Mark Cuban, Nico Harrison are understandably thrilled with Mavericks' good fortune to win NBA Draft Lottery
Much has been made about what role former Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban played — or didn't play, to be precise — in the franchise's decision to trade Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers.
But one thing is for sure. He's stoked about Monday night's NBA Draft Lottery results. As is general manager Nico Harrison and virtually every other prominent Mavericks power player. Understandably.
The Mavericks overcame the fourth-longest odds of 14 lottery participants and a 1.8% chance to secure the No. 1 pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. And this isn't just any NBA Draft. This one features Duke phenom Cooper Flagg, who looks every bit like the generational player he's been hyped to be since his prep days.
The long-shot win caps a tumultuous season in which the Mavericks' fan base turned on its beloved franchise after Harrison orchestrated the Dončić deal that's been widely lambasted as one of the worst in the history of sports.
Many wondered at the time how much sway Cuban — a noted Dončić fan — had in making the decision. Cuban has since made it clear, to the surprise of few, that he was not consulted before the deal went down.
Regardless of his feelings over the deal, Cuban was thrilled with Monday's results. His NSFW social media reaction tells the story.
Unreal OMFG Let's Go Mavs

Oh my fucking God !!!

How about Harrison? Well, yeah. He was stoked too. As was everyone else at Mavericks home base.

In case it's not clear, that's Harrison in the light blue jacket.
Mavericks CEO Rick Welts, who joined the franchise in January just weeks before the Dončić deal went down, was on site for Monday's lottery reveal. He was not letting go of the No. 1 card that signified the Mavericks' win.
"It just feels like a reversal of fortune, like of epic proportions to us" 🙌@dallasmavs CEO Rick Welts spoke with @TheAndyKatz after Dallas' FIRST EVER #NBADraftLottery win! pic.twitter.com/kIse50a75N
— NBA TV (@NBATV) May 13, 2025
"It just feels like a reversal of fortune, like of epic proportions to us," Welts told NBATV's Andy Katz. "I'm so happy for the fans in Dallas. ...
"I know how fans feel about this team and what a tumultuous season it's been for them. I can't think of anything that could cure that more than this can."
So is all forgiven by Mavericks fans over the Dončić trade because Dallas got lucky Monday night? Of course not.
But do Mavericks fans feel better and possess a tinge of the hope that was abandoned when Dončić got shipped to the Lakers? Probably? At least the ones who didn't completely disavow the franchise after the deal.
How about majority Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont, whose group purchased Cuban's previous majority share of the franchise? Well. Apparently, he wasn't watching Monday night.
I'm told Patrick Dumont was at a track meet of one of his kids and couldn't watch the lottery live. His phone rang and it was Mark Cuban, telling him the Mavs were in the top 4.Phone rang again and Dumont thought Cuban said Mavs got No. 1 pick, but Cuban was so busy screaming…
— Brad Townsend (@townbrad) May 13, 2025
Per the Dallas Morning News, Cuban called him to deliver the good news.
It'll be interesting to see what the Mavs do with their good fortune.

Nobody on the Boston Celtics roster is untouchable
Nobody on the Boston Celtics roster is untouchable Nobody on the Boston Celtics roster is untouchable if the offer is right. Or at least that is the prevailing wisdom among some fans and analysts of the storied ball club as they gear up to make moves this offseason to reduce their historic cap hit and tax bill by moving some players into the cap structure of other NBA teams. The more likely candidates include the likes of veteran guard Jrue Holiday, Latvian big man Kristaps Porzingis, and reserve forward Sam Hauser due to their large deals for the latter two and movable salary for Hauser. But there have been rumbles of interest for point guard Derrick White, and speculation that even Jaylen Brown might be fair game. Could star forward Jayson Tatum be attainable if the right offer came along? The hosts of the CLNS Media "How Bout Them Celtics!" podcast, Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance, took some time on a recent episode of their show to talk it over. Check it out below! Tyrese Haliburton Reveals His Theory On Why Fans Criticize His Game
Tyrese Haliburton Reveals His Theory On Why Fans Criticize His Game originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton is used to being counted out. He's been the underdog for the entirety of his career, and the doubters are out in full force during the 2025 NBA Finals. In a chat with the media before Game 2, Haliburton explained why so many people have trouble accepting his game and continue to question his place as one of the top players in the game. Advertisement "It's unorthodox," said Haliburton, via Brett Siegel. "My jumper, the way it looks, it [has] always been criticized coming into the NBA. I think that was honestly a big part of it. I think sometimes I affect the game that isn't necessarily the gaudy, box score numbers. The way the game is digested by the fans sometimes. I think it's a lot of boxscore watchers. So when my box score doesn't look the way it's supposed to, that's a part of it as well. I don't know the answer, but I know it's probably not going to stop anytime soon." Every NBA star meets some resistance from the NBA community, but it seems like Haliburton is critiqued and overlooked more than most. Despite his success with the Pacers and as a point guard in general, Hali gets a lot of heat from the critics, who cite him as inconsistent and overrated. Tyrese believes it has to do with his unusual game, which includes an awkward jumper and unseen ways of impacting the court. While he's not a shooter like Stephen Curry or a flashy dunker like Ja Morant, he's become something else entirely, and not everyone is so quick to embrace it. For the Pacers, his impact is more than enough, and it's taken them to places they haven't seen in decades. As a juggernaut in the East, the Pacers know Haliburton's true worth, even if the haters continue to downplay his greatness. Advertisement At this point, the only way for Haliburton to silence the critics is by stepping up when the Pacers need him most. With averages of 18.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 9.2 assists per game on 47.3% shooting, he was a beast in the regular season, and he's been even better in the playoffs. In 17 games in the playoffs so far, Haliburton has led the Pacers to a 13-4 record with averages of 18.5 points, 9.5 assists, and 5.9 rebounds on 46.6% shooting. With multiple comeback victories, the Pacers cruised through the East, and now they are just three wins away from becoming NBA champions. If Haliburton continues this trajectory, nobody will be able to deny his status as one of the best players in the game and a defining point guard of the modern NBA. At just 25 years old, his career is approaching Hall of Fame territory, and there's still so much time for him to add to his resume. Fueled by the words of the doubters and naysayers, Haliburton plans to dominate the league for years to come, and he will go to any lengths to help ensure a championship for his team. No matter how unorthodox his game may be. Haliburton deserves respect and recognition as the NBA superstar that he is. Pacers GM Reveals The True Reason Why He Traded For Tyrese Haliburton
Pacers GM Reveals The True Reason Why He Traded For Tyrese Haliburton originally appeared on Fadeaway World. The Indiana Pacers are just three wins away from their first-ever NBA championship, and Tyrese Haliburton is a big reason why. Haliburton has had a magical postseason, and Pacers GM Chad Buchanan spoke to The Athletic about their decision to acquire him from the Sacramento Kings in 2022. Advertisement 'Our team was kind of at a crossroads,' Buchanan said. 'We didn't really have a guy, like a young player, that you could really build around. Now, Domas (Sabonis) was a terrific player and a very productive player. But we felt like in today's modern NBA, it's hard to build around a center unless you've got, like, a (Denver Nuggets star Nikola) Jokic— an MVP-caliber center. "So we tried to target some young guards, playmaking guards around the league that we thought maybe fit the bill," Buchanan stated. "They're very hard to acquire, obviously. We felt like Tyrese, with the way Rick wanted to play, and how we want to build a team in the modern NBA — playing faster, playing a little more random. "Tyrese was one of the ideal targets to try to build that type of system around," Buchanan continued. "That's what coach Carlisle values, and has developed his philosophy (around) over the years, and where we're at today. It was just a great fit from that standpoint.' The Pacers traded Domantas Sabonis, Justin Holiday, Jeremy Lamb, and a 2023 second-round pick for Haliburton, Buddy Hield, and Tristan Thompson on Feb. 8, 2022. For the longest time, this was seen as a win-win trade as the big names shone for their new teams. Advertisement Sabonis would make the All-Star team in 2023 with the Kings and helped end a 16-year playoff drought that season. He also made the All-NBA Third Team in 2023 and 2024. For all the good work Sabonis has done, though, the Kings have now become the losers in this trade. They haven't made the playoffs since 2023 and are nowhere close to being good enough to compete for a title. It would be unfair to blame Sabonis for that, but Haliburton has shown the difference a special guard can make. As Buchanan pointed out, the Pacers weren't really going anywhere when Haliburton arrived. They had a woeful 19-37 record when he made his debut during the 2021-22 season, and you wondered when this franchise would turn things around. Success wouldn't come immediately for the Pacers with Haliburton either. They finished that 2021-22 campaign with a 25-57 record and then went 35-47 in the 2022-23 season. Haliburton did make the All-Star team for the first time in 2023, and he was ready to lead a revival the following year. Advertisement The Pacers went 47-35 in 2023-24 to finish as the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference. They surprisingly made it all the way to the Conference Finals, but the run was viewed as a bit of a fluke. They had beaten the Milwaukee Bucks and the New York Knicks along the way, and both teams were dealing with injuries. The Pacers have now shown that their 2024 run was no fluke by going one better in 2025. They are up 1-0 against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Finals after yet another incredible comeback that was capped off by another Haliburton game-winner. Haliburton has now established himself as one of the best clutch performers in recent NBA history. The 25-year-old has hit four go-ahead or game-tying shots in the final five seconds of regulation or overtime in this postseason. Haliburton, who is averaging 18.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 9.5 assists, 1.3 steals, and 0.7 blocks per game in these playoffs, would now have his eyes set on putting the Pacers in the driver's seat in this series. Game 2 is at Paycom Center on Sunday at 8 PM ET, and another win would put them in a commanding position.
