings from your phone. Some key settings to consider are restricting software based on age rating or content rating, the ability to post screenshots or videos to social media, and turning off free communication. That last one might be the most important now that GameChat with built-in microphones and optional cameras are in play. Turn on dark mode Some would argue that dark mode isn't an essential setting to change, but it is a godsend for us. If you find the natural white of the Switch 2 to be a bit harsh on the eyes, especially when doing some late-night gaming, swapping over to dark mode can make using the system far more comfortable. You can swap by heading into System Settings -> Themes and changing from white to black.
