A busy weekend across southern Saskatchewan saw Swift Current held its 19th annual Windscape Kite Festival.
'Kiters' as they are called, travelled from across North America to take their flying machines to the skies over the Swift Current.
One group, called 'Quad Squad Northwest' came from the United States. The group flies sport kites with four control lines.
Hundreds of residents showed up to watch the two-day long event. There were also activities for the kids – including the chance to build and fly your own kite.
The sport kites put on quite the show – resembling an aerial ballet.
'Its actually pretty close to a square dance. So, one of the professional flyers out there will have mic and he'll be calling telling the other kiters where to go. So, 'Everyone go left, everyone go up, everybody go right,'' event coordinator Keely Williams told CTV News.
'They can do some pretty neat things where they can cross their lines over or twist their lines together and then untwist them.'
The festival relies on more than 200 volunteers. Organizers say that planning for next year's event will begin next week.

Irving agrees to $119M, 3-year deal with Mavs that aligns with Davis contract

Article content DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks and Kyrie Irving have agreed on a $119-million, three-year contract with the all-star guard still recovering from a torn ACL that will sideline him into the 2025-26 season, a person with knowledge of the deal said Tuesday night. Article content Irving is declining the $43-million player option in the final year of his current three-year contract, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal isn't expected to be finalized until the start of the new league year on July 6. Article content Article content Article content The new contract will align Irving with co-star Anthony Davis, who joined the Mavericks in the seismic trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February. Davis has three years remaining on his contract, with a player option that now will be the same season as Irving — 2027-28. Article content The agreement with Irving came on the eve of the NBA draft, with the Mavericks poised to take former Duke star Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick after winning the draft lottery despite having just a 1.8% chance to do so. Article content Irving also is a Duke alum, as is young centre Dereck Lively II. Once the nine-time all-star returns from his injury, perhaps in December or January, all three among Irving, Lively and Flagg figure to be in the starting lineup. Article content The 33-year-old Irving came to the Mavericks in a 2023 trade after a tumultuous tenure in Brooklyn. The idea then was to pair him with Doncic, and a year later the duo led Dallas to the NBA Finals for the first time in 13 years. Boston beat the Mavs in five games last June. Article content The stunning decision to send Doncic to the Lakers elevated Irving's status, although Davis' championship pedigree with the Lakers essentially put the two on even footing. Article content Davis went down with a groin injury in his Dallas debut, and before he could come back, Irving sustained his knee injury about a month after the Doncic trade. Article content

Rider's Mario Alford proving he never ‘lost it' after stunning performance against Argonauts

WATCH: The Saskatchewan Roughriders remain undefeated. Efforts by kick returner Mario Alford helped the team beat out the Argonauts. Jacob Carr reports. Riders' do-it-all specialist Mario Alford doesn't have the time of day for any doubters or naysayers. There were plenty coming into the 2025 season, saying the 33-year-old had lost a step, and his job as a punt and kick returner for the team was up for grabs. Alford has shined this season, particularly in the kickoff return game, where he is averaging over 30 yards per return through three games. His latest spectacular play, a 99-yard kickoff return touchdown to seal a win for Saskatchewan, helped the Riders improve to 3-0 on the season. 'Once I got through the hole and I set up my blockers and I saw green, I said 'I'm gone' and I just knew it then,' Alford said. Last season was a down year by Alford's standards, averaging a hair under 24 yards per kickoff return and just 10 yards per punt return. But the CFL veteran, who's now in his seventh year, has never lost faith in his abilities. 'I don't pay [critics] no attention, I don't hear the noise, the media, I don't even read that stuff. I didn't even know that was being said, I had people come and tell me about it, but again I know what type of player I am. I know what I can do, been doing it for a long time.' It has been a long time, as mentioned, seven years now in the CFL ranks. Alford was popping long return touchdowns going back to his college days as a West Virginia Mountaineer. In 2014, in the first game of the season, Alford recorded a 100-yard kickoff return touchdown against the Alabama Crimson Tide. Fast forward to 2025 and the Riders are glad to have Alford rushing the length of the field for their team. 'I think our kickoff team has been outstanding this entire year and it was only a matter of time [before they broke one]. So, I'm just so happy for those guys because they work their tails off,' Alford added. One guy working his tail off or at least trying to find a dirty shirt to block during Alford's touchdown return was Riders' defensive lineman Lake Korte-Moore. Alford joked about Korte-Moore nearly putting the kibosh on his game-clinching run. 'Yeah, he was kind of standing because he didn't have no one to block. So, he was just in the way, so I pushed him out the way and I just went up the sideline,' he laughed. Alford's next chance to electrify Rider Nation will come at home on Saturday when they host the B.C. Lions.
