Former Brownsburg star, Purdue recruit Kanon Catchings to enter transfer portal
Former Brownsburg standout Kanon Catchings will enter the transfer portal, per multiple reports late Saturday night.
Catchings averaged 7.2 points a game as a freshman at BYU this past season.
A former Purdue recruit who left Brownsburg for Overtime Elite prior to his senior high school season and top-40 recruit in the 2024 class, Catchings signed with Purdue before asking for a release from his letter of intent in the summer.

Doyel: Kanon Catchings leaving Purdue was best for him — and for Boilers
"If something happened, it would be one thing — but nothing happened," Matt Painter said in June when Catchings departed. "It's just one of those deals where he was concerned about his role and just wanted out of his letter — and then kind of went back the next day and said everything was good.
"It just was like, this is probably better than we can kind of part ways if you're questioning things before things start."

Catchings committed to Purdue as a sophomore at Brownsburg and spent his senior season with Overtime Elite in Georgia. At the time of his Purdue exit, Catchings' mother, Tauja, told IndyStar her son was "looking for a program that can support his timeline" relative to the NBA. BYU coach Kevin Young most recently served as associate head coach of the Phoenix Suns. Tim Fanning, Catchings' coach with Overtime Elite, also is now a BYU assistant.

'Kanon's goal when he committed to Purdue was just to play college basketball,' Tauja Catchings told IndyStar's Kyle Neddenriep. 'His goal now is to play in the NBA. Purdue has been more of a traditional program, which I like. ... But I think Kanon was probably looking for a program that can support his timeline.'
This season, the 6-9 forward saw his playing time diminish significantly in February and March. He averaged 25 minutes a game through BYU's first 14 games but then averaged 12.3 minutes per in the next 15 games. He played a total of nine minutes in the Cougars' two NCAA tournament games this month.
BYU is bringing in the nation's No. 1 recruit, 6-9 AJ Dybantsa, next season.
"I think every freshman that comes in has those uncertain thoughts," Painter said over the summer. "But you know, you compete and earn your way into a role. I can't anoint a role to somebody out of thin air. You walk in, you compete.

"Zach Edey didn't have a role. Fletcher Loyer didn't have a role. They came in here and they earned what they got. And that's the way it is."

All Blacks great Stu Wilson, known for his ebullient personality and pioneering play, dies at 70
Associated Press WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Stu Wilson, an elusive All Blacks winger whose playing style reflected his ebullient personality, has died. He was 70. Wilson's death was confirmed by New Zealand Rugby, which did not specify a cause. He died in his sleep Sunday at his home in Tauranga on New Zealand's North Island. Wilson was a natural joker whose play was many years ahead of its time. He foreshadowed the larger, stronger wingers who are now commonplace but he also had pace, balance and an ability to break tackles. Wilson scored 19 tries in 35 tests for the All Blacks which, at the time of his retirement, was the all-time record for New Zealand. That included a hat-trick of tries against the British and Irish Lions at Dunedin in 1983. He captained the All Blacks on their 1983 tour to Britain and formed a brilliant attacking partnership at provincial and international level with his fellow winger and friend Bernie Fraser. After retiring Wilson became an amusing and popular commentator for television. David Campese, an ex-Australia winger who made his test debut opposite Wilson in 1982, told Television New Zealand 'as a player, Stu made rugby look easy and earned huge respect as captain in 1983.' 'He had a swerve to beat anyone, extreme pace, intellect and power, able to break through tacklers, making him a try-scoring machine.' ___ AP rugby: in this topic

Aaron Rodgers was Steelers' ‘third option' at quarterback before pairing came together
The Steelers may have waited around for Aaron Rodgers to finally sign a contract, but that doesn't mean he was their No. 1 choice. In fact, the ex-Jet quarterback was apparently Pittsburgh's third choice for the position, ESPN's Adam Schefter recently reported. The Steelers announced that Rodgers inked a one-year contract with the team after a lengthy waiting game, but the decision to bring in the four-time NFL MVP was out of necessity rather than choice. Advertisement 'This was the third option for the Pittsburgh Steelers,' Schefter said during Friday's 'NFL Live' while discussing the signing. 'They were in on Matthew Stafford and couldn't get done a trade. They tried to re-sign Justin Fields, he opted to go to the New York Jets, where he will meet Rodgers on opening day. And after they couldn't get a trade done for Stafford and couldn't get Fields re-signed, they pivoted to Rodgers.' Aaron Rodgers reacts during the Jets' game against the Colts in November 2024. Robert Sabo for the NY Post The quarterback is coming off a season in which he threw 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, but it wasn't enough to help the Jets reach the lofty goals that were placed upon the team at the beginning of the year — and they finished 5-12. Advertisement The Jets opted to move on from Rodgers earlier this year during a meeting at the team's facility, which the future Hall of Famer later went on to criticize in an appearance on 'The Pat McAfee Show.' Rodgers was spotted at the Steelers' facility over the weekend, entering the building a little after 8 a.m. on Saturday. Advertisement Aaron Rodgers arrived at the Steelers' facility June 7. WTAE Rodgers' contract is worth $13.65 million and includes $10 million of guaranteed money, as well as incentives that could increase its worth up to $19.5 million. The 41-year-old will wear No. 8 during his stint with the Steelers, which will begin when Pittsburgh vists the Jets in Week 1.

Big 12 Official Makes Final Decision on Controversial Penalty From BYU-Utah
Big 12 Official Makes Final Decision on Controversial Penalty From BYU-Utah originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Utah athletic director Mark Harlan showed his passionate side during last year's Holy War matchup. After storming the field and declaring his displeasure with the Big 12 in the postgame press conference, he was given a definitive answer on a controversial fourth down penalty. Advertisement Big 12 officials coordinator Greg Burks said the holding call that extended BYU's game-winning drive against Utah was the correct call, according to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. BYU was down by two points and faced a 4th and 10 at their own 9 with 1:30 to go. Quarterback Jake Retzlaff was sacked on the play, but it was negated due to a holding penalty with receiver JoJo Phillips on the ground. The Big 12 officials called a holding penalty on Utah's Zemaiah Vaughn for pulling Phillips down. The call extended the drive, allowing Will Ferrin to boot a 44-yard field goal as time expired. Harlan said the contest was 'stolen' from Utah. He was later fined $40K by the Big 12. The Avalanche-Journal obtained a copy of the Big 12's response to the University of Utah through an open records request and published it on Friday. In total, Utah questioned six calls from the game. The one most scrutinized was the holding call.
